On Cold Pizza this morning, several people have said that Al Saunders is a great play caller and knows how to run an offense, based on past history. They also said that he really should be a head coach in this league and will be one day.

So here's the question. If and when Gibbs steps down, who would you rather have as our head coach, Al Saunders or Gregg Williams?

Gregg Williams. I really like his attitude and the last thing the defense needs is another defensive system.

Gregg Williams has been here longer and I think defense wins, so I'd like for it to be him.

Still, our future is in good hands, because it's going to be one of those guys.

As an aside though, I wish Joe Gibbs hadn't given up playcalling. Al Saunders is great, but his system takes a lot of getting used to. Is his system something that we'll hold on to after he leaves? Will Campbell be forced to learn yet another offense (which is why the Redskins drafted him, because of his ability to do this.)

Depends on who wants it and who is willing to remain an assistant. I personally think that Sanders is a happy "mad scientist" creating his plays and is probably not the best candidate for HC.

The problem that we are faced with now is that our defense is leaking oil and it's not giving the new sportscar of an offense a chance to get broken in. Our defense needs to hold up and be "staunch" like they were last year to give this offense a chance to gel because once it does, it will be pretty good and score points. I think that GW is being tested now to really if he and his staff are good enough to motivate these guys and come up with schemes that can stop teams. If he is relying on one guy (Springs) to determine whether or not you can blitz, it's pretty sad....

Saunders. Williams sucked as a HC in Buffalo.

Based on the game on Monday night, I would have to say Saunders. Williams' team was all over the place and was not together at all. Saunders' team was at least togeher and worked well. If that is the way that they run their sides of the team how can we expect them to run the whole team.

Williams all the way. Williams's has been a loyal Redskin turning down head coaching jobs to stay with the Skins and has been positive all the way about supporting Gibbs.

Why would we trade that for Saunders who is here because he's in a snit over KC? I"m not dissing him and I'm glad we have him, but we pick him and Williams is gone.

But in a choice? It has to be Williams.

Good point. And people forget, Saunders was the head for several years at San Diego, but never made the playoffs there, so how is he better than Williams as a HC? Few head coaches are great right off the bat.

Edit: Just to be clear, I don't think either Williams' or Saunders' prior experiences as HC should be held against them, and they've both established that they well deserve another shot as a HC.

I agree - I'd go with Williams. But then, I believe a HC should have complete freedom to build his staff, so keeping Al would strictly be Gregg's call.

Neither one of them, Go out and get a young, new coach with fresh attitudes and understands the new style of the game, however Keep Joe as long as he wants to stay.

Al Sanders, my friends in Buffalo said that Williams can't deal with players and is soley an X's and O guy (coordinator), he showed that here with Arrington that he can't deal with players and in Buffalo. But thats only if I had to choose, I would ideally want a young assistant.

How does/when did the Arrington scenario (sounds like a mililatry contigency plan) become Williams' fault?

Were your friends on the team because i've heard nothing but praise from all the skins defensive players, and how much they love playing for him.

And if he couldn't deal with players in the past, why do so many of his former players and coaches want to be with him now? Cuz he treats them bad?

I think comparing the Buffalo situation is similar to the Cleveland situation with Belichek. You had two cities (Buffalo and Cleveland) that are and were two franchises along ways from respectability. Then you compare the next BIG stops for them Belichek in NE (scratch the Jets job) where he joined Parcells and then took over, and Williams in DC where he may take over for a legend in Gibbs. To compare the Bills to the Skins is just not apples to apples.

He has been here the longest, besides Gibbs, he has had the most production out of his unit (Defense), and if it is him, it gives the players a sense of conitnuity because He is returning, not some brand new fresh off the boat coach trying to prove himself in this league.

I think Kornheiser and (begrudgingly) Theismann said it best on Monday Night. Gibbs will slowly become more like Bobby Bowden at FSU. More of a figurehead and a decider in personnel.

I think we should encourage Gibbs to stay on for a long time, because as long as we have him, Skins fans believe in the team infinitely more so than before.

And with Williams and Saunders forming the other two parts of the Triumvirate, that's a scary-good scenario for us Hogs.
