Cornerback Fred Smoot has been benched and replaced by rookie Cedric Griffin, according to multiple people close to the situation...

Interesting. So being a big name doesn't have to guarantee you a starting spot?

Would I be insane to suggest that the Redskins could do worse than wait to see if he gets cut in the offseason and then re-sign him? He's not the greatest there's ever been, but right now, we don't have any cornerbacks capable of putting together a whole season of NFL calibre football.

I don't think I would want Smoot back - he is a bad guy.

Yes, it would be.

There Vikes have been killed on passing plays against their "elite" receiver. The "Boat man" star has been a leading target.

OK guys - thanks for the info. Since I'm not insane, then I won't suggest bringing him back. :)

How is Smoot a bad guy? Because of the overblown boat cruise thing??? Give me a break. So many athletes have gotten into much more trouble than that. That entire incident was blown WAY out of proportion by the media.

Did even pay a fine when all was said and done? It was BIG news when it came out, then it sort of fizzle out once Dante went to South Fla.

Anybody remember what the fine was? If there was one

$1000 fine and 50 hours of community service if I'm not mistaken... something pathetic like that.

This is just the latest in a fairly long line of disappointments for Smoot in Minnesota and anyone who even mentions the guy's name in 'bad Redskins moves' talks, shouldn't be given the time of day. He got paid top 10 cornerback money to be a top 30 (on his best day) cornerback.

Loved the guy when he was here, and he'll always make me laugh... but I was happy we didn't pony up that kind of cash for him when he left, and he's done NOTHING but allow his off field incident to overshadow his on-field play. He certainly hasn't earned the 6-year, $36 million contract that the Vikes gave him ($11 M signing bonus).

My 2 cents

That's not at all an indictment of Freddie, because I really like the guy... he just got overpaid IMO.

I actually hope Freddie can rebound and play some good ball again somewhere....

The SmootMobile probably won't be making any more local runs...and I don't know what I think about it. On the one hand, Smootie was okay so long as you weren't putting him on the other team's number one guy...that was Bailey's area, and it really showed when Champ was out. I also liked that he played with that horrible sternum injury and didn't whine about it.
On the other hand, once Bailey left...Smootie was already halfway out the door.
I wish him nothing but the best. He was a soldier for us.

I agree. I remember seeing him sustain a stinger on the shoulder (I think against the Bears), and he was still throwing his disfunctional left side into every tackle full strength.

Lavar said that he would throw up in the trash can during half time because of the pain.

Then again, I also agree with Boss about the money. He's getting paid a premium price to sit on the bench. . .something we all know a little too much about. Imagine having both a benched AA and Smoot -- with their salaires -- on the Redskins' roster.
