i cant remember where i saw it but i saw an article saying that the running back for the lions is going to miss half the season with the foot injury from last season. there is speculation now that they may be looking at taking a running back with the second pick. please dont make this into a calvin johnson will fall to us so we can draft him. the only reason that i would be happy about that is that we would be virtually guaranteed of being able to trade down and get more picks. im just glad that if this news about the lions is true then there is a good chance that we may have our choice of all the defensive players on the board. that or calvin johson may fall to us so we can draft him

I dont think we need or want Calvin Johnson. There are more positions that need immeadiate improvement and WR isnt one of them.

WR is one of the absolute last things we need.

If we don't take a defensive linemen I'd be furious.

ok guys reread my post!!!!!! i said lets not turn this into a we need calvin johnson thread!!!!!! hence the tongue in cheek last sentence with a smiley to emphsize that i was joking. i realize that we need to get a defensive lineman in the draft. that is why i said that i was happy if this was true because there is a good chance that ALL the defensive players may be on the board at number 6 and we can have our pick of any of them.

We dont need CJ but we do have a need for a tall possession WR. I said WR, not TE so dont mention ey.

I think that if he is at that position you take him and try to trade him....See SD Chargers two years ago. He won't be available. I think that Cleveland or TB will take him first. But if you could draft him and then trade him to NE for their first round picks....(they need a WR) then you get a two for one deal.

it would be an interesting proposition if calvin johnson fell to us. we might get quite a few phone calls. i dont know if id want to fall all the way to the 20s though.

If Calvin Johnson happens to fall to us at 6, we could trade to Atlanta..they apparently want him very badly. They need WR help for Vick and he's a hometown guy.

We could get their pick at #10, their 3rd rounder this year and their 2nd rounder next year.

Even with their third the Pats get the "better value"

#6 = 1600
#24 + #28 + #124= 740 + 660 + 48 or 1448
Their two first rounders, their second, and third is about even
740 + 660 + 132 + 48= 1580

Of course the Patriots value their picks too much to do this! I don't think that they would go for the 2 1st rounders and the 3rd, even thought they are coming up on the long end of they trade.

Now I personally would go for Samuals, the Pats #28 pick, and their third for the #6.

I don't think that the Pats have any intention of signing Samuals, they are just trying to get a draft pick from whomever signs him.

Trading down always sounds like a smart plan but it's a lot easier said than done.

Who says the Patriots want to trade up? They are notoriously stingy about handing out big contracts (like the one the 6th overall pick will get) and they are all about the team over individuals. What makes you think they'd trade multiple draft choices to move up and get one player and then hand him a huge contract. Doesn't that completely go against their team philosophy?

I hear what your saying, in years pass they would have let Asante Samuels walk but they tagged him this year. Brady is running around making babies, and they let a assistant go to the Jets without any squabble


I guess going into the playoffs with a bunch of ex-Gator WRs can really do something to your mindset

Yeah, it tells you the value of a WR, next nothing. The Pats proved that even Gator WR (read not NFL caliber) cna look good if the QB is great. I still wonder what Jerry Rice would have done on the Redskins with their lack of tallent at the QB possition or how far past 1500 catches Monk might have had had Montana and Young been throwing the ball to him.

I don't think that Samuals will be back with the team. The pats are trying to get something for a player that they don't want to pay him whatthe market will bare.
Th Pats came alwful close to winning another SB. I think that they will upgrade their WR corps, but I don't think that they will go overboard. The Pats understand that the QB makes the WR, not the other way around. They will draft someone or plug in a castoff from another team. Maybe even David Patten.
