Imus, Nappy Heads, Hos, and the 'Skins

Not sure if this is the right forum but suppose the Rutgers team had been some Indian school from a reservation and Imus had called the players "Redskin Squaws" instead of "Nappy Headed Hos."

Would it have been offensive?

Does where the words "Nappy", "Ho", "Redskin", and "Sqauw" came from matter?

Does the size of the public outcry have anything to do with the size and political clout posessed by the "black" community as opposed to that posessed by the "red" community?

Just wondering.

Maybe if the "red" community had the services of a d-bag like Sharpton.

Well, I'm English and white, so I've been conditioned to believe that I have no place in this discussion except to beg for forgiveness, and apologise for the sins of my race.

It's all my fault.

As it happens, the "red" community aren't the ones upset at the Redskins organization . . . just some PC lawyers who "care" (and have dollar signs in their eyes). My 2 cents

You posted in it meaning YOU continued it, Why is it so touchy to talk about? Maybe if it were talked about it wouldn't be so taboo or misunderstood. Being black doesn't give us the right to say whats too touchy and what's not.

My mother decribed my hair doo as nappy headed on many occasions and never came away thinking more than I needed to comb my hair.

For you to now try to group Imus with everyone that dis-agrees with what hwppen to him is just as short sighted has the statements that upset you.

This type of hypersensiivity is why race relations are such a disaster in America. If everyone has to walk on eggshells, it is just a time bomb waiting to go off. Hopefully we can find some common ground through football, though the Redskins, through whatevahs.

Thanks for your opinion.

Sorry, we don't believe in censorship. You're in the wrong house.

Now how about following the rules... like no swearing in public forums - not even characters in place of letters.

Thanks.

Somehow I don't think taking down a post on a message board is going to fix race relations and undo slavery. Some might actually argue that the real road to peace and equality is through effective communication.

True,so true. We have to be human. After all, we are all in this together brother. How about a big hug and we can all go back to talking football !

Um...we did? Actually slavery has gone on from thousands of years ago to the present day and even if you talk American slavery there was a lot of direct opposition to it here and a lot of other's (African chiefs, British merchant's, Caribbean plantations) involved in it. This statement just isn't true in any way.

DaRealistJoka wrote:PLEASE TAKE RESPONSIBLITY FOR HAS HAPPENED...it can't be swept under the rug

By what right do you demand we cringe and apologize for things we didn't do? Slavery was a horrible thing, but I didn't do that and no one alive in this country today was involved in it. Isn't a better solution to live in today and fight for all Americans to have equal opportunity to better their and their family's lives then post crying posts about what our great, great grandparents did or had done to them and how it's our fault?

Interesting coincidence.

I was a judge in an Eastern Canada High School Debate Tournament over the entire weekend. Exhausting and exhilarating!

One of the resolutions debated brilliantly by two teams was:

Let it be resolved that the European Colonial Powers that slaved and exploited African States owe compensation to their victims.

With excuses to most, the arguments advanced by those young and brilliant minds were truly astonishing, creative and well supported by historical facts, and they surpass by far the quality of the average political posts made in this sports website.

You might wish to know that the affirmative WON the debate. The conclusion was that the Victims of those crimes deserve ...

.... an official APOLOGY.

As I do not like to express political opinions in this forum, I only wish to point out the coincidence.

Sorry for any flames I may have incited. Clearly Imus messed up. Just thought it was an interesting question.

Also sorry if I used the wrong forum. I just didn't think the Lounge was right and I thought Smack would be non-serious and too volitale.

I'll stick to straight football for a while.

Thanks y'all.

I totally disagree. If nothing is discussed how can a resolution be achieved? You can't expect someone/people to grow and to understand your point of view if you don't express it.

This is the sort of discussion that can get very ugly, very quickly. But it would be more beneficial if the discussion actually took place, rather than people being shouted down just for even daring to speak. My 2 cents

Due to the forum, I can't give you the specific name of the program I'd like to reference here. It may suffice to tell you that it's a series on Showtime hosted by Penn Gillette and Teller. (All that to avoid typing a seven-letter word...I love it!)
Anyway, "reparations" was a topic of one of the shows a season or two ago. It was cathartic to see a man of color marching on a city in North Carolina, all decked out in the regalia of the Confederacy, and proudly carrying the bars and stars.
Ignorant? Hardly. The man was a former president of an NAACP chapter, and not in the least bit crazy.
He feels compelled to wear the uniform of the people who fought for his beloved South, and believes that slavery was going to end anyway.
I was very uncomfortable at first glance, but after hearing his take...I think it's a wonderful way of appearing to play Devil's Advocate while actually delivering a much more subtle message: "Nobody owns me".
