That can't be true. The second overall pick? I have been a strong CP supporter, but if that were true I don't see how we turn it down. I suspect it's not though.
Could it be Bly and swap the #2 for the #6? That would still be a lot but would make a little more sense then Bly and the #2 pick.

Agreed it is pricey for the Lions but we are talking about Matt Millen here...
Not sure about swapping picks - That would basically make it Portis for Bly straight up which would be a rip off. Only moving up 4 spots is not that much. Esp since I can't see anyone the Skins really need at 2.
Maybe they package #2 pick for a bunch or later ones? Ahh...pure unfounded speculation... I love it.

Doesn't sound like a bad idea, they could pick up two quality defenders, and maybe one in the third round, in that scenario. The two pick is also going to be a hot pick because of Calvin Johnson. Could trade down and get a bundle. Maybe a 2nd? Then we would have Bly, a first, second, and third rounder. Not bad.

That might be a good deal for the Redskins, but - I thought Detroit already had a talented young running back?

Sounds like ole Matt may still have a soft spot for Joe Gibbs...
The question is, does moving to 2 have any value to the skins... other than as bait for another trade. I'm sure someone is desperate for a quarterback. This would likely turn into even more draft picks.

Couldn't you get fairly good trade-down return with #6 -- and still keep Portis?
I think they might just come to regret buying too much in to a "We'll be OK with Ladell" mindset.

He's gonna be out almost all of next year...VERY bad injury to his foot or ankle or somethin.

From the same report:
"You wouldn't hear any of this stuff if Jones's injury were more simple, like a clean broken ankle -- but because it's a Lis Franc job with screws implanted in the middle of his foot, the Lions can't count on him to be ready for training camp."

Not like they could with a #2, they could get a 2 and a 4 for quinn or calvin johnson or somethin.

Man im torn. i freaking love CP, but with his contract potentially getting bigger on the backload, injuries, and Ladell being a "better fit", plus the players and picks... kinda makes it tough.... Is this confirmed, or just a rumor???

Terrible trade imo. Bly is overrated and takes far too many chances and as a result can get burned quite badly. Portis is a much more valuable player than Bly. Also we don't exactly gain much by trading up to the #2 spot from #6. Getting Detroit's 3rd rounder is nice but not worth it. If this is true we would also need to find another rb or else we'll be stuck with Betts fumbling almost every game.

Not only is this a bad trade but it is essentially the same as the Portis/Champ trade, only we would be getting a cb that got benched this season.

Well if they really want Alan Branch or Gaines Adams or Glenn Dorsey (who i think will pick up a lot of early pick hype once he declares), they will have no worries because they could draft them there.
Also, if they wanted to trade down, they would more than likely get a second and a later pick from someone in the back of the first round wanting to score Calvin Johnson or Quinn. They won't get that from the 6 spot.

It's just a rumor (and a bad one at that).
True we need a corner and could use more picks but swaping 4 spots in the first round and a 3rd rd pick with Bly doesn't do it for me.
We need to be trading down in the draft to get picks and trading down from 2 instead of 6 won't bring that much more. Nate Clements will be a free agent and you have to think "the Danny" is already licking his chops for March to roll around.
Whomever the target at 6 won't be drafted at 2 if they make the trade or they are over paying. I don't see this happening.
What happen to the first rumor anyway Portis for Shaun Rogers? Throw him in instead of Bly and it might make a little since.
Both of these rumors say what the Lions are offering, haven't seen or heard anything where the Skins have Portis on the trading block. Everything out of Ashburn says he's still the starting back coming into next season.
Also trading Portis would cause a full cap hit of $8.2 million in 2007. His hit for 2007 is $7.1 million now so a trade would cost about $1.1 million more. With the cap situation the way it is Portis is the perfect example of a player to restructure. The Skins could realistically get his cap hit down to about half of what it is now so trading him would be more like adding almost $6 million to the cap.

CP is one of the best backs in the league! NO WAY we do this deal! We got someone that could very well break Emmitt Smith's record! Its dumb to trade that away even if we would get first overall picks for five years!

Not a good trade. No way!
I really, really think Portis will bounce back with a huuuuuge year. With the zone blocking scemes, which CP really likes, and Campbell opening up the passing game... watch out! I predict a career year for Portis. I hope they don't trade him.
When I first saw this, my first thought was that the only way I would trade Portis is if we got Bly, the 2nd pick AND keep our 6th pick. Could Matt Millen be that dumb? If so, I'd take it. But since I doubt this would happen, I'll stick with Southeast Jerome.

Nope, don't want to do it all.
Over.
So what if CP had a little tantrum a couple days ago. I mean if you thought Ryan Clark was a "core" Redskin, then wait until you see the mood after CP leaves.
Honestly, if CP got traded, I think both Moss and ST would ask to be traded...

My friend and I were actually talking about that after Portis' interview on 980 and I think that you may be right about them asking for trades or to be released if he got traded.

Count me as intrigued. Portis is a true gamer, but we I don't see the point of having him and Betts when we have so many holes on defense. A third round pick, Dre Bly and a four spot upgrade isn't terrible return for an oft-injured tailback with 1385 carries under his belt.
Betts averaged 4.7 a carry in 2006, a number Portis has been unable to match since he was a Bronco. Betts isn't perfect (too many fumbles, not nearly the blocker Portis is), but the dropoff from Portis to Betts is much smaller than the dropoff from Dre Bly to Carlos Rogers/Kenny Wright. I'd pull the trigger.

They can ask for whatever they want, but if they plan on getting paid in 2007, they'll suit up and honor the contract they signed. I don't want to dismiss the lockerroom impact of losing a team favorite like Portis, but seriously, they get payed to play football for the Washington Redskins, not to play football with their BFF Clinton.
Redskins Rule wrote:NO WAY we do this deal! We got someone that could very well break Emmitt Smith's record!
I hope you aren't referring to his all-time rushing record, because Portis isn't going to sniff it. He's already well behind Smith's pace, and his body is already breaking down. Portis is a great player, but let's not turn him into Jim Brown. Betts is more than capable of carrying the load on offense.
