ESPN Quaterback Rankings

Not that I put much stock in what ESPN has to say, and not that I enjoy adding to the insanity that we call the 'Great Mark Brunell Debate', but they have posted their quarterback rankings, and I thought it was worth a looksee.

26. Mark Brunell Redskins

Another inconsistent day for Brunell and this passing game in an embarrassing loss to Tennessee. He doesn't stretch the field and most of the productive passing plays are short passes that depend on YAC (yards after catch).

Mark is only rated higher than Losman, Young, Kitna, Harrington, Frye and Walter.

As usual, the rest of the football world has figured out Brunell is done before anyone in charge of this team will. How long is Brunell's contract anyway? He ruined '04, he's helping ruin this year - will he still be winging it out of bounds or at the feet of our receivers in '07? '08?

Can't argue with them. Only thing you could argue with is that maybe Young should be a notch higher than Brunell.

The rankings are a good indication that things are not going well for our QB but also are a little bit of an indication that Saunders play calling and some less than adequate line play has not been as effective as we all had expected.

The reality also to be considered is that there are a lot of QBs on this list that would be even worse if they were in Brunell's shoes. He may not be very good but he is IMO certainly a lot better than most of these guys in our offense and with our players.

And he is our starting QB

Oh yeah, 15-17 as a starter. indeed. He certainly gave a :D to Titan fans. I hear he's got strong support among Cowboys and Giants fans as well. We'll know in a few weeks what Eagles fans think of Mark, but I'll bet they jump on the Brunell Bandwagon too. Last time we played them, Mark only gave a taste (9/25(!), 141yrds, 1 TD, 1 INT, 53 QB rating) of what he can do for that team. That's veteran leadership!

You couldn't describe it much better than this....this guy has ruined Gibbs 2nd tenure but its Gibbs own fault if you think about it. He is allowing this to continue....i looked back at the 2004 season and Gibbs waited til the 9th game (which Brunell started as well) to finally pull him when we were 3-5 and down 17-0 to the Bengals at home.....and fans and everyone else was calling for his head for weeks before then and he just wouldnt do it. Even last year, we won those games despite Brunell....how can Gibbs forget about 2004 and how it ruined our year? This guy cannot play anymore! He was finished in 2004. It just shows you how dominant that defense was las year to win despite #8's poor play...how did we beat Tampa in the playoffs?? Its unbelieveable....120 total yards from the offense and Brunell threw for 41 yards and threw that INT with 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter at his own 25 yd line......its insane how awesome that defense was. And it just goes to show that his poor play has been the only thing you can point out for Mr. Brunell since he got here.

How depressing when the only person in the world who can't see it is the head coach. By the way , you think Gibbs watched the tape of that last pass vs Tennessee last week into quintuple coverage? Its unforgiveable throwing that ball and when the opponent is thanking Mark brunell after the game it should probably tell you something. Can someone wake Coach Gibbs up? I cannot believe he is allowing this to happen!

Young may be rated lower but not for long. This guy is a rookie, left college early to go pro and he can hold his own out on the field. He has no place to go but up. Can you say that about Mark Brunell? Hardly.

V. Young just beat Brunell and when the veteran had a chance to drive the team down the field at the end of the game to tie or win what did he do?? He threw into QUINTUPLE coverage on the 1st play of the drive.....5 guys on 1 receiver and he still threw it......if you ask me, Brunell is behind Young since he outplayed and beat Brunell on his home field. Brunell should be #27 , behind Vince.

oh my god...
i just watched the game again.

early in the 2nd half, brunell heaved a deep ball to santana moss, who in all fairness did have maybe a step on his typical double coverage. the ball sailed just high and moss was unable to pull it down. we all knew this.

but as i was playing and rewinding, playing and rewinding, trying to determine if perhaps moss just didn't adjust to the ball well, if maybe he could've caught it (turns out the answer is "not very likely"), i noticed this little white blob at the top of the screen as the pass whizzed through the air...

there was another reciever (james thrash i believe) streaking COMPLETELY UNCOVERED down the middle of the field!!! and i mean, there was literally not a defender within 15 yards of him in ANY direction. first i thought it must be a ref, since he was so far away from anybody else. but nope. it would have been the easiest touchdown in NFL history.

instead, we punt.
brunell just doesn't even look at any other WR 90% of the time.

no question, MB04 is one of the few worst "QBs" in the league.

I'm nautious hearing that story DCD....can you imagine how many times that must happen a game? I know if i dont do my job well i will be replaced. Like i have said before , and i;ll say it again.....it took Gibbs 9 games to pull him in 2004 and remember how bad he had been then? No matter what we or anyone else say, he is not gonna do it. I hope you are right about what will happen at FEDEX if he is still the starter come Week 9....

The only concern I have is that shortly we will need a quality back-up QB! If Brunell gets injured as some here have advocated and are wishing and praying for we will then have Collins. I know a few here do not care and hate Brunell so much that they actually think that Collins is better than Brunell I know that most sane people would hope that when Campbell becomes the starting QB (hopefully soon) we will have Brunell as the back-up. IMO he is a better QB than Collins and I think he will help Campbell a lot. Not many of those guys on the QB rankings are that great either.

This might mean that we will need to provide some security for Brunell if certain fans take matters in their own hands and are unwilling to wait for Gibbs to make a change in a time frame that suits them

Your point of views seems to me to be flawed. He has achieved a poor rating operating with superior receivers. Without the excess yardage from our guys, who are terrific runners after catching short passes, Brunell would probably be on the bottom of the heap. He is a particularly horrible QB for out team, the opposite of a good fit.

nikih and jansen fan posted sentiments DIC-tating that brunell is very effective in scenarios where the QB gets bent over.....I believe that power tools were in play.....

How can such a smart person like Gibbs be soo stupid as to...

#1 Staying with Brunell till death

#2 Making Todd Collins the backup

These two decisions accompanied with the fact we have a FIRST ROUND QUARTERBACK sitting standing and waiting on the bench is unforgivable and Gibbs doesn't see it. He just refuses to see it. Frustration is the word of the hour for Redskins fans.

the play-calling has appeared flawed because the execution has been so poor on brunell's end. if a pass is called and receivers are open and there's adequate protection, it was a good play-call. saunders can't throw the ball himself. don't blame him for not making the play.
