A.J. Feeley has agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension through the 2010 season, the Eagles have announced. Feeley, reaquired prior to the 2006 regular season, will apparently settle into the position of the No. 2 quarterback for this team in 2007 and beyond.
Jeff Garcia will likely enter free agency as an unrestricted free agent and the Eagles will likely look to the draft for a third quarterback.
Feeley saw his most extensive action in 2006 in the regular season finale when he completed 22 of 33 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns in the victory over Atlanta.
Entering the final year of a two-year contract he signed after his release from the Chargers last summer, Feeley wanted some clarity on his situation with the Eagles.
He got it.
"A.J. Feeley has been very productive as a starting quarterback in Philadelphia," said general manager Tom Heckert. "He's won some games at crucial times for this franchise and he gives us a great amount of confidence as a back-up to Donovan McNabb. A.J.'s proven to be very comfortable in this offensive scheme and we look forward to having him in the fold for the next several years."
Said offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg of Feeley: "I think highly of A.J. Feeley. He's a big guy who can drop back and throw with the best of 'em. You saw him play against Atlanta and certainly he's done it before."
Feeley was originally a fifth-round draft pick by the Eagles in 2001 and came on in a big way late in the 2002 season, guiding the Eagles to a 4-1 record to help them clinch the top seed in the NFC playoffs that season.
But after the 2003 season, the Eagles decided to ship Feeley, who was coming to the end of his rookie contract, to Miami for a second-round draft pick. That choice turned out to be wide receiver Reggie Brown.
Feeley started and struggled in Miami behind a porous offensive line in 2004 and then was traded to San Diego midway through the 2005 season. Feeley was released by the Chargers last summer and promptly signed by the Eagles to a two-year contract.
Now he has some long-term security with the Eagles, and the team has long-term security knowing Feeley is in a backup role to McNabb through 2010.
This is a good move, Garcia is sure to more on now.
