Defensive Modification

Has anyone thought about moving Carter to MLB and Marshall WLB.
Carter played OLB in SF, but did not have the coverage skills or the speed for that position. At MLB he would not be required to cover as often, but would be better againest the run (between the tackles) and blitzing. Marshall could be moved to WLB where he is better suited and the coaches will not give Macintsh an opportunity. Evans, Daniels and Wynn can rotate at DE. Does anyone think this would work. I had some ideas about AA (that doesn't involve cutting and the offense, but I'm out of time and need to get back to work.

It would not hurt to try. How much worse can our defense play? One difficulty with the MLB position is that the player must make the defensive calls and adjustments, and get everyone lined up properly before the snap. I'm not saying Carter can't do this but it certainly requires more responsibility than the OLB position and takes longer to learn.

I don't know if Carter is quick enough to play MLB. I just can't see him hitting the hole quickly enough to stuff the run. I agree, however, that something needs to be done. Marshall and Holdman just got plain pushed around all game.

MLB is not a position that you just "try out." You have to have a certain mentality to play MLB. Its not even as much about physical skills as it is a certain vocal and reckless sensibility. Carter may very well have those attributes, but it doesn't look like it on the surface.

The only modifications the defense needs to make are to get these guys to stop being so arrogant about their scheme and just coach; get back to the fundamentals of pursuit and tackling, and build depth from within and stop letting "core guys" go and messing up continuity...

We have gotten ourselves into a bad place in terms of the amount money that has been spent and the lack of draft picks. So these "guru" coaches are now gonna have to start coaching and get back to those basics. No matter what sport you are in and how long guys have been playing, they still need to be coached and motivated. They, the coaches on defense, also need to better recognize what scheme works well with the talent that they have and what doesn't and make the necessary adjustments. It is absolutely ridiculous that an injury to a starting CB at the begining of the season, basically crippled an entire defense....

I'd like to see Rocky at MLB and move Marshall back outside, he's better suited there anyway and from what little film we have on Rocky he seems like he attacks the lead blockers aggressively. G. Williams stated in the pre-season how phenomenal Rocky was at dis-engaging from blockers and how stout he is at the point of attack. Again, not much to go off of but he seems like he'd be a great MLB, not sure he has a grasp on the defensive calls though and maybe that's why he's not in the games.

Sean Taylor should be converted to OLB. He is a beast against the run, and he seems to be better suited to coverage only against TE's in the middle of the field. It seems the longer the pass, the more badly he is beaten.

I agree with roybus. Quit the arm tackles. Stay in your lane. Check the receivers at the line.

And put a fire under your ass! That alone should bump us from the #30 defense to the lower teens.

Come on people, he is having one bad year in coverage, that is goin to happen when everybody is having a bad year. Nobody said this in his first two years when he was locking up Moss and T.O. THe biggest problem is our Fat Dlinemen getting no pressure.

I like the ideal of Rocky in the middle

There is nothing wrong with Sean Taylor. First off the corner who is covering has to first do his job. The real lack of a pass rush is whats killing us. Sure our secondary has been hampered with injuries as well. We really really need a good draft in the offseason. This draft is critical and will determine our success in the upcoming three seasons. If we draft well we may be vying for the Superbowl with a mighty D. Like I said before a Stud DE like Julius Peppers, Stud OLB like Lavar, And a Stud DT like the two they have in Jacksonville and man we will be set!
