Re-evaluation of Carlos "Can't cover Grandpa" Roge

I couldn't believe what I was reading.(Artilcle from Washington Post) I've pasted it below. Rogers is saying that Joey Galloway is the fastest guy in the NFL and he can't cover him. It sounds as if he is afraid of the old man. If Rogers can't cover Galloway, the skins are in real trouble.
"Going against the fastest guy in the league and running [cover-0] and you don't get there [with the blitz], there's nothing you can do about it," Rogers said. "The only thing I can do is line up and play the call that's being made and try to execute to the best of my ability. He's a fast guy, and there ain't too much I can do."

Galloway is not among the elite receivers in the NFL, he is not bad but he is not elite. Sounds to me like Rogers is admitting that he does not have what it takes to cover a good receiver in the NFL. This is the kind of "it isn't my fault, oh well" attitude is what is killing the Redskins as a team.

He should admit he can't cover since each week teams go right at him. He lines up 10 yards off the receiver almost every down. True, the lack of pass rush makes his job more difficult, but 10 yards off the line....come on.

If this is really what he said then..........dang, we screwed up drafting him at number 9 overall!

Instead of giving Galloway a 12 yard cushion, why not bump him at the line and try to give the blitzers an extra second or two to get to the QB?

As disappointed as I am with Carlos Rogers this year (esp. when Springs was out), I'm not throwing in the towel yet.
Terrance Newman looked pretty bad in his first two years and now he's one of the better/best cover corners in the NFL.

Rogers excels the best in the "cover who?" defense.

You guys are being way too critical on Rogers on this one. If u should be mad at anyone it should be Gregg Williams for the awful play call. The play I believe Rogers is talking about is the one where we blitzed 3, the middle linebacker was on a delayed blitz (?) and galloway came from the left side across the middle. So essentially your asking your cb to cover the wr one on one, and when a receiver goes across the middle on you that is one of the toughest things to cover for a CB. Even for the best.
And galloway may not be as great as he was but he still is one of the fastest guys in the NFL. He is a good wr. And normally when you blitz with no safety help, and you don't get to the QB, your CB gets beat.
Don't get down on CR. Get down on Gregg Williams.

Carlos Rogers is not the first cornerback to have a lousy second year after a promising first one. He wouldn't be the first to come back next year and play like an all pro either. It just depends whether he takes this year as a wake up call, and wants to do whatever it takes to be an elite corner. Or is he happy to just take the money?
I'm betting that he'll be a completely dfferent player next year. But a pass rush would certainly make all of our DB's look better.

Lame excuse. Rogers didn't even look like he was trying on Galloway's td catch. He didn't make an effort to jam Galloway at the line and gave up on the play as soon as the catch was made. Then in postgame he says that he had no chance of covering him. Sorry but that's not the attitude that I expect from a starting NFL cornerback.

Yeah I think he's having serious confidence issues. Which is a bad, bad thing for a corner.
But not jamming Galloway might have been Williams call, since if he jammed Galloway, and Galloway beat the jam, there wasn't a single person back there to stop him.
Not like covering him actually worked, but there honestly should have either been a safety back there (I mean, TB's second wideout is awful...Galloway is a legit NFL receiver, so double him on that blitz!), or the blitz should have gotten there.

I think Rogers would make an excellent Safety. He is also excellent in the flats. He does have a tendency to have trouble with the faster recievers but he is an excellent tackler and is very strong and is quite a hitter. Just the fast recievers that give him trouble. A real aggressive offseason program to improve his speed would pay off big time.
