Poor Marty is taking some serious heat down in So. Cal over the way he called the Chargers vs Raisens game. Even though it's only one loss, so I kind of disagree with the Chargers fans "Sky is falling" theme, I do see how he would get himself into this type of predicament. Even though, at the time, I think he shouldn't have been canned because of the way he started to turn it around, I used to hate the way the Redskins would lose games that year. It's the same in San Diego right now, and they're losing games because Schottenheimer is being way too conservative. It's one thing to start out conservative, and then gradually open it up a bit, but he's been doing the same thing all of his coaching career without any indication that he's willing to move forward and open up the offense.

I guess in the Ravens game he called an ultra conservative second half with only a six point lead. Philip Rivers only threw a couple of passes in the entire second half, and Schott seemed to be content on giving it back to the Ravens and have the Chargers D win the game. But, he was faced with like 3rd and 8 or 3rd and 12, and he still ran LT right up the middle on EVER single possesion. Now, he's taking a lot of flak over it and people are saying he's a goner after this season unless the Chargers go to the Super Bowl.

I feel bad for Schott, he's won a lot of games but he's never going to be able to get over the hump if he's that conservative. I think there's a difference between trying to establish the run in order to open it up for the passing game and trying to establish the run and living AND dying by it without ever trying to open up the passing game. I guess Schott doesn't have a lot of faith in Philip Rivers to air it out. I don't understand, surely Schottenheimer would have some say in who he wanted at QB, and if so, why did they let Brees go? I bet he regrets taking on that job without being given some of the GM duties as well, like he had in DC.

I really feel bad for him, but I can't say that I entirely disagree with all the flak that he's been getting.

Doesn't he have the record for the highest number of wins for a coach who's never appeared in the Super Bowl? That does make you wonder . . .

Marty said that people are complaining about the style of play, but that he has been coaching a long time and has "never gotten any style points." (His words.) What ran through my head was "my thoughts exactly, Marty."

Not a bad plan if you win but you are going to be second guessed if you lose OR if you have a rep of being too conservative. Marty ball is not going to get you too many wins, some but not enough! - may be a sound football plan but it is probably going to cost him his job again.

why would you feel bad for marty? he is a sack of garbage. he is a horrible, horrible football coach. he is a giant coward and he wouldn't know good football if it bit him in the balls. i was stymied by the fact that he had ANY reputation left at all after his year in washington. he left no question that he is a giant moron.

i had a boss EXACTLY like him once. he walked around with the same idiotic expression on his face, and thought he was pretty important and knew what he was doing. in reality, he was such a screw-up my colleague and i had to stay late after work every day and re-do all his planning for the next day, to avoid the screw-ups that were making all of us look bad every day.

there is no doubt this is exactly what goes on with Schittenheimer. case in point: jimmy raye, redskins offensive coordinator 2001, author of the "Blindfolded Monkey Throwing Darts at a Playbook" playcalling system. the playcalling was the worst in the history of the NFL, yet marty defended this collosal piece of crap and wanted to retain him for next year (which is part of what got him fired).

then he goes onto SD and gets lucky with a better OC who takes them to the playoffs, he has a chance to finally win a playoff game, and marty overrules him, goes into "Choking Coward" mode, and loses the game for his team. this is utterly shameful.

he is a pathetic icon of the american "boss" who makes a career of taking credit for other people's work despite the fact that all he does is make that work much more difficult.

Sorry, dcd, after reading this paragraph. . .I simply stopped. Don't know if the rest of your post had something to do with trying to support these claims, but I can't see how any of this had substance.

But I think I'm getting the main thrust of your argument: You love Schotty.

Man, you really finished that one off with a thump!! Moron? With all the hate you were throwin at him, I thought you'd have closed it out with something better than "moron".

Schottenheimer, while I don't personally agree with how he coaches, is a respected Head Coach who has won plenty of NFL games in his career and as such, deserving of at least some kind of positive reputation as far as head coaches go. There are a lot worse head coaches in the league, put it that way. Yes, Marty's system is conservative and open for criticism, but your post is more of a personal attack on him as opposed to having anything to do with football.

Give us facts and figures instead of "moron" that will support your arguement that he doesn't deserve a respected reputation in the NFL. And, just because he didn't win with the Redskins doesn't make him a moron.

Like I said, I don't like Schottenheimers style of football at all!!! But, to be surprised that he has a well respected reputation around the league? Even if you don't like his style of football, you can't overlook the fact that he's won a lot of games in the NFL, and probably more so than he's lost. That, in and of itself, commands some kind of respect. Granted, he never won the big one, and I don't think he ever will, but he's a Head Coach and he's BEEN a Head Coach for a long time. I'm sure there's a reason why!

I liked Schott when he was here - and, if you remember it was Lavar who turned that season around with the interception returned for a TD versus the Panthers.
