Joe Gibbs press conference

ugh, just as we all knew, he is defending brunell, and basically suggesting that it was everyone's fault but his. everyone else has gotten some sort of criticism EXCEPT BRUNELL, which is beyond insane.

he said "well i think the QB sort of reflects everything else that's going on in the offense"... sure, but last night it was CLEARLY the other way around. if i were one of the other offensive players i would go through the roof, he is insulting and degrading them.

he says we just need to keep working and hopefully we'll find a groove and get rolling.

WELCOME TO 2004!!!

he also said he thought the transition into this offense would've been fairly easy, they use the same numbering system, and have been sort of blending the two together to make it easier to transition.

special teams was a lot better, punting, kick coverage...

went over all the penalties on film with the players (if i heard that correctly)...

thinks the o-line is one of the strengths of the team, blamed poor pass protection on TEs/RBs/etcs

the cowboys were playing the safetys deep, taking away the outside WRs...

In defense of 2004, we were 1-1 after the second week then, and Brunell had done something he hasn't done yet this year - throw a TD pass.

there is hope though, i think! someone at the end finally asked basically, do you think brunell can still make all the throws? and gibbs wavered for a bit... he said something to the effect of "well, just like with everything else i've mentioned, that'll be something that we'll look at... at this point in his career it's something he's always going to have to work against..." not at all an exact quotation but the best i can remember it...

he did of course come back to defending him, saying "of course at the end of the game he made some really good throws and you have to think he's still quite capable" or something. but of course he and we all know that that was due completely to the type of defense the 'boys were playing at the end of the game, concentrating ONLY on preventing the deep bomb, letting us get whatever we wanted over the middle since we wouldn't have enough time to drive 3 times.

Your right! I was extremely dissapointed in our press corp for not asking Gibbs "how do you feel about your Quarterback?" with the first question instead it was like the 20th question and in turn gets treated by Joe as insignificant. And anyone could've predicted Joe's response...it's always " I think the QB is a reflection..." well I think the QB is an old fart w/no poise. And it's not that MB doesn't have the arm to do it, he just goes into his shell until the game is out of reach, if he gets any pressure he puts his head down and it's done. If we lose to houston maybe Joe would start to see light but probably not, I think it's gonna take us being out of the playoffs for consideration to occur, and that breaks my heart, also I think Gibbs feels like when Mark's done then the Joe Gibbs second coming is done, which is a travesty in its self.

REDSKINS FANS LET'S NOT WAIST ANY MORE PRECIOUS JOE GIBBS COACHED FOOTBALL GAMES ON MARK BRUNELL. I HAVE PERSONALLY EMAILED REDSKINS.COM and ASKED THEM TO PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AT JASON CAMPBELL AS THE STARTING QUARTERBACK, if 99 of you do the same THAT WILL BE CONSIDERED SIGNIFICANT RESPONSE AND WOULD MERIT JOE GIBBS' at least being informed. UNITE W/ME AND LET'S MAKE OUR VOICE HEARD BOONELL OUT CAMPBELL IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I watched the press conference. And I'm baffled by Gibbs approach. You would've thought Mark was the victim of our O-Line's ineptness.

All of us can see that Mark is not good right now.

It's Coach Gibbs' team. And if he wants to play Mark every down this year. That's fine. He know better than any of us what needs to happen. But at least make it make more sense.

It's not pass protection or the recievers, Mark isn't getting them the ball. Period. Madden said that he was holding the ball too long last night, and pointed out that at 6'1'' he can't throw over the middle. Why can't Gibbs say that, and follow it up with his reasoning for sticking with Mark?

I think it's too early in the season to pull Mark under any circumstances. Week 5, that's different. But come on, Coach! Mark is the weak link in the chain right now.

ROTFALMAO

Where do you people come up with this stuff... it's hysterical.

Personally I think you'd be a lot more effective if you went and danced around Redskin Park's parking lot with nothing on but a Redskins scarf singing hallelujah... especially if you got 99 others to join you.

Then, THAT WILL BE CONSIDERED SIGNIFICANT RESPONSE AND WOULD MERIT JOE GIBBS' at least being informed'

No. I think that all of the coaches feel that he gives us the best chance to win. I am going to have faith. If it takes us this year to win the superbowl next year I am all for it.

Do not fire Gibbs. My whole point is we are waisting a great coaching staff and a great team on a smitty quarterback, and if I have to dance naked in front of Redskins Park to get MB out of the lineup so we can win games, then call me the streak.

Actually I belive it's us(the fans). See Gibbs came and we broke even and everone screamed "get rid of Brunell." Then when the team has a second year under the same offense and defense we make it to the Playoffs. Now here is where we come in see...we figured get a few more weapons and we are a shoe in for the SB however Gibbs threw in a monkey wrench see he brought in Saunders and his high powered offense and WE ALL said SB here we come. We never imagined we would have to endure a starting of a new offense all over again which usually takes 3 yrs to know well not counting a 700 page playbook. See our expectations were to high. Everyone is ready to shout out but if we were terrible last year our expectation would be lower or if we had started a whole new coach and offense...oh waite we did do that.

Gibbs gave no hint he would go to Ramsey in the first game last year until he did. He's going to support Brunell until he actually pulls him, not just until he thinks of pulling him. What could be dumber than saying "Brunell sucks and seems to be washed up, but I'm going to let him play until I can't stand it any more. If by some miracle he doesn't suck I'll keep him in, else he's gone."

Would that not pretty much kill any chance at all of Brunell playing well?

OK, I'm not holding my breath anyway, but that's not my point.

From the news conference - I have cut some out but you can find this on the site page!
Head coach Joe Gibbs said on Monday that he had expected an easier transition to the new offense employed by associate head coach-offense Al Saunders.

Gibbs hired Saunders last offseason to take the reins of his offense and call plays.

"What we tried to do was blend the two offenses together," Gibbs said. "With Al's offense, there's more volume. But for me personally, I thought it would be a fairly easy transition in the way we call things."

Was it information overload for some players?

"That's probably one of the things you could say," Gibbs said. "All of us inside don't feel that way, though. You would hope that given all the work we all put into this, both players and coaches, that we would find a solution."

Gibbs pointed to pass protection breakdowns and an inconsistent rushing attack as culprits as well.

Improving the ground game will be a focus in upcoming games, he said.

...Ladell Betts and T.J. Duckett combined for 64 yards on 16 carries against the Cowboys. That's not enough rushing attempts in a game, Gibbs said.

"We're not getting enough plays, because we're not converting enough third downs," he explained. "So we don't have the opportunities to keep going and continuing to run. We need to be rushing 30-35 times per game."

The loss of Clinton Portis, who is recuperating from a shoulder injury, has also had an impact.

Meantime, pass protection units have struggled to protect Brunell, especially in the Dallas game when they yielded six sacks.

Gibbs said the offensive line continues to be one of the team's strengths, but there may have been some breakdowns in other areas of pass protection.

"The thing you have to understand in the passing game is that it's not just those five guys, it's everybody who goes along with it," he said. "It's the receivers blocking, it's picking up blitzes, it's the backs blocking, and the tight ends blocking."

This seems to address some of the issues and concerns that we have had and these do not seem like excuses to me but areas that will be improved on.

By the way anyone who thinks that the "new" offense is all as complicated as we have been made to think by the BS media needs to read the article from a VA paper that was here at THN recently and "reveals" that it is indeed a lot simpler than we all were led to believe! This is typical media hype!

In my opinion Brunell has not played very well but that is not the only reason our record is 0 - 2. We have not played well as a team - Gibbs has the coaches and the players IMO to get this right and while Brunell may not be playing as our starter for much longer, the team has to improve in certain areas before Gibbs will pass the job on to Campbell.

I just do not get the bickering by the fans! The qestioning is one thing but thinking that we might be better off with a different player or coach just does not make any sense to me. These are very skilled athletes and coaches. We are all Redskins fans and these guys deserve our support. That is unless you think that they are not trying their best to do what is expected of them. That is your opinion and I'm just as entitled to mine.
