Betts our #1 RB

With Betts doing quite well in these past few weeks (which certainly comes as no surprise to me), would anyone be suprised if he Redskins shopped Clinton Portis around to see what they can get for him, perhaps bolstering other areas of need, making Betts our new #1 RB for the future?

Discuss.

No way Gibbs shops CP around. As important as the run is to him, he'll just be fine to have two quality RBs in Betts and Portis (with Duckett likely gone after this year).

I dont think theyll do that, but I def do think that Betts is a better and harder runner than portis. You barely ever see Portis break through players like Betts does. We should be keeping both though, whoever takes the #1 spot, well have to wait and see, but I do think well get rid of Duckett, I've only seen him do one good run this whole year, probably the reason atlanta got rid of him.

I disagree 100% with that statement ... how quickly we forget who owns the franchise single-season rushing record

It is amazing to me how soon people (so called fans) jump ship on players (CPortis) who have been som productive for the team. I mean this guy owns the single season rushing record. I love Betts, but you gotta keep CP. I cannot believe this thought even crosses your mind. :(

I think JH is playing devil's advocate, but others on this site have disappointingly short memories

Getting rid of CP......

We shouldnt even be in a situation where this is being discussed. Its only being toyed around with because of front office has pissed away the 2007 season as far as growth is concerned. Their lack of ability to bargain without throwing away draft picks has screwed them. I dont know if Joe and the bunch are thinking of doing this but if they are, its an admittance of their inability to do whats best for the team as far as player personel is concerned.

Anything is possible and IMO, Betts and Duckett are more the traditional Skins backs. But Portis has had very good years here so far as well.

If Al Saunders has anything to do with, Portis stays. He's going to try to do the same thing he did with Holmes and Johnson in KC here with Portis and Betts. A 1-2 punch at RB. Let's be honest, both of these guys are injury prone but they are also effective when the line is blocking.

IMO, if Joe Gibbs can hire a qualified GM, tighten up this ship and hold it together until Al's offense get's clicking, we are in for some good times ahead. Once that happens, then the defense is next. Hopefully Joe can "multi-task" and get GW to get this defense back to being a top 5-10 defense to go with the coming of this offense.....

It hurts right now folks, but patience, patience, patience.....

JH - I, like everyone else on this board, is stoked to see that Betts is eating up yardage like Pastabelly at a press buffet, but, we are ignoring one EXTREMELY important component to his success: the consistency of the OL. The line that suited up yesterday, is the same line that suited up for the first game this season, and the chemistry is well under way to match the chemistry KC's team for so many years (which allowed Priest to be a beast and Larry to be downright scary -- yes, I am a poet, didn't you know it?). That line played together within the same system for years, and their success was definitely tied to their continuity on the front line.

Now, with that being said, I would love to see what our #1 back, CP, can do behind the line behind which Betts is running, especialy once he returns at 100%. CP might shatter his own record!!!

Also, on a side note: a lot of people are labeling LB as "homegrown"and a true Redskin. If I recall, the only reason we've been able to keep him so long, is because he'd been injury-riddled for so long, that we were hoding on long enough to see IF he could produce. Now'we're certainly seeing his potential, but he's still no Portis, IMO.

Of course, I hope CP is taking note of the running style that's leading o LB's success and learn from it. CP is no dummy, and I expecthim to come back, healthy, invigorated, and ready to shtter records. I see no reason why the Skins would shop him around. He's a Skin thru and thru.

I would guess that if the Redskins are going to shop a running back, it will be Betts. He has great trade value, a relatively small salary and would be a more palatable cap hit.

Saunders likes using 2 backs. I think that once the offense has gotton a grasp on Saunders playbook, both Portis and Betts will do fine. Ideally, you want 2 backs with slightly different styles; i.e. Holms and Johnson. Most teams use 2 backs in todays NFL.

So to answer your question, I hope we keep both Portis and Betts.

I know Portis is good, but I've always complained about him every year, he doesnt want to wait for a hole to open, he just wants to go whether theres nothing. I still love the guy, but I have always thought Betts was a better runner, so dont try and say im not a loyal fan  Thats just incorrect.

No one is questioning your loyalty, we're questioning the idea of calling Betts the better of the two backs

Everybody's talking about how CP broke the team rushing record but the redskins don't have a very high record anyway. If betts had a whole season the way he is running right now he would obliterate Portis' record, not to say that he would run this well for a whole season. I prefer Betts, he has better hands, vision, patience and power. But CP has better speed, agility and blocking ability. Plus CP is basically untradeable so if we could have a thunder and lightning thing goin there is nothing wrong with that. It is good to have two quality backs in this league, just look at NO, Jacksonville, San Diego, etc.

The best thing that can happen for the Redskins is to have competition at the Running back position. Everyone is quick to jump to the conclusion that Betts is now our featured guy. Have you not noticied how good the o-line is blocking? Any running back can run through the holes they have been blowing open for Betts.

Portis has shown that he can produce since he has been in the league. Betts has shown us a few games of production. If anything, Portis now knows that Betts can produce and will force CP to keep looking back over his shoulder if he is not performing. It is a win-win situation for the Redskins having 2 quality backs that can push each other to do better which in turn will make our offense better.

All good points. Plus, keeping both CP and Betts is extra insurance against injury, which has caused both to miss games in their careeer. Trying to deal either one of those guys would be both risky and stupid. Obviously, if an extremely generous package of picks came along, I might want to reconsider, but that's not going to happen.

Okay, I'll offer my opinion after having started all of this mess.

I love CP. The guy has speed, talent and a ton of heart. I love LB. The guy has power, vision, and good hands. If our OL plays like they've been playing recently and we have both CP and LB playing at the same time, they'll be unstoppable. I want both CP and LB on our offense, not just LB.

This will benefit JC greatly. Not having a drop off in performance will keep defenders on their heels. They wont be able to see Betts and think "CP is gone, we can do X,Y,X now....". If Betts can improve on his run blocking we'll notice less of a contrast between he and CP. However, Betts can't hold a candle to CP. Betts is doing his thing right now but he doesn't have big play ability. If CP was at 100% and had the line blocking for him he'd be breaking 60 yard scampers for TD's. Its nothing against Betts, he's simply not the beast that is CP. However, Betts is stepping his game up and doing his part to solidfy this offense.

I think its great and agree that Betts is our #1 back. I'll even go so far as to suggest that he will still be a huge contributor when Portis gets back. He will have all this coming off-season to work on his blocking assignments so that part of his game will not be a problem when Portis and our incredible run game become a huge factor next year.

Hey all, I just moved to Idaho so I haven't be able to watch any games since portis went down, but a question, it seemed to me that in games where CP started, he was always being given outside run calls, and as soon as he went out for a break and betts came in they would call inside runs and he would bust 5 to 10 yards, portis would come back in and back to the outside they would go. Yesterday were more of the calls up the middle with betts? I always wanted them to stuff it up the middle with portis more but they seemed to perfer the outside with him. Any thoughts?

The idea of getting rid of CP and making Betts our #1 back is assinine. Betts has had 2 really good games in a row while Portis has had 4 amazing seasons. Bett's 171 yards against Philly was awesome, but lets not forget that the Eagles have the 29th ranked rushing defense this season. They haven't been able to stop anybody from rushing the ball. All that Betts has proven the last few weeks is that he is capable of being a solid backup running back. He isn't a #1 and probably never will be. He can't pass protect worth a lick and fumbles too much. Portis, on the other hand, is a top NFL back that has rushed for atleast 1,300 yards in every season except for this one. Betts in his entire career has only rushed for a total of 2,000 yards. Portis is more elusive, agile, quicker, has better vision, pass protects better, and is a threat to go the distance every time he touches the ball. Lets not forget that despite his injuries this season and having Brunell as his qb, Portis was still leading the NFC in rushing td's before breaking his hand. Oh yea, and just last season he broke the Skins single season rushing record.
