What would you do?

Everyone yells that the Skins need to hire a GM.
Let say they hear what you are saying and the hire one.

In fact you are the man. As GM of the Washington Redskins, what 4 moves would you make to fix the team?

1. Try to trade for more draft picks. Use those picks wisely to draft linemen and defensive backs.

2. In the offseason, either through the draft or free agency, acquire offensive lineman that fit more in Saunders' system and can pass block.

3. Either through the draft or free agency, acquire a middle linebacker.

4. Figure out what exactly is going on with the defense. Is Greg Williams really as arrogant as people think? If he is and has lost his players then he needs to go. I would also fire Jackson for sure.

Since we have so many problems I'll add in a few more.....

5. Fire Denny Smith. Our special teams are a joke. Have been for years. Use a draft pick for a kicker or get one through free agency that can actually make some kicks and kick of.

6. Use a second day pick to trade for Ryan Clark.

Why would the Steelers trade a good, young, cheap, starter for a 2nd day draft pick?

Other than that I agree with these moves in principle.

With limited picks and you trying to get more FA may be the best route but who would you go after?
here's who will be out there...
Max Starks, RFA Pittsburgh Steelers
Leonard Davis, UFA Arizona Cardinals
Mike Gandy, UFA, Buffalo Bills
Eric Steinbach, UFA, Bengals
Jordan Black, UFA, Kansas City Chiefs
Dwayne Carswell, UFA, Denver Broncos
Derrick Dockery, UFA, Washington Redskins
Nat Dorsey, RFA, Cleveland Browns
Chris Gray, UFA, Seattle Seahawks
Norm Katnik, RFA, New York Jets
Ryan Lilja, RFA, Indianapolis Colts
Sean Locklear, RFA, Seattle Seahawks
Vincent Manuwai, UFA, Jacksonville Jaguars
Roman Oben, UFA, San Diego Chargers
Brian Rimpf, RFA, Baltimore Ravens
Todd Steussie, UFA, St. Louis Rams
Floyd Womack, UFA, Seattle Seahawks

Again give me a name ? Who would you target?

Linebacker:
Lance Briggs, UFA, Chicago Bears

Cato June, UFA, Indianapolis Colts
Adalius Thomas, UFA, Baltimore Ravens
London Fletcher UFA Buffalo Bills
Chase Blackburn, ERFA, New York Giants

Jackson or Gray does have to go, I'd go with Jackson also. I don't think GW is the issue - Gibbs can handle him.

Danny Smith's unit has had t's ups and downs, I'd get him some kickers before I kicked him out, I'd give up a late 1st day pick to get Clark back, but with the injuries at safety in Pitt. that won't happen.

4 moves, well Rome was not built in one day so I would make some signings, but some needs I would let go and wait till next year.
1rst round pick best player available etheir at D-line (end or tackel don't care, I think they need a fantastic D-line men and I personally don't think they have one), or DB (safety to go along with Taylor or corner). The rest of the picks won't be impact so I would draft the best player available, and get a Qb somewere for third string. The guys I would target I don't know because I don't know many college football players just teams. But a DB I would certianly look at is Oklahoma's Db he looked fantastic this year.
2. Cut Adam, he can't cover we made a mistake lets not dwell on it just move on. Cut Brunell, promote Collins to second string. The Qb we drafted will be third string.
3. Sign the best guard available, if its Dockery than resign him, if he isn't sign the best one available for the best price (no overpaying).
4. Betts is a free agent he will probably start somewere else so he probably is going to leave. So I would sign another running back so Portis doesn't have carry the load by himself and he is less likely to get hurt and will be fresher towards the end of the season.
There not glourius but it will be a step in the right direction. But our D will improve in some areas, it will prolong Portis carrer and get rid of some garbage we don't need (Brunell and Adam). It will also improve our O- line, our keep it the same so we would not be taking a step back. I would not trade any of our next years picks.
Remember I said I wouldn't fill all of our holes and would not make a bunch of glory signings because were stuck with them rather there good or not.
I would also try and get a kicker, if there is a good one, if not I would wait untill that hole CAN BE PROPERLY FILLED.

Don't have the time to look at cap implcations but I would try trading Patton. Not sure what the trade market is for linebackers but I would consider trading Marshall and give Rocky a chance to start. I would also consider trading down with our first pick, depending what kind of offers I could get.

With limited picks and you trying to get more FA may be the best route but who would you go after?

Jordan Black for sure. He is atheletic, could replace either Samuels or Jansen (I would try to get rid of one of them in offseason), and he is familiar with Saunders' style of offense. If we were able to I would also try to draft Joe Thomas from Wisconsin. He is a beast. These two moves would help inject some youth into the line.

Again give me a name ? Who would you target?

I'm not a big fan of signing too many free agents, especially older ones, but in this case I would consider London Fletcher. There are plenty of awesome players on that list of lb's but most play on the outside. I would try to draft either Willis (Mississippi) or Davis (FSU) if I didn't go the free agent route.

Danny Smith's unit has had t's ups and downs, I'd get him some kickers before I kicked him out, I'd give up a late 1st day pick to get Clark back, but with the injuries at safety in Pitt. that won't happen.

Getting Clark back is more of a pipe dream. I know that they wont let him go. As far as Denny Smith, I really think that he should go. Every year with him there has been some sort of issue with the special teams. Something always goes wrong with that unit. Time for a change.

The cap hits for both moves wouldn't be felt until 2008, what do with the saving in2007

I listed them earlier give us a name!

You could always sign him before he hits free agency, there's about a million in cap space now that could be used, TJ is probably gone but Betts might resign.

1. Clean house in the coaching staff. One HC; one OC; one DC; one LB coach; one DL coach; one CB/S coach; one OL coach; one RB coach; one WR coach; one TE coach; One QB Coach; One Spec. Tm coach;

2. Look at my current cap and salary situation to if we can restructure any contracts to get cap relieve as well as look at other ways to get us room.

3. Sign Duckett and draft or sign (frugally) FA's in the needed positions: OL, LB, DL, Secondary; guys that would fit AS's offense and guys that are fundamentally sound and athletic on defense.

4. Trade or cut the following: AA; Holdman; Patton.

And number 5 even though you asked for 4. Check GW's attitude and arrogance at the door or fire him. GW is solely responsible for the biggest defensive drop off seen in quite some time. It's under his watch that "core guys" were let go; it's under his watch that guys are missing tackles and getting burnt deep; it's on his watch that the Tom Friend article was written about the "unnamed player" pointing out what's wrong with the defense; it was on his watch that he humiliated the "face" of the Redskins, Lavar, for reasons unjust and smugly acted as if it was no big deal; it was on his watch that even when his excuse (Springs injured) came back, this defense was still giving up the big plays and could not make key third down stops. All of this, the good and the horrifically bad has happened. The bad such that he has IMO, his treatment of Lavar probably played a small factor as to why these guys have gone from top ten to bottom ten.

I can't tell you who I would target because I haven't seen all of them play and I am not doing it by name and stats. The Redskins didn't even have Rocky on their radar untill 3 weeks before the draft, how am I suppose to know in the middle of the season when I haven't even looked over game tape (which I don't plan on because its not my job). If I was a GM their might be some diamond in the rough I would really want that I never even heard of. The DE's from Nebraska I would take a look at they really looked good this season and the DB from Oklahoma I don't know their names.

1. Fire Jackson as safeties coach and comepletely re-evaluate and toy with every aspect of the defense. Retain Gregg Williams, sign a safety with coverage abilities to start opposite Sean Taylor, and hope that Proleau will be healthy enough to provide help in the backfield next season

2. Give Al Saunders 100% backing to do whatever he wants with Jason and the offense. He was hired to run his offense, and Campbell will have a full offseaon to learn it. His O was number-1 in KC, and he knows it better than anybody. It takes longer than one season to get everybody accomodated to a stystem.

3. Re-sign Ladell Betts and Derric Dockery to return as your backup tailback and starting left guard respectively. Add another lineman or two for depth purposes. This team has no backups right now... Jansen and Rabach are playing hurt, and they have to because they can't afford to come off the field.

4. Figure out a way to manage the clock. You'd think with 20 coaches, a handful of which have been head coaches, and a Hall-of-Famer calling the shots you could be at least mediocre at managing the clock. There isn't a worse team in football at this menial task though.

5. Sign a kicker you can rely on for 16 games next year, and many more there-after.

6. Give Ethan Albright a monster contract because he's been the most consistent and reliable player on this team for the past half-decade.

CP is not the kind of RB we need. We need bruisers. TJ and MS fits the kind of offense we like to run. Al Saunders can go somewhere else and let Mr. Gibbs call the plays. Too many chiefs and not enough indians. It was proven last week and time again that we like to pound the ball. Hand the freegin ball off and let Jason develop at a good pace. We're asking too much of Jason right now and it's shown. Al Saunders goes pass wacky. He doesn't have the patience that is required. The salary cap issues are going to start coming into effect after this season. This team can pound the ball. Let 'em. The least amount of changes the better. These guys can play but you can't figure out what's going on when the whole offense has been changed. At defense, what I feel that we need the most is, A PASS RUSHER! Find someone who can take some if not all of the emphasis off of having to blitz to gain any kind of pass rush. Too much is asked of the secondary when we blitz and the opposing QB can sit in the pocket and pick us apart. I'm not, and never have been a fan of the blitz. If you can't do it up front, then it's all smoke and mirrors. Last and not least, the DB's we have now save for ST, are afraid to hit. The reason why a player doesn't make a tackle is one, they're going for a knockout or two, they don't wanna hit. Time and time again I see Redskins players missing tackles and it seems that they are scared to hit! Find one person in the secondary who's not afraid to hit and most of the DB problem is solved.GW said something that tickled me when he first came here. When the little brown thing moves, go get it. That involves making the player who caught the ball pay for his actions. TO is scared to death to catch one over the middle on us because ST is gonna be there to make him pay. Look at the last game. No real big changes need to be made except for that elusive pass rusher that we might have found last week. You might know who he is.

First I would get a guarantee that as GM I would have final say over all personnel decisions. Not to say that coaches would not have input, but this Amateur Hour bit where coaches try to pick ready-made players that don't need coaching has got to stop.

1. Fire Vinny Cerrato and non-performing scouts; hold the remainder responsible for their work. I don't know exactly what Vinny does, or how well he does it. But the track record of the scouting staff and whoever is in charge of making picks, presumably Vinny, speaks for itself: really low percentage of successful lower round picks. Nuff said.

2. Our defense is getting killed by the big play, even from bad teams, and good QB's can pick us apart at leisure because they have all day to throw. This is due to a weak secondary and a poor pass rush.

Trade our top pick for a late first rounder and a mid second rounder, which we use to get d-line help and secondary help. Use remaining picks on secondary and d-line.

3. Find out which scout picked Golston and promote him.

4. Get rid of non-performing players.

There's a lot more than 4 moves to be made for this team, but here's what i would want to do

1) Sign London Fletcher to a one year contract in free agency...he's been in GW's system and knows it well. He's not the answer, but it's a huge improvement

2) Nate Clements is probably going to be way too expensive, but i think there would be a chance to get Asante Samuel in free agency. He's young and would be a good replacement for when shaun springs decides to end his career.

3) Draft Gaines Adams in the draft. If he's taken I would really try to trade down. It's more than likely we will get a top ten pick and it's not out of the realm of possibility to trade down and get a 3rd round pick, possibly even a 2nd. If Gaines Adams isn't available I would trade down and draft a LaMarr Woodley or a Victor Abiamiri late in the first and then draft Mason Crosby from Colorado with our second first day pick...we need a kicker that bad and he's easily worth a first day pick.

4) it's been said, but i'd clean house as well. one coach for one position. one coach for total control of the offensive play calling, i could care less who it is...one coach for defensive play calling. and fire old scouts, hire new ones. Give Cerrato his pink slip and wish him well in his journey, hopefully far far away from D.C.

1. This whole bringing in too many free agents takes a toll on the team chemistry and just means we have to almost start all over again. So my main focus as a GM will be to bring in maybe two free agents but Maximize in draft. So my first move as GM. 1. Draft Gaines Adams if gone by the time our pick comes around/ trade down for aditional picks. Draft best Defensive Tackle available/next pick Would go on the best DEnd available. The best Picks would go to best right guard available/LB/CB. Main focus as GM for me will be the Draft starting now hire a team of expert scouts have 10 scouts in each state hunting down talent. There job will be to eat sleep and poop football spot talent. 2. Free agency/ Id sign Dwight Freeney and Cato June since they are teammates in Indy the transition shouldnt be hard also Marcus Washington came from Indy so bringing those guys in shouldnt hurt team chemistry. 3. Sign Either Leonard Davis or Max Starkes and bring one of them in to revamp our Offensive line/ let go of Derrick Dockery. 4. Fourth move package deal Trade Patten/Andre Carter/ and Adam Archaletta for Antrelle Rolle.

I agree with you on the draft and cutting down the coaches but I disagree with bringing in London Fletcher for one year only. That's the problem with this team now.

Cut down on the amount of coaches and make the OC and the DC earn their money. I am willing to bet you that the DC and OC let their flunkies make decisions on who plays and who doesn't while they sit back and draw up schemes. The OC and DC should have input and final say into everything on their sides of the ball with Gibbs having the 'ultimate' final say. I am will to bet you, that the whole Lavar thing was not all GW but Dale Lindsay. I still find it very hard to believe that this team didn't use this guy like Dallas is using Ware and San Diego is using Merriman. These guys are LBs by title but Bill and Marty are using these guys athletic talent to pretty much rush them and let them roam.

This team needs a GM and qualified scouts and get us back to building from within and keeping them. Also, Gibbs needs to really sit down with Saunders' and come up with the "true identity" for this offense.

If we had more draft picks, i'd be opposed to getting in free agency at all. but since we only have one first day pick, we have to plug holes in free agency...but if i had my way, i'd do it without giving up future draft picks. that way, a one year contract would fill a hole until the next draft. MLB needs to be filled. we're just not good enough at that position

1) Move the franchise to London.
2-4) I'll think about these later.

1. Hire a GM. If Gibbs is team president he needs to search for a GM to run this team. Get rid of cerrato. Ten plus years at helm of a team whose only made the playoffs twice. May not be his fault but he's gone.

2. Sign our own restricted free agents. Offer Betts a reasonable contract. He probably won't take it due to him being able to start elsewhere, but don't low ball him. Same with dockery, who probably will resign. We need to show a commitment to keeping the good players that we do have.

3. Fix the offense and defense. Sit down and figure out why the defense went dead this year. Where was the passion? Fire appropriate coaches and tell greg to get things fixed. Second of all look and see if Al's offense is the type you want to run. Sure it was top 10 for a looooong time in the NFL. But did those teams win? KC didn't. The high octane offense left the defense on the field a lot and tired. Same in St. Louis. Sure they won a superbowl with it but that was back when it first started and nobody could keep up with the offense. I honestly feel that in the NFL , winning teams play great defense and pound the ball offensively. We had that last year, lets get back to it, with or without Al

4. Upgrade at MLB (move marshall to outside) , Upgrade at Corner and Safety, Upgrade depth on OL, play the best players at the end of the year to find out what we have in D. Evans and R. McIntosh

5. Trade 1st rounder for a second and third rounder. Or, since our pick will be high, a late first and third (even a second if we can get it) Draft to fill the needs at CB, Safety, LB

6. Sign innexpensive veterans. Tackle, MLB, Safety, Corner . Whatever we don't get through the draft.

Overall, our problem isn't going to be players next year. Its scheme. We'll have a healthy CP and an experienced JC. That should help things immensely. I'm sure greg has a lot of pride and will get his unit back to being one of the best again next year. This offseason we not only have to fix the style of play around here but the attitude for the future as well.

1. find a young O line guy
2. find a slightly older O line guy for cheap
3. find a young D line guy
4. sign a supervet MLB

all in all bolster our guys in the trenches.. when we win that battle our position players will excel. if JC is safe and we can run the ball everything else will follow. on D if our front four can do the job then our secondary will be much better..

also let ST loose like some sort of missle of death destroying everything he sees.
