Proud proud day! UPDATED 10/22/2006

Post by NikiH »

There has been a lot of drama circulating around Jackson's flag football league. We had an altercation a few weeks ago when another coach screamed at our children and our coaches jumped in to defend them. The coach who was the agressor is also a police officer and the board of Parks and Rec is taking everything he says as gold, no matter how many of the parents that were there come foward with a differing story. They've unjustly suspended Jackson's coach and one of the assistant coaches. The other assistant coach will not return because he's afraid of the retributions should someone lie about something he does. That leaves only one coach. That coach is Jansenfan. The problem is that NO ONE from Parks and Recreation bothered telling us this until we showed up a few Saturdays for the game. Scott coached 6, 4-7 year olds by himself. They would not allow any of us to help him because we had not taken the coaches clinic.

Well this week we were slated to face the team that the altercation occured with. Scott was an extremely fair and level headed coach and the other coach had been warned not to raise his voice. Scott coached the kids to 14 - 0 score in the first 12 minutes of the game. He went on to win the game 32 to 14. Our children played beautifully. And this was a team that could not practice for the last two weeks because they've not given Scott any help in getting these kids numbers or anything until Thursday.

These kids and their one coach overcame so very much for this win and I couldn't be prouder of any of them.

Wednesday we have our last game and then it's on to the playoffs. I love that our kids have gotten this far regardless of the bumps in the road. They are great children but it took actions by some very wonderful adults to get them through this.

Wow, that's awesome!

Congrats, Scott and Jackson. That really stinks that Parks and Recs won't find Scott any assistants given his situation.

Is he going to have to go through the rest of the year without any help?

That's wonderful! Sounds like some good karma going on. What goes around, comes around.

Please keep us informed. Hearing about Jackson's games puts a smile on the ol' face.

A parent from another team that is certified to coach started helping today, and the Parks and Rec also gave us the league's head referee, who took care of the kid on the bench (there are 6 players on the field and we had 7 show up today).

I decided that I wanted to coach the team to have fun. I tried to make sure everyone got a chance to touch the ball (although I forgot one kid today. :smack: ). Our defensive scheme worked wonders today, and that was the key to the game. We scored on our first possession, then forced a three and out. We scored on our second possession and then intercepted the ball in the end zone on our opponents next possession. We hadn't really even been competitive against this team earlier in the year, so everyone was surprised, including us.

Having fun is the most important thing to me. These kids should be learning the basic fundamentals of the game, and the older ones should learn a little bit of strategy. The score is really irrelevent. That being said, it felt good to win against this particular team, although I didn't show it until we were safely in the car, and away from the players.

Humility from JansenFan... what a surprise.

As someone who knows all that went on with the situation... niki's right, you should be proud. With all you have going on, to even agree to do the job was exemplary, to beat the jerk that started the problem for veryone involved, had to be very satisfying indeed.

And to be able to subsequently teach the kids that just going out there and having fun will win you some games as well... that's what it should be all about at that level.

Good for you brother, congratulations.

I'm glad they got you some help as well.

Yesterday was the first playoff game for Jackson's flag football team. It was a huge challenge. The only team in the league that these kids have not beat. Again only 6 kids show up and they have to play the entire game, no breaks with the exception of half time. They were all amazing. They let one guy slip, although technically the didn't. They pulled the flag of the kid handing off the ball but for some reason the refs didn't see it. They let the running back past them because they thought they got the guy and he ran in for a touch down. They stopped the extra point (which is run in, in flag football). The rest of the game they played awesome defense but couldn't get much going on offense. With 1:10 left in the game, one of kids intercepted the ball at about the 25 yard line. The play stops on an interception but the team intercepting keeps possession of the ball. This was apparently the spark the kids needed. Jackson lined up at QB and was supposed to hand the ball off to a little boy named Jacob who was to hand to another kid named Jakob. Well they got confused and the first Jacob was lined up in the WR position so he went out for a pass. Jackson recognized that the play was broken the second he got the ball, located Jacob down field and passed the ball right in the pocket in front of Jacob where no defenders were. Jacob ran to catch the ball and ran it in for a touchdown. Time expired but league rules say we have the opportunity to go for the extra point even if time expires. This was the game. The kids lined up and Jakob passed again to Jacob because he was the only one open and he took 2 steps into the end zone.

Our kids won! They are going to the championship game. The only worry that I have is that we are facing the guy who cannot keep from screaming. The last time we played them they had instructed the coach that he was to be on his best behavior and the kids were not intimidated and they actually won. If he can keep his mouth shut I am positive our kids have what they need to beat them. We practice on Wednesday and I think we should have one of the parents act his part to show our kids that they can do it with him yelling as well. Wish the little guys luck. I will let you know how it turns out.

Again I'm proud of my little QB and of my husband. Without the two of them and the other 5 kids facing all of this adversity they never would have even been able to play. They will all be told when we have our end of the season party how proud we are that none of them let anything hold them back. Parks and Rec took away our coaches, would never allow us to replace them with other parents, would not answer our requests to add more players to help these kids and they overcame ALL of that. Parks and Rec was in shock that it was this rag tag team that is going to the championship game. Imagine how they're going to feel when they surprise them one more time! ;-)

Awesome! That game sounded like a lot of college games yesterday involving late comebacks.

Yeah, its never good when the front end of a double reverse goes out in a pattern, unless your QB has good awareness, make an excellent read and a perfect pass. Then the receiver makes a great break on the ball (as Santana would say, he attacked the ball) makes a great move and has nothing but open field to beat. The receiver was the same kid who made the game-winning 45 yard run at the end of regulation in last season's super bowl.

I'm proud of our kids. We are going into this super bowl riding a 3 game winning streak, and our defense has given up 6 points in the last two games. Will we win? Who knows. It sure has been fun these last few weeks, though.

Not to start any controversies at QB or anything - but after Jackson finishes his current season can he come over and help the skins out

We need to come up with some Madden-style ratings for Jackson. High awareness is a must. . .

The screamer might be persuaded to go on his best behaviour or not show up for the game. This actually can be arranged, you know.

Good luck.

Actually at practice Wednesday. I told them that adults yell when they have to fart, so if he's yelling, he's really trying not to fart. Now hopefully they will laugh when he yells and stay loose.

Well, our luck ran out today. There were a few things I had a problem with, but I'll leave them alone because I don't want to take anything away from our kids.

To quote Joe Gibbs, they played their guts out today. While the results were not that close, we played them tough. I was the only coach again, and this time I wasn't able to do enough to win the championship.

That being said, all of these kids are champions in my book. They looked adversity in the face and laughed at it. These kids learned that if they played hard and played smart, they could overcome just about anything that came there way.

Oh, and everytime dipstick screamed, our kids wouold laugh. I guess that was a good idea at least.
