DEAD CAP MONEY AND OUR DEPTH

To my knowledge we have 15 million in dead cap money and LEAD THE NFL in this dubious category for the second straight year. Well look no further on why we have ZERO DEPTH. Anthony Montgomery starting?? c'mon! Golston ok But both? And Boschetti? hes CFL QUALITY! Holdman is a waiver wire scrub. Wright is a scrub and Curry Burns? Jesus, asking these guys to covor people is like asking a blind man to kill a fly. The effort is there BUT THERES NO GOD DAMN CHANCE Its happening
Our defense is injury decimated and with our depth the Scrubs will get exposed..This isnt about coaching, or about these guys being losers, ITS JUST OUR DEPTH ISNT THAT GOOD. its a talent issue..PERIOD...Last year Coles was nine million in dead cap all by himself and this year our good friend LA is 7.8 in dead cap.....Do you realize 8 million in cap space is like 3-4 good players when you get creative deals. Its a shame but these were deals done under spurrier and they are Gibb's cross to bear . I cringe at this week in Indy. Lets hope the NFL gods are good to us..

I agree 100%. I would much rather have a solid blue collar team with only one or two superstars on offense and defense rather than a team where half the guys are overpaid underachievers and the other half are waiver wire league minimum guys.

More like 16.5 + million in dead cap but every team has dead money you point out LA's # and what Coles cost last year, Coles would have cost almost as much if he were on the team and Moss wouldn't be here. LA was going to be a big hit regardless even after giving back 4.5 million. but they are a huge hit once. Look how long TAFKAPT was on the dead cap list. There are about 30 other guys taking up dead space also and about half of them will count against it again next year. It comes with the CBA.

Last year we were over 20 million dead cap space(if my memory serves me right)...and this year 16.3. Coles was the highest paid recievr in the NFL last year THANKS TO US and our stupidity . Im not critizing the fact we got rid of them but its the contracts we initially gave them which is borderline insanity. and your right its the cost of doing buisness ...For the Washington Redskins
Go see how much philly dallas and ny had?...Were at about 36 mill in two years? Go add there totals and see what you get...

like resigning ryan clark and not giving the worst cover safety in the league the most money a safety has ever seen.

The funny thing is, we do have depth,
lots of depth, but only at certain positions. We've got 5 WRs who've all been starters at various points in their careers, and could all start for other teams in this league(and a QB who only throws to one of them), and we're at least 5 deep at RB, so deep that we won't even play Duckett. We've been collecting QBs like party favors too, but our coach is only in love with one of them, so the other two collect $$ holding clipboards. Nice work if you can get it.
So while we've accumulated excessive depth at some positions, we're paper thin at others. Great personnel management there!

I agree.....and this dead cap space is also the reason why we trade our picks because after we go on our Free Agent binge and get our fix like a two dollar junkie in Union Square Were CAPPED out. between the bloated contracts and the insane dead cap we cant afford to sign 7 or 8 picks!
Its a viscious cycle..... I love Gibbs and thru it all its still hard to stay angry with him(even after Brunell, insane signings, and 3and 1 two weeks ago). I just think theres an attitude at Redskin Park "screw the cap we play to win".......And Gibbs has bought into that. and he unfortunately inherited it as well. I just want too see CAMPBELL so i can derive some hope from this season and next as well.

speaking of the cap, i saw next year half the guys will count against us agian. What if BOOnell retires? Do we still have to pay him or is he doneski? If he's done then that would be a pretty penny we will be saving.

This is the ever-growing consequence of the spend-now / pay-later approach of regotiating and back-loading contracts.
A bigger and bigger percentage of the roster is mandated to be low-pay or minimum guys. Which means they start creeping higher and higher on the depth chart.

You can't put this the shoulders of the coaches. The free agent signings, and trading away of future youth of this team fall solely on the shoulders of the guy signing the checks.
In Spurrier's case, he can claim ignorance as he had zero experience running an NFL franchise
As for Gibbs, if memory serves me correctly, didn't he coach before the Salary Cap? So you can't judge him when it comes to these kinds of decisions that are killing the Skins. This a General Manager/Owner shortcoming.

But isn't Gibbs the de facto GM? I thought he was pretty much guiding the personnel department. He may not be drafting contracts, but doesn't he have final say over who goes/who stays/who gets brought in?

by I remember the good
Fact is Gibbs is a heck of a coach but he has serious issues running things from the front office. Holmgren, Shottenheimer couldn't do it and niether can Gibbs. Instead of signing all these coaches he should have hired Bobby Beathered (sorry spelling) Gibbs is spreading himself too thin and the finished product is below everyone's expectations. Gibbs bit off more than he can chew and it is what it is.

I agree that the guy signing the checks bears the brunt of responsiblity, but I have to believe the coaches are heavily involved in the decisions and Gibbs in particular has additional responsibilies.
BTW, your user name is pretty high school, did you come up with that yourself?

I agree but thing is also that draft picks are a great way to get cheap labor. A decent 3rd rounder (coughcougTJDUCKETTTRADEcoughcough) can give the same amount of production as a mid/low-level free agent, at a significantly lower cost.
The not-using-draft-picks thing hurts us on so many levels. Depth is a hard thing to come by in the NFL. Teams can't afford to have high-priced back ups. Many teams rely on solid draft picks to fill in for injuries in a pinch. Look at the Chargers, they're starting a 2nd round pick at
left tackle. Losing your LT is a huge problem but they've at least got a replacement that's playing decently. Why? Good drafting.
If Samuels went down (knock on wood) I don't even want to know who would replace him. journeyman Todd Wade? There's no potential there. If Wade starts it will be a huge problem. The Chargers on the other hand have a young guy in there who could have serious potential.
The difference between depth with cheap free agents and depth through drafting is like night and day to me.

Here are some 2006 Cap Numbers. I love having all these guys on the team, but are we getting what we are paying for?
Brunell $5.4 Million, 2-5 record
Jansen $5.6 Million, how many penalties?
Samuels $6.3 Million, how many penalties?
Wynn $3.0 Million, 6 tackles 0 sacks
Daniels $2.6 Million, 13 tackles 2 sacks
Griffin $2.5 Million, 15 tackles 0 sacks
Rogers $1.9 Million, 0 INT
Patten $1.8 Million, 1 rec 0 TD
