Nice pickup! Get a quality player at a position of need, and not break the bank!!

Macklin, 5-0 and 206 pounds
Did we sign a cornerback or a bowling ball?
Hopefully that's a Fitzy typo.
Great signing. Veteran talent for minimal price.

I like this signing. Like what has already been said in this thread; he's a good depth player on the cheap.
If the Briggs trade doesn't go through then this offseason will have been a success in my opinion.

According to NFL.com, He's 5-10, 206, but that's funny.

Great signing, I cant believe he took less money to play for us. He is from VA so that had something to do with it.
Good Job

It could also be at 28 he figured playing for coaches like Gibbs/Williams for a year in a secondary with clear opportunity to play could lead to a nice payday next year, better then what he would have gotten now.
That's no insult, I like if he's thinking long term instead of short term dough.

Wow, that came out of nowhere. Here's what I am most surprised about:
John Clayton wrote:Sometimes, the voice of Joe Gibbs can have a great impact.
Macklin
That had to be the case Thursday when Gibbs, head coach of the Washington Redskins, talked Cardinals cornerback David Macklin into accepting a one-year deal with the Redskins over three more lucrative deals with other teams. Macklin agreed to a one-year, $760,000 deal Thursday.
The Chiefs, Eagles and Saints had better financial offers on the table, but Macklin agreed to fit within the Redskins' cap restraints and accept a deal for the NFL minimum, along with a $40,000 signing bonus. The Chiefs were offering him two years of security.
Instead, Mackin, 28, decided to compete against three other veteran Redskins cornerbacks for playing time. Macklin had seven starts last season for the Cardinals and played 41 percent of the defensive plays.

Damn, that's sweet. Gibbs is the man! And say what you want about "The Danny", but the guy is an exceptional salesman. Well done boys!
It
would be interesting, I might add, to know what Gibbs said to Macklin to entice him into this deal; one year for the league minimum.

Yes, but most players don't go for that and agents will typically try to steer them away from contracts like that. If Macklin gets hurt next year, he's screwed. Players usually want a multi-year deal for security. But something must have caught his fancy.

Comment: wrote:Macklin is extremely competitive and consistent. He works hard and plays taller than his listed size. He is tough, aggressive and can high-point the ball. He has very quick feet and plays under control. He has good short-area skills and is very effective in cover 2. He shows excellent cover instincts, understands route concepts and makes good decisions from off coverage. He can squat and close quickly against three-step drops. He is very effective in run support. He will attack downhill and is a solid hitter and wrap-up tackler. But Macklin lacks quality size and athleticism for the position. He isn't very effective in press coverage. He lacks top-end speed and struggles to recover if his jam isn't perfect. He has some trouble downfield against bigger receivers and on jump balls. He is much more effective in the slot than out on an island.

Thought that looked funny. He was actually a 3rd round pick.

Why dont we say the same thing to every free agent and not spend all of our money every year??

Adam Schefter reported on NFLTA that although Macklin is from Virginia and a big Redskins fan he chose to play in Washington for less money because he always wanted to play for coach Gibbs.

Redskins signed cornerback David Macklin to a one-year, $760,000 contract. The deal includes a $40,000 signing bonus.
The former Cardinals' starter could upgrade Washington's dime defense.

I like this signing, back in 2004, he had 74 tackles and four interceptions. He is going to be a great asset in the dime package!

This guy is an over achiever from Penn State who I wanted the Skins to draft as a rookie. What a great story that he loves the Skins and agreed to play for us for less.
I heard Gaines Adams was a Skins fan too btw.
Guys, I have a theory here...
1) We have heard Gibbs say that moving up is apparently easier than moving down.
2) We've heard that the Lions were after Springs during the trade talks for Bly.
3) The Lions have yet to sign any replacements for Bly.
4) We have now added Smoot and Macklin.
5) We've heard that the entire staff showed up at the Georgia Tech pro-day.
I'm just sayin'...

Might you be suggesting that the Skins may want to trade Springs and our 6th pick to the Lions for their 2nd overall pick, so we can select Calvin Johnson?
Well, regardless, I like the signing of Macklin.

^^I'm going to copy funbuncher's post to the draft section under the CJ thread. I think it deserves further discussion.

This is a huge signing, why...because it signifies that The Skins will in no way target a defensive back in the first round of the draft and that we will not be trading for samuel or bly...
However, if I springs I would not start settling down anytime soon,
If Calvin Johnson drops to second in the draft the redskins will trade for him... Gibbs loves him and Snyder loves wide recievers...Detroit is not set for any player at second and could use two quality guys out of that pick...very possibly springs and then hopefully Brady at 6th and if not there are a variety of other possibilites
