Nationals to Trade Vidro for Prospects

The Washington Nationals took a major step toward freeing room on their future payroll and breaking loose a logjam in the middle infield, agreeing to trade second baseman Jose Vidro -- who has spent his entire career with the Montreal-Washington organization -- to the Seattle Mariners for a pair of prospects that could contribute to the 2007 team, Vidro said in a telephone interview tonight.
The trade -- which is pending a physical for Vidro, expected to take place Thursday -- is a textbook example of what the Nationals say they are trying to do, eschewing success in 2007 but stockpiling players that might contribute in the future. According to sources familiar with the deal, the Nationals are due to receive Chris Snelling, a 25-year-old outfielder with a history of injuries, and Emiliano Fruto, a 22-year-old right-handed reliever with an exceptional changeup, in exchange for Vidro.

This off-season is turning out to be like the Marlins wholesale changes they made a year ago. A HUGE youth movement is happening and hopefully it will pay off in the long-run. I know that's what Bowden is focusing on.

Hopefully, we'll hit on one of them!

Um, I don't plan on hitting on either of them but I would like to see them succeed

No... they need EVERYTHING.... except maybe a centerfielder. I liked what I saw from Nook Logan this year.

They don't need a third baseman either (they need to lock him up ASAP)

But at least they are being honest about basically tanking the 2007 season. Wish that were the case more often with sports organizations.

That's why I LOVE the approach the Indians have taken, they caught a ton of heat for dealing Roberto Alomar and Bartolo Colon. The Alomar trade didn't end up netting much but was justified by his rapid decline and the Colon trade brought the team Grady Sizemore, my favorite player and Cliff Lee, a solid starter. The Indians took stock of what kind of club they had and recognized what it would take to build a winner. I can't wait for baseball to start!

Wow... I totally forgot about Zimmerman.
