Falcons reportedly will deal backup QB Schaub
ESPN.com news services

The deal would net the Falcons a second-round draft pick, along with other possible compensation.

The Falcons had made a $2 million offer to Schaub, meaning that any team that signed him to an offer sheet would have to surrender first- and third-round draft choices.

With the trade, the Falcons would reaffirm that Michael Vick is the team's starter. Schaub likely would become the Texans' new starting quarterback to replace former No. 1 overall pick David Carr.

Schaub has completed 81 of 161 career passes with six touchdowns and six interceptions.

So the Texans aren't going to draft a QB now, I guess. What happens if Vick gets hurt again?

They (Falcons) have six picks in the first five rounds, I imagine they'll draft someone to develop. I am a little surprised by this though.

I'm honestly surprised at how much Schaub brought in. 2 slots higher in the first round, okay...but 2 2nd round picks?

yeesh.

I think that if the Texans sure up their offensive line and bring in a 2nd receiver, they will be a pretty good team. Now, had they have done the same thing last year, Carr would have had a better season.

I wonder how good Schaub really is. The only times I've ever seen him play is when Vick went down a couple years ago. That's a lot of picks for a gamble.

Schaub's new deal with Texans finalizes trade
By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

The trade that sent Matt Schaub from the Atlanta Falcons to the Houston Texans not only made the three-year veteran quarterback an instant starter, it made Schaub -- who has yet to win a regular-season start and who barely completed 50 percent of his pass attempts in three seasons with the Falcons -- a very rich man.

League and team sources confirmed that Schaub has signed a six-year, $48 million contract with the Texans, a move that officially consummates the trade. As part of the deal, Schaub -- who played golf with Houston coach Gary Kubiak on Monday in a get-acquainted session, the Houston Chronicle reported -- will receive $7 million in guarantees.

Schaub, 25, will earn roughly $20 million in the first three years of the contract.

After the first three years, the Texans must pay Schaub a $10 million option bonus in March 2010 to trigger the final three seasons of the contract, or he becomes a free agent. This is the same Houston team, though, that paid the soon-to-be-discarded David Carr a "buy back" bonus of $8 million last spring to reinstate three years of his contract that had voided.

On Wednesday night, agent Joby Branion termed the Schaub deal "a real contract" -- meaning it was a legitimate deal for a starting-caliber quarterback -- and he was accurate in that assessment.

Certainly the economics of the deal all but mandate that Schaub will be the Texans' starter. And for Schaub, a third-round choice in the 2004 draft, it represents a financial windfall. As a rookie, Schaub signed a three-year, $1.365 million contract. It included a signing bonus of $445,000 and annual base salaries at the NFL minimum.

Had he signed the one-year restricted free agent qualifying offer the Falcons made him early in the spring, Schaub would have had a base salary of $2.3 million for 2007. There was, his agents told ESPN.com more than a year ago, no way that Schaub would have considered a long-term deal that would have carried him past the 2007 season, since he would have been eligible for unrestricted free agency at that point.

Whether Schaub would have been able to earn more by signing a one-year contract with the Falcons for 2007, and then going into the open market as an unrestricted free agent next spring, is now a moot point and a matter of speculation.

Suffice it to say the contract that he signed to complete the Wednesday trade agreement is a healthy one.

As for the Falcons, the trade allows the cap-strapped team to essentially recoup the $2.3 million qualifying offer it made to Schaub and invest that money elsewhere. And the haul the team received in the trade -- a swap of first-round choices in 2007 and second-round picks in the 2007 and 2008 drafts -- provides Atlanta with considerable flexibility.

The Falcons now own three selections among the top 44 picks in this year's draft: the eighth choice in the first round and the seventh and 12th selections in the second stanza. Armed with that kind of ammunition, the Falcons could parlay those three choices to move up the draft board in the first round, perhaps to nab hometown hero Calvin Johnson, the former Georgia Tech wide receiver. Or the Falcons could combine the two second-round picks to acquire another choice near the middle of the first round.

Most teams use a chart, principally developed by former Dallas and Miami coach Jimmy Johnson, that assigns a points value to every choice in the draft. The corresponding points for the eighth pick in the first round is 1,400. The two second-round choices owned by the Falcons are worth 510 points (the seventh choice in the round) and 460 points (the 12th).

The total points value for the Falcons' three choices in the first two rounds is 2,370 points. On the points chart, the second overall choice in the entire draft, owned by Detroit -- which is rumored to be interested in trading back -- is worth 2,600 points. Atlanta would fall a little shy of that, but not by much, with its 2,370 points for the three choices in the first and second rounds.

But the Falcons have more than enough points to trade up to the No. 3 overall pick (points value: 2,200) or the fourth choice (value: 1,800 points), if they desired. By combining the two picks in the second round, with a total value of 970 points, Atlanta could net the 17th overall selection (points value: 950) in the first round.

The early read is that the Falcons, who definitely need to replenish their talent base and desperately require reinforcements at a number of key positions, will simply stand pat and exercise all three of their high-round choices. That should, in theory, net Atlanta three top-tier prospects who could play quickly for first-year coach Bobby Petrino.

But in making the Schaub trade, the Falcons have provided themselves the potential for maneuvering up the draft board if they want, and for being active and creative in the early stages of the lottery.

If the trade didn't immediately worry David Carr, I'm sure that huge contract does now...

Now what happens to Davd Carr? Who would you rather have on your depth chart Brunell/Collins or Carr and (your pick of #8 or TC)? Carr is a fairly good QB that was on a horrible team.

Instead of trading with Houston, how about Atlanta? We give them our 6th pick for their 8th pick and their (worst) 2nd rounder (they have two now). That would be sweet. I'm thinking the Falcons made this trade with Houston to get the picks necessary to trade up for Calvin Johnson.

The Lions might be willing to do a deal if they're only dropping to 6 and get Atlant's best 2nd round pick! I hear the Lions coach wants a Defensive player...there are NO defensive players worth picking at 2, but there is at 6.

In the end the Falcons would trade Schaub, their 2nd rounder this year to move up to get Johnson...

The Falcons 1st and low 2nd are worth 1860 pts while the #6 is only worth 1600 - the #2 is worth 1800. They could talk to each other and come out better.

When did Schaub become such a hot commoditie? THis guy has never started a whole season. Falcons trade spots and aquire a second round for Schaub. Skins get a sixth round pick and trade away a solid player. Go figure? Damn Vinny C!! Good thing he is gone soon.

There's no question that they're taking a tremendous risk, and sure I guess that takes guts. But the problem with this team isn't the QB. What does it matter if you can't even get the linemen to protect your quarterback? Carr was routinely left out to dry as this team gave up sacks in bunches and set NFL records for sacks allowed. I don't even think Schaub is better than Carr, but that's the thing, not many people have even seen Schaub ever play.

Do they even have the weapons for a move like this to make sense? They have old and overrated running backs like Ahman Green and Ron Dayne that will take carries from Wali Lundy, their most promising runner. Their only real playmaker at receiver is Andre Johnson; Eric Moulds is starting to get up there in age and he's approaching 34.

I do like what they've done with their defense and they've done a pretty good job with drafting guys like DeMeco Ryans, the defensive rookie of the year. They still should have taken Reggie Bush in last year's draft and no matter what Williams does a lot of their fans will always believe this, especially after the amazing year the Saints had. Was that all because of Bush? No, but he brought a lot of different abilities and offensive looks for that team.

This team can definitely improve, but in that division, it won't be easy at all.

You can't just honor a team for making moves just to say they're making moves or trying. They have to make sense, and at least to me, I don't think they do.

What I was trying to point out in my post. Was that our team gets a sixth round pick for trading a potential pro bowler. The falcons trade away a player and get a second round pick! Our front office could of at least gotten a third rounder at the least a fourth rounder. But no we get a sixth pick when most of the talent will be gone.

The Texans butchered this deal all the way around.....not even a year after the unbelievable Mario Wiliams pick. Just plain embarrassing. Unless Schaub is the second coming of Warren Moon, the Texans are destined for the cellar of their division for years to come.

Also, I think most of the hype on Schaub was a product of the Vick haters across the country.....and selling papers and airtime discussing Vick and his behavioral issues.

It'll be interesting to see how Vick's, Schaub's and Carr's careers play out.

My 2 cents

I hate UVA, but Schaub is a good QB, particularly in the West Coast offense. If that's how the Texans plan to use him, he will be successful (at least comparatively). That being said, $50 mil is a lot of money, but I haven't seen the breakdown of his contract either, to know how much of that he will actually get. Remember ST had a $40 mil rookie contract, but a lot was contigent on him making the pro bowl 5 times consecutively or something to that effect.

Hands down? Brunell.

Sure, Carr and Collins might seem like sexier picks, but combined, they don't have the near enough the experience Brunell has.
