NYTimes:Jets Intrested in Champ Bailey...

The article :
When the Champ Bailey sweepstakes begins at the scouting combine in Indianapolis this week, the Jets will be among the teams making a pitch.
The Washington Redskins put Bailey, one of the N.F.L.'s elite cornerbacks, on the trading block last week, and the Jets have inquired about what it will take get him as part of a sign-and-trade deal. They plan to meet with Bailey's agent, Jack Reale, in Indianapolis, a football official with knowledge of the Jets' plans said.
Jets General Manager Terry Bradway declined comment.
The Jets are expected to release cornerback Aaron Beasley this spring and are in the market for a top-flight cornerback to pair with Donnie Abraham to shore up their secondary.
But plucking Bailey, 25, from the Redskins will not be easy for any team.
Reale said Tuesday that a "significant number" of teams are interested in Bailey — the Detroit Lions have publicly acknowledged their interest — and that a trade would be costly.
The Redskins had been negotiating an extension with Bailey, who last summer rejected a reported nine-year, $55 million offer, including $14 million in guaranteed bonus money. In addition to meeting Bailey's financial demands, a team would have to meet the Redskins' demands, too, and speculation has centered on their seeking first- and second-round draft choices, perhaps both in the April draft. (The Jets have the 12th overall pick in the first round.) For the Jets, who have holes at receiver and linebacker, that price may be too high, particularly because a rich class of free-agent cornerbacks will come on the market in March.
Bailey is eligible for unrestricted free agency, too. But if he is not traded by next Tuesday, the Redskins will almost certainly designate him as a franchise player, which will allow them to retain negotiating rights.
Bailey was the seventh overall pick in 1999, and in five seasons he has never missed a game. He was selected to the Pro Bowl the last four seasons.
He has 306 tackles and 18 interceptions in his career

The more the merrier, should just drive the price up and hopefully we can get more picks, something we have missed over the last year or two.

You do need picks....But remember not every player in the draft in going to be an impact player....

not every player is asking for the world either.Mr.Show Me the Money needs to make the playoffs more than once to ask for that amount. How much more does he want. The probowl is full of big names with high wages. It is about names in the bowl not hard working players.

Jets General Manager Terry Bradway declined comment.
That's because GMs aren't allowed to say, "Champ Bailey? What are you kidding? We can't even afford to keep our own players here?"
hey Smizz... The jets are only 1.28 M dollars under the cap... where is the cash going to come from? Who would they cut?

by SirSmizzy
The Jets will be cutting...Mo lewis,Marvin Jones,Aaron Beasley....Take into consideration i DIDN't write this article either.....
You like to poop on the Jets an awful lot for someone who's team is less that average...But im not going to get into that today....

Uh Smizz... hello? PG forum remember? Let's keep the profanity to the Smack forum.
I don't like slagging on your team so much as just Bradway and your frugal owner. I actually don't give a crap about the Jets to be honest with you. You're an AFC team that has little bearing on the season of a Redskin fan.
I didn't say you wrote the article Smizz... little edgy today? I wanted to know from a jet's perspective who the team would cut to facillitate the money to do the deal, I meant nothing snide. Because to be honest with you, if you weren't on this board, the words Jet would never get typed into my keyboard, so I asked you figuring you'd know who your team would have on the block.
So in your opinion, is Champ Bailey worth cutting those 3 guys as well as not having enough money to do anything else to fill any needs? just curious, and I'm not trying to place any type of comparison to the Jets signing Bailey and the Redskins doing the same... just wondering if yyou thought Champ was THAT good.

I don't want to get rid of Champ Bailey he's the best Corner in the game, but if he doesn't want to be team player he'll have to go. I'd Rather have the next Lawrence Taylor (Arrington) then Champ Bailey.

Fair ennough...i thought that was PG...sorry...Im not edgy,im just suprised you answer every one of my posts with some sort of "poke" at my team...
I look at bailey much different than say terrell ownes...Champ is 25...Quality CB...we dont have any quality CB's and we will cutting a starter...The Jets need more than just 1 CB to contend next year in the AFCE...we are going to trim the "fat" off this defense and we need bodied to replace them...i cant see giving up this years #1 for him...we need it too much...
Will our FO change their frugal patterns...
I don;t think so....I made this to put in my sig...but i was denied.

Two things... one... why take it as YOUR post, as you said, you didn't write the article, and the comment was directed at the article not you.
But you took it personally because I spoke out about the Jets which brings us to the second thing... this is a REDSKINS board. What do you expect? We don't care about the jets, we don't care about the Cowboys, we don't care about the Eagles, we don't care about anybody except our Redskins. If you don't want pokes made at jets threads, then i suggest you make them on a Jets board because i think you're kidding yourself if you think you'd be even half as well received on other redskin boards.
No pics allowed in anyone's sigs, so it certainly wasn't personal... but since you can have a custom avatar???
But if you really feel the same way as the banner does then I just have to question why you would take issue with me poking fun at that same GM? Trying to pick a fight?

Anything i post about the jets here is redskins related...This is a football message board isn't it??There are other forums than "hog wash"....anything thats not related to the skins i put in it where it suppose to be...

I didnt say it was personal....didnt even hint at it...someone is edgy today...its you...Relax..im in a good mood today boss.
But if you really feel the same way as the banner does then I just have to question why you would take issue with me poking fun at that same GM? Trying to pick a fight?
Its the exact opposite...you want to pick a fight with me....I made the banner and yes bradway is horrible....and woody seems to be cheap...do i need YOU to remind me of this in everyone of your posts???Do i come here and remind you in evey post that you had 5 wins last year...or that your Pro Bowl CB will be wearinbg a new uniform next year?
If you need to validate your 5 wins by saying were cheap...go ahead...whatever makes you sleep better.
If you want your MB filled with nothing but biased redskins junk...then just say so.

Boy Smizz... now you're taking EVERYTHING as an attack. I guess you missed the thread congratulating you on your 100th post and that now you can have your own custom avatar and I will make you one of whatevr you wanted. And I guess you missed that I thought it was a real accomplishment to make 100 posts on a 'foreign' board... and then here's this last post... where you just snivel and instead of answering the football question, you go on a tirade. This just stinks of someone who has become so defensive that they are not even able to read posts effectively any longer.
Personally, I see no hope of any further intelligent conversation with you if that's your position and you will get no commentary from me on anything you post. Thanks for your time.

Hey ANT... if you wanna call some body out, do it in the Smack forum, not here.
Smizz belongs to a huge jets fan site, a website that has EARNED press passes.... a website that has my unlimited respect because of that...
Personally, I think guys like gambit, curveball and Smizzy are what makes the board a little different... we welcome differing viewpoints... and we don't chastise them for it unless you take it to the appropriate place... which this IS NOT.

The thing is, it's all good ! I really like that Smizzy lets me break his balls in these posts, and I like that the Boss doesn't throw me out for doing it. C'mon, now. You'd have this same spat at a tailgate event, then you'd drink lots of cold, cold beer and forget it. I know I'd be missing out if I didn't respond to Smizzy, Boss, so I can't follow herd here. Sorry 'bout that. Smizzy, this ain't your usual writing tone. I know you'll come around, man. As you can see, BossHog stuck up for you just last week. He's a rabid fan AND a Site Admin. That's a tough place to try and stay neutral.

Hey Smiz - nothing attacking here ok?
If I went to Jets site and played devil's advocate how do you honestly think I would be greeted? Especially considering some of the invective by less than courteous Jets fans that came over here?
Anyway - I do believe that losing Champ will help our team for one reason - it gives us more money to pay for core members of a better overall defense - one that plays as a team. Personally, while I love LA, I wish we weren't paying him that much cause I know over time we will either lose him or other people.
I do think that with a better line (MUCH better - like a 4th string WR to Coles better) the linebackers we have in place and their backups, another good starting CB with some more depth to replace the non studs we have as second stringers we will be a good force in the NFL without being in cap trouble all the time.
With people that are dead weight being cut, not to mention the camp fodder we signed right at the end of the year I expect we can trim 18-20 mil off the cap and bring in players to get the job done without having prima donnas expect that the world revolves around them.
I think that between Champ and Lavar's contract we wouldn't have had room to do much of anything with the DL which would have been devastating.
I have told many fans on here... we had Darrell Green, but the corner opposite him wasn't the best in the world, the safeties were marginal, the linebackers were blue collar but the defensive line of Mann, Manley, Butz and Grant was hard to run against and harder to drop back and pass on, though Petitbon (the DC then) wasn't much of a blitzer. And yet we won 3 Superbowls.
With Champ gone we can bring in studs from FA, a couple of younger studs with the draft, and sign some CBs from FA to bolster this defense. We will probably spend in the neighborhood of 5-6 mil on CB, 7 mil on DL and that will leave us 5-7 mil for the rookies or more FA.
I think that all things considered, signing Champ for 8+mil a year would be a massive blow to this team as a whole, as much as Stephen Davis would have been a black hole to our budget hitting us for 11 mil last year and more every year after that. Had we kept him, signed Champ and LA as well as Jansen and Samuels at their current salaries, we would have had an amazing 34 mil against a 79 mil cap and that is with LA only counting a couple of mil against it with his new contract. 45 mil doesn't leave you a lot of room to do anything.
Say what you will, but keeping the people who cost you so much that you can't support them is a recipe for disaster.
Reminds me of the federal government - everyone wants to cut spending - no one wants to give up their pork or programs and no one wants to suggest the other person give up money for fear they will get prevented from bringing home the money... same kinda concept here - we want a better team, yet we root for one player or another... doesn't make a lot of sense when you look at the overall picture now does it?

Burp....ummm, I would just like to say that Laverneous Coles played great this year. As did John Hall, Randy Thomas, and Chad Morton.
Burp...I also liked the way the Skins ran in the opening season game...hell, even Patrick Ramsey had a long run..
Burp...I will get to my point in a sec.
Burp...I forgot what I was trying to say.

With the line we have, if we can get some blocking type TEs, Betts or Trung could have an excellent year.
Four reasons why they didn't this year:
1. Injuries
2. Spurrier was using college run plays like a lot of inside draws which are easy to stop with good college talent - and the pros have the top talent from all the colleges.
3. Spurrier was inconsistent as hell with his run game - there was no rhythym to it at all - no consistency
4. No defense - with the defense giving up scores too quick, tied in with the penalties and turnovers on the offense kept us having to pass a lot more which ties in with point 3.
I still say I would love to see Trung come out behind a pulling Dockery and Samuels and blow past the opponents - he has great speed and moves when he isn't hurt - keep this in mind - he still had over 600 yards with very little real playing time.
If he has pro schemes with pro linemen assisted by good blocking TEs then we can see what that man is capable of.
