Saunders, Williams under pressure in 2007

Saunders, Williams under pressure in 2007On Tuesday, Washington Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs made manifest that his two chief assistants, Al Saunders and Gregg Williams, would return next season. Although the announcement didn't necessarily come as a surprise, it still left many of the team's fans angry.
"We've got the people here we want to do it with. We've got people here we've got confidence in. ... It does include Gregg and Al," Gibbs intimated.
Both Saunders and Williams entered the season with plenty of hype on their respective sides of the ball.
Saunders, the offensive play-caller, signed a big-time deal with Washington in the off-season to take over the 'O', which fared well for over a decade under the tutelage of Gibbs. However, in a move that proved unfortunate for the Redskins this year, Gibbs decided it would be best to defer to Saunders, who did a brilliant job with the Kansas City Chiefs ' offense between 2001-2005. Saunders' offense in Washington has been a complete bust, however.
Despite entering D.C. with much fanfare, Saunders has guided the group to a lackluster 25th overall ranking in points scored and 19th position in total yardage. None of the players ever seemed to buy into what Saunders preached. It all began during the preseason for quarterback Mark Brunell and Co., who failed to fully comprehend Saunders' highly publicized 700-page playbook.
Williams, meanwhile, became the toast of the town just under a year ago. His defense was brilliant in the postseason, strangling the life out of the Buccaneers' offense in the first round of the playoffs, then containing Seattle's high-powered attack in a second-round defeat. Because of the defense's success last year, many were expecting a repeat this season. However, high-profile signings of defensive end Andre Carter and safety Adam Archuleta didn't work out at all, leaving the Redskins with a combined $60 million in disappointing contracts. The loss of on-field leader and outside linebacker LaVar Arrington didn't help, either, even though he was in Gibbs' and Williams' respective doghouses.
Williams, who signed a three-year, $8 million deal last year to remain in Washington, has guided the unit to a terrible 24th ranking in points allowed this year. Being 23rd out of 32 in yardage surrendered hasn't exactly endeared the high-paid Williams to Redskins fans.
When the 4-9 Redskins line up on opening day next season, there will immediately be pressure on their two main assistants. Gibbs made this bed by retaining the duo for 2007, so he'll have to lie in it if neither improve. For Washington to have any chance at competing next year, though, its two play-callers had better pick up their respective paces. Otherwise, the team will be in a similar position come this time next year.

Wow. I really can't believe that Saunders and Williams are being attacked like this, from the media or the fans. Both Saunders and Williams are proven coaches, and will ultimately have the chance to move on to be head coaches in this league at some point. I think the teams that would go after them, and the fans of those teams, would be extremely happy to have one of them as their coach. And the media would say it was a great move to get one of these guys.
I can't believe how in one breathe, they say we need stability and some longevity at every level of the organization, and in the next, say we need a new coach and a new system.
The simple fact that Gibbs, Saunders and Williams are staying together and will be returning next year, should be great news for Redskins fans. Just think, if one of them were to leave or be replaced, they'd spin it as "those dumbasses... (he, he)... another coaching turnover in Washington... (he, he)... just what they needed!).
Of coarse they're under pressure, who isn't in the NFL.

I have always said that we should be patient with Al because it's idiotic to think that he will come in here and in one season get immediate results with this offense. With one full season under his belt to see what he has to work with, the off-season and training camp will be where he has to earn his money and the players earn their's too. I don't see any major shake ups on the offense happening this off-season so this group should be pretty much intact and ready to go starting next June. Campbell, if he is smart, will take a little bit of time off after the season and then hop right back into with the playbook, film, and even working out with his receivers to get a comfort zone. I suspect that he will spend alot of time with Al this off-season working on the offense and his steps/drops and release time.
Now, as far as Williams is concerned. What he did with this defense was great but I think that his ego got the best of him in thinking that he didn't need those core guys like Pierce and Clark and even Lavar to a degree. His ego made him a bad GM in going after Archuleta and Carter and to an extent, may have something to do with McIntosh only seeing limited action. Hey, I think that his scheme is great but it may be limiting these guys' athletic abilities because they are having to think too much and make sure that they are in the right place all of the time, instead just playing the game. He's got to let some of that ego go and realize that it's not about showing the world how brillantly you can draw up a scheme on paper but that you still have to coach the game of football, including fundamentals and technique. He also has to realize that if you develop guys in your scheme, like he did with Clark and Pierce, you have to keep those guys here and not think that your scheme is "plug and play". You put to introverts at FS and SS (ST and AA). That was doomed from the start. Imagine if Pierce was still here to go along with Washington. Maybe you can stop the run and not give up so many big plays.
The pressure is definitely on both of them next season. Al, to get the offense an identity and clicking. GW, get this defense back to a top 5-10 that it was a year+ ago. We should now see how "brillant" they are because I seriously doubt that there will be alot of spending in the off-season this year, so they have to work with what they got, period....

THIS fan isn't attacking the decision and, frankly, THIS fan could not care less about what those fans think

Stability and consistency both sound nice until you look at cases like Dennis Green with the Cardinals or Matt Millen with Detriot. I don't believe the respective owners are doing those teams any favors by keeping those guys around. The secret to good management is knowing when to be patient and when to make heads roll. Regarding the 'skins, I think we still need to be patient.

How credible is: Connor J Byrne from the website:
www.realfootball365.com?
If we took enough time to write something, I'm sure we could get it published.

I seem to remember that both Williams and Saunders have been head coaches and got fired. But there are those that are meant to be head coaches and those that are not.

I am also willing to be patient with both these guys and really am confident that they and Gibbs will do everything they can this off-season and at next year's training camp to ensure we have the players and schemes to be successful next year.
Implying that these guys are under any more pressure because of this year is really not the case IMO. These guys are always under a great deal of pressure and if Gibbs did not have confidence that what they both can do will be in the best interest of this team and this organization then they would not be here.
Gibbs is in charge and if he thinks these are the best for the job then that is how it is going to be here.
If Gibbs thinks we need a GM then he will press Snyder to consider that. Basically as far as this football team and its structure is concerned this is Gibbs team for the next year at least.
HAIL, Hail, the gang's all here!

I disagree about Williams. He is going to be under a lot of pressure next season. Coming into this season it was assumed that he was going to replace GW as head coach after Gibbs retires. He even had a few teams interested in his as an HC for this season but he chose to stay here instead. I can pretty much gaurantee you that nobody would consider him for an HC job right now. The Skins might still consider him to be Gibbs' eventual replacement, but one more season like this one from his defense and he'll be lucky not to get fired, let alone be this team's HC.

I agree about the fact that Williams needs to get it done but I think that most here know this guy can get it done and that will be very evident here next year.
I just think that coaches in high positions and who have high aspirations already have pressure to succeed. Williams is already feeling pressure and will respond positively to it. Gibbs wanted Williams and he will also feel that responsibility.
Coaches who do not feel pressure to succeed or to improve have 2 letters before their title = "ex"

I'm okay with GW and Al returning, I get really frustrated sometimes of the way Al Saunders calls plays. But when the work, they work. The O has been fairly decent most of the season, so I'm okay with it.
