As for LaVar, we made more calls today and continue to hear that he has been down in the dumps lately and pondering retirement. Have not been able ot track him down just yet - so this is all what other players are hearing at this point - but hope to do so.

Had a nice conversation with LaVar Arrington's agent, Kevin Poston, this morning to go over some things. There have been a lot of rumors out there about LaVar possibly retiring, and several of his former teammates have suggested to me they had talked to him and thought that to be a possibility.

Poston says LaVar is about a month away from being to run and jump as necessary to pass an NFL physical, but is making good strides recovering from the Achilles injury that ended his season and led to his release by the Giants. Poston said LaVar is working hard and, while not entirely ruling out a change of heart at some point, said the former Pro Bowler has every intention of playing football in 2007.

"Things could change at some point, but as of this moment LaVar is focused on playing this season," Poston told me while I jotted down notes in the canned-food isle of my local Safeway (thank goodness for cellphones). "I just spoke to him again over the weekend and he wants to continue playing. He's progressing well and LaVar is still young. Injuries are a part of this game and he's getting over the Achilles and there has been some interest in him (as a free agent) already. You look at the money being spent out there on guys who are 33, 34 years old, and LaVar is 28 (turns 29 in June) and has some good years left."

Poston equated Arrington's situation with that of Ty Law a few years back, where he entered the free agent market late due to health concerns, then ended up making solid money. LaVar has not been healthy since 2003, however, so I doubt he's going to be get anything other than incentive-laden deals at this point.

I told Kevin about some other players saying LaVar seemed down, and he said that LaVar has been in good spirits, but, through the course of another tough recovery, had times where he thought more about life after football. I got the impression that coming back wasn't a 100 percent slam dunk for LaVar, and may not still be if he can't pass a physical in another 6 weeks or so.

The bottom line is that this dude is going to have a lot of possibilities after the game is over, regardless. He has a natural charisma, loves being around people, is articulate and out-spoken. I could see him being on a reality TV show, doing some acting, working in the media as an analyst or heck, if his body was up to it, doing some kind of promotion with the WWE or something.

Kevin agreed that LaVar could go in several different directions when he is finished playing, but said that could be several years off.

"He's got to be able to run and jump and do all the things he needs to do to play football, and we're just not there yet," Poston said. "We're kind of in a holding pattern right now, but we've heard from some teams and right now LaVar is committed to playing football."

He wasn't bad on the four letter network gig he had

But he says he want to continue to play...

If he can't play I think he has a very bright future in front of the camera, so he continue to play i hope he can get back to full strength and is able to get back to the level of play he use to have. As a Redskin... I don't see it (even with Smoot coming back I don't see "the danny" letting come back even if it's to retire). As long as it's outside the NFC East, I wish him the best of luck.

For some reason it took me a while to come to this conclusion, but looking back...

Lavar gave his all every down he was out there (didn't matter that no one else knew what he was doing SOMETIMES), he gave 110% and thats what we as fans want, 3 out of 5 years he went to Hawaii as a Redskin and was known as Mr. Redskin for years without doing any damage to the name. No off field issues, other than after the injuries kicked in and he had a position coach the may have been "full of himself". Isn't this what we want from the players. It goes without saying that he put the Redskin Fans before most things most times when he was here.

I was a huge supporter of his until the endless crying over the $5 mil. I don't doubt it was discussed as many numbers are in a contract negotiation, but after sinking $60 mil into the guy that he was only obsessed with $5 mil more not in his contract royally pissed me off and still does.

Then there were the accusations it was intentional. Sure, if you're Snyder you sign a guy to a $60 million contract and screw him out of a bonus to sour the well. I question Snyder's judgment but no one as successful as him is that flat out stupid.

And after committing to $60 mil we had to keep hearing how this wouldn't "affect his play." I think for $60 mil that shouldn't have been a question, yet it was an endless one.

OK, he thought it was there and the initial reaction didn't piss me off, but that we were STILL hearing about it two years later burned that bridge for me.
