Instead of "upgrading" at safety in the offseason, in hindsight it would have been much better if we had gone after another cover CB. Or another guy on the front four who can help pressure the QB. Our defense is weak because we cannot pressure the QB without blitzing, but we cannot blitz because we cannot cover. It is nice to have two hard-hitting safeties, but the other weakenesses in the defense right now mean that we cannot really take advantage of them. I would like to see Springs back, but only when he is healed up and ready to play.

Good points here. How on earth does a guy like Mike Rumph end up as our starting corner along with Kenny Wright? Those guys not only can't cover, they can't blitz either. Last week I posted that we might as well have Rumph blitzing because he can't cover, and today I saw why Williams won't blitz him either.
One of the problems we have with a personnel philosophy dedicated to buying talent is that we seem to have lost the ability to evaluate quality talent. thus when a guy like Springs goes down, all we've got are replacements that basically are other teams' rejects.
Hard to see how we can be a Super Bowl team when we're starting players that can't even make the worst teams in the league.

One other thing about the coverage. Our corners have sucked in coverage, but our linebackers haven't exactly dont much better covering rb's and te's, or receivers when we sit in zones. For example, against the Jags Holdman gave up completions of 7, 23, 23 and 13 yards. Marshall wasn't much better, getting beaten for 33 and 51. Today it was much the same. I wouldn't mind seeing Rocky in for Holdman, and after a good season last year Lemar is being exposed somewhat this season. Throw in the lack of pressure and this is what you get. Wouldn't it be nice to still have Smoot right about now?

To be fair, the 51 yard TD Marshall "gave" up, was to a RB he had no business covering. Jones-Drew is sick fast, kinda like Bryan Westbrook, and no MLB should ever be covering either one of those two in single man coverage.

Not really. I loved Smoot as a Redskin, but he isn't worth the kind of money he wanted. He got torched by numerous WRs (like Mushin Muhammed when we played Carolina a few years ago). He played hard, was tough as nails, but wasn't anywhere near to being shutdown corner, which is how he's paid.
I'm seeing a few problems here. One is schematic; Williams has our corners playing 10 yards off the WRs, which means anything short is an instant completion. Second, we are missing a LOT of tackles. One thing I was absolutely impressed with Williams is he transformed our defense in the past two years to a good-tackling one. Not this year. This year, we're arm tackling, and missing a lot of tackles. Unacceptable.

Can't make chicken salad out of chicken......well, you know. Springs would not have made a difference thus far. When your offense is listless, you can only hold a team but for so long on defense. Face it, we are the worse team in the division and I've been ready for Brunell to get benched or retire. Make the move now and THROW THE BALL DOWNFIELD!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's because our corners are too slow to play them any other way. It's the main reason why I didn't want us to draft Rogers. He can't cover a top receiver without giving up the cushion because he'll get burned just about every time. It's nice having a corner that can tackle (theoretically bc Rogers hasnt been tackling lately) but first and foremost he needs to be able to cover. Rumph is slow for a cb also. As for Wright there is no need to even talk about him. He just flat out sucks.

And Lloyd, Carter, and AA are worth the money that they are getting? We all know that this team knows how to deal with the cap and I would think that they would've been able to come up with cap-friendly deals for Smoot and Pierce. And no Smoot isn't a #1 corner, but I think that he is a very good #2 guy as he proved when he was here. He is better than anybody that we have now (except for Springs). Smoot was quick, played hard, and eventhough he was frequently banged up he always played through injuries.
Btw....Ryan Clark just blew up Tomlinson. I really wish that we still had him here.

I think you need to give them more than 5 games to determine if they're a bust or not. Very rarely does a player come in as a free agent and
immediately make a difference.

I
really wish we had Pierce. Marshall is a fine LB, but Pierce is outstanding.
And no, I don't think Smoot is a very fine #2. He's a good one, but he's paid like a very good #1. He's paid like a ProBowl corner.

We are a third of the way through the season, how much time should we give them? Randle El has made plays. I'm not saying that they need to playing amazing football right away, but all 3 of them suck right now. Lloyd had more penalties than catches today. Carter, once again, was nowhere to be seen.

Pittsburgh didn't need 5 games to figure out they love Ryan Clark... dude's been a great pick-up for them... anyone see him knock-out Chad last week? I think it was the number one jack in front of Sean Taylors helmet jarring jack...

He blew up Tomlinson yesterday.

Springs will be back when healthy. Until then, please stop crying about him not being out there. Whoever we put out there needs to step up. If they can't then Williams will need to come up with something else. Springs will help, but is that really the teams biggest problem???

I don't think this is the teams biggest problem. We desperately need a passrush. Springs will not be an answer if we are rushing the quarterback like we are currently. I'm talking about our front four. They need to step up.

While that would be nice, I just don't really think that they are capable of it. IMO Griffin is the only starting caliber player on that line. Daniels is solid against the run but he can't rush the passer at all. He had a huge game against Dallas last year, but for him to be really effective I think he needs to be playing on a line with a pass rushing de on the other side. Golston/Salavae are nice complementary players that probably shouldn't be full time starters. Salavae is big and plugs the middle, but as with Daniels, he is a liability if there is no one playing around him that can get to the qb. Carter is garbage. It's becomming pretty clear that the 49ers had the right idea of playing him as a linebacker in a 3-4 defense. It seems like on every single play he is being manhandled by opposing lineman. Even worse, it looks like te's are having no problem blocking him either. Wouldn't it have been nice if we had drafted Merriman last year instead of the innefective Carlos Rogers.

YES, it is. Whats made Williams' defense so special the last 3 seasons is the fact that he had a shut down corner so he could disguise a veriety of blitzes to confuse other teams. We need him back BAAAAAD.
I thought that he would be back for Tenn. but a fellow hog believes he'll be out longer than the staff is making it seem.

A year. I'd give them a year. I mean Marcus Washington is a hell of a good player for us, and it took him about half of 2004 to really hit his stride.

Yea but it didn't take him a year to stop sucking. He was solid from Day 1. Took him a little while to really get comfortable and be dominant, but he never sucked the wway AA, Lloyd, and Carter do.
