I would argue that the receivers on the other team will be known as fire and brimstone, because the safeties are gonna get BURNED. No Defensive Ends and two safeties that can't cover. Qb's dream. Congratulations current Washington FO on once again showing why you are the worst front office in the history of the NFL.

I like this pick. If you listen to Gibbs in the presser, he has stated over and over again that Landry was selected as the best possible player on the board. We'll fix our needs in.

This is basically like drafting archuleta. This is seriously horrible. I don't even want to watch next year. They did nothing to improve anything by drafting him. What good does a physical safety do you if you can't get to the qb and he has all day to throw. They are completely ignorant to anything that is wrong with them, their team, or their philosophies.

Someone might want to figure out WHAT the TEAM's philosophies and directions are before making a jugdement on this pick.

The guy that runs the team has spoke highly of the TWO DL drafted last year and how they have impressed this off-season. This may not justify drafting a safety but it explains not drafting D Line or bringing anyone in during free agency. If anyone knows why this Defense didn't click last year I'd think it would be the guys that run it.

This is a great pick. This isn't the deepest of drafts and we definately got the best defender in the draft. Hands down. He's a blitzing machine and will knock your head off. This will be the most lethal safety duo for years to come. HAIL!

We really need to hope and pray that our two DT's shine this year.

Hopefully Griffin can get healthy and give us at least one more good year so that we can draft someone next year.

I say we draft Walter Thomas.

I am so with you on this manchild. Might be the best pickup of the draft if we can get him.

Not going to lament about how I think LL @ 6 is a mistake anymore...if we get WT I will be happy. Kinda like a McCune pick only I think Thomas could turn out better.

Gibbs is dumb? You know something they don't? Do you know their plan for the rest of the draft, free agency and/or possible trades? Do you know their defensive plan for next year?

I've been one of the biggest pass rush cheerleaders on this board....

I basically feel like this.

HOPEFULLY we did our homework and did it well. The linemen on the board may not be as good as we DREAM them to be. Linemen are hard to guage while safeties such as Taylor and Ed Reed usually transition over.

HOPEFULLY like I said earlier we will get improved play out of our current guys. Lets break it down before I go to the driving range.

Golston - Will improve with a full offseason of rest (rookies get a short time). Will imrprove with a year under his belt.

Griffin - A good guy but getting old. He should be able to keep things solid if he can stay healthy.

Montgomery - has been impressing the coaches and hopefully will be our "Golston" of the 2007 season.

Salavea - Hopefully he'll play like he did in 2005 with being further in the depth chart. We wont need to wear him down as much and hopefully he'll be healthier.

X-factor - Whoever we decide to pick in the draft at this position could possibly be another shocking surprise as Golston was.

That being said, hopefully we get Walter Thomas. We have no picks, linemen are 50/50 anyway, why not get the biggest most athletic one? If he's there I say pull the trigger.

I can agree with the Landry pick because it was safe. The linemen pick wasn't safe. Taylor and Reed prove that their skills transition easy into the NFL. Even if Landry gets burnt this year, whenever we get the pass rush together his skills will show.



THE MAIN THING WE NEED realize is that everyting can't be addressed in one year. We have no picks because we're in a period of transition from our stupud F/A splurging ways. THe 08 draft will be much easier to deal with. We need to get the best of the best this year and mate that with great coaching.

I think we'll be better than 8-8 this year and we'll be in positin to make a run next year pososibly.

Good job, Chris. I like the optimism and well said.

I agree that we need help at d-line, but like Chris said, Landry was the safest pick and they probably didn't get an offer they liked. They did what they had to do. Let's embrace it, like Chris has, and move on. There are brighter days ahead and there's still a chance to grab a DE or a DT.

Our primarily need is at DE, the second need at DT, and the third and fourth at CB and weakside LB. Given the fact that Gibbs won't start Landry next year, I'm a bit horrified at the pick. Maybe the Skins have some FA signings in mind or a deal or two that will make immediate sense. I hope so. Otherwise, the D will continue to be a huge liability and we still have only ey and Moss as top receivers, as well as weakened OL. Another liability is waiting to happen-- Brunell's going to see the field as the only viable backup.
Also, Smoot and Springs are question marks. I can't help but feeling disaster coming, at least for next year.

Really this pick is a good one. I have seen LL many times play against TN Vols and he is basically just like ST. I have been hearing on ESPN radio that the skins are in trade talks with an " unknown " team to get some more picks.

This pick will probably cost us at least two games, considering we could have had an edge rusher to replace daniels, who no longer has ankles or legs, or an okoye to replace griffin when he gets injured the first game.

What then is the point of keeping Fox and Prioleau and signing stoutmire, there are like 8 safeties on the team.

This makes perfect sense. While the most vital need for the defense is clearly D-line you have to consider these factors

Gaines Adams was gone

Okoye will be great someday, 19 year olds can't dominate now

A starting caliber safety to team with Taylor was the only position on our team with a TRUE VOID. Don't give me this BS that Preilou (he's not good enough for me to remember how to spell his name) is simply going hop in and roll like a real starter should. Vernon Fox was good on a defense that leaked everything to it's safeties( Taylor led the team in tackles, not Lemar Marshall). Landry is as fast a safety to come out as I've ever seen, but anyways back to what I'm trying to say- We have Starting Caliber ends and tackles they just aren't elite either on an island or creating a rush together. One D-lineman isn't going to change that.


LaRon was clearly the best defensive player in the draft and is going to start in the first two games despite what Gibbs says


Gibbs has also stated that were the D-line not addressed in the draft, it would be pursued in FA or trades



Landry will shine and I believe our secondary will contribute many turnovers this season. besides, Carlos Rogers is a terrible CB without a safety net

Well, one reason is depth. None of those guys you mentioned are starters imo.

Another reason is PP's injury, how will it hold up?

Another reason is the exotic shemes that Gregg likes to run that utilizes A LOT of safeties moreso than DB's.

I think this will open up PP ability as a utility man instead of locking him soley into being the SS.

Laron Landry is no Archuletta. People act like we passed on Julius Peppers for Landry. Landry was the best D Player available. and with Prioleou coming off of a torn achiles..we can't just pass a great, potential pro bowl safety or a D lineman just because we need one.

Who do you take? A 19year old who has had weight problems. Or the second best pass rusher just because you 'need' one.

Carter was coming along well, and there still remains a possiblity that we can find a gem at D-End on the second day, or via a trade.

i dont understand why everyone is complaining about having the best safety tandem in the league the next ten years. a lot of our problems last year were due to giving up the big play down the field. the big play will not be possible for opposing offenses with fire and brimstone deep in the secondary. it isnt like we had great pass rushers when our defense was ranked 2nd and 9th. we just need to cover better and execute assignments which we sucked at last year.
