Our Defense let us down...

We knew it would take 4-5 weeks for our Offense to show up. We didn't anticipate that the Defense would take a vacation. Maybe its just that Springs is out, but wow, Johnson looked like Tom Brady back there. I think I even caught him reading the paper on a couple of those passes while waiting for the play to develop.

Goodness dude, they only scored 16 points. How many points do you expect this defense to hold teams to every week...? Especially with our offense not eating time up and letting the guys catch their breath.
They held that team to a beatable score, our offense and kicker failed to take advantage.

I don't quite understand why people are so surprised with the play of our defense. We had trouble getting pressure on the qb last season and I dont think that Carter is good enough to make that much of a difference. Archuletta sucked during the preseason and he still sucks. The coaches didn't address cb depth during the offseason and that came back to bite us today. You can complain all you want about the defense but its really the offense and special teams that couldn't get it done. 16 points against the Vikings at home is freakin PATHETIC.

Big plans, big time offseason moves and the same ole 16 flipping points.
The defense hasn't played well all preseason, and they couldn't stop the run tonight.
I'm confused as to how much money the Redskins are going to spend on recievers only to throw the ball out of bounds.
Kicking? What Kicking? Kicking off to the 15 yard line???? High school ball.

Hmm...the game I watched at the Minnesota offense scored 19 points. Worse, they were 9 of 17 on 3rd down conversions - most of which were 3rd and 10 type range.
Again though, the offense just doesn't have the playbook down. If we can't stop the other team from a 6-7 minute, time crunching 4th quarter drive that eats up the clock when the game is close, we're in trouble. The defense has to be on the better end of their play last year for us to do good early. Instead, coupled with our oh so special teams, we've really put pressure now on the offense to get up to speed.

I agree, 16 points is nothing, our offense is the problem. To me if the defense holds every team to a max of 21 points per game, that's maximum, not average. Then our offense should be able to put 28 points or more on the board, that's only a touchdown per quarter. Other than the O line our kicker(s) both suck, we can't make field goals and kick it deep on kickoffs, their average starting position on kick offs was their 30-40 yard line, that's 10-20 yards more than it should ever be.

The defense was in the top 10 last year. It was hardly problematic and in need of massive upgrades. That said, Carter didn't really give us the boost (yet) on the pass rush. And yeah, we really REALLY missed Springs.

yes they held them to 19 points...BUT NO WAY THEY SHOULD HAVE HAD THAT MANY!! no pass rush, no secondary play. johnson picked them apart and the left side of their o-line THREW our guys around!!! mcintosh better play soon because holdman is junk!!
i'm also starting the ANDRE CARTER stinks bandwagon. DId anyne else see him out there? no?? CAUSE HE DID NOTHING!!!! watch that game over again and watch how slow he is coming off the ball!!!! those big feet of his are weighing him down!!!!!!!! ugh... when will they ever have a pass rush again??!!

The defense couldn't stop them on 3rd down. And I think that's where we failed. Because if weak-ass armed Brad Johnson could complete 3rd down passes on us at will, to a bunch of seriously *sh$t* receivers, we're in trouble. We're facing better receivers and better quarterbacks all year long.

We missed the field goal, they didn't. Wrong team, CLL

This is my feeling too. I don't think we were watching one of the best offenses out there lighting us up. And truly, it was almost more Minnesota's penalties that stopped their drives, not our defense. But who knows, perhaps Minnesota's offense will prove to be top 5 in the league or something.

I actually liked Kornheiser a lot. And I think the team is starting to gell more. Overall, I thought they did a good job.

Our defense got punched in the mouth - Overpowered. Yes, that's a BAD thing. That disgusted me. Give credit to Minnesota, they had a good game plan.
Conversely, our running game was all about finnese. That disgusted me even more. I'd rather see Gibbs calling the plays again if that's what it takes for us to mash people. Remember, we hardly won any games last year when we didn't lean on Portis for the ground game. Also consider that we only have >2< Tight Ends on the roster and neither of them are bruisers. No, sorry, but Sellers is just a fullback.

We definatetly didn't run the ball enough. We didnt allow our defense to rest and we went 3&out entirely too much.

Well, on the runs we did make, we just weren't productive. Betts, while decent between the tackles, clearly doesn't have the speed to do outside running. And the O-line pretty much acted like a speed bump today, both in pass blocking and in run blocking (like the play where they tackled Brunell prior to the handoff). They certainly didn't aid the running on all but a few plays.

Hmm.....Wasn't that the problem as well last year? "New" offense, same old result. Maybe it's not the offense that's the problem, but the players. Oline was a problem last year and is still a problem this year. That group makes entirely too much money to be playing like this. As usual Moss and Portis were the only ones to make plays. Where was Lloyd?

ey? Duckett? Betts ran hard but he clearly doesn't have the necessary talent to carry the load.

I'd rather see a combo of Portis and Duckett that Portis and Betts. They've got to get that guy ready. A blocking Tight End would be nice. OR heck, throw a lineman out there.

If our linemen actually blocked we wouldn't need a blocking tight end.

yes you can, and I will agree. I loved it when he was talking about giraffes and Joey T just ignored him and kept talking football.
I usually like Tony on PTI, but tonight he was a joke.

Bro, I'm sure your pissed, but think about what you just said...
Without question our defense is the anchor of our team.
And sadly our Defense is somewhat prone to giving up the big play every now and then, but hey, if you can hold a team to 19 Points a game, that puts you in a hell of a postion to win the game.
However, today their defense held us to 16.

I would like to see time of possesion stats, it doesn't matter if they don't give up points but if the offense moves the ball and keeps the clock running that tires out the D and big plays happen at the end of the game, just like this one.

And when our offense can't get anything done and keeps putting our D on the field they get tired that way also.

dude, our defense was PATHETIC. the ONLY thing they did well was stop the run, which didn't matter because they gave up a 1st down conversion on 3rd and long almost every time after stopping the run. there was no pressure on the QB, no pass coverage whatsoever. the points mean nothing. minny stopped themselves FAR more often than we stopped them (penalties, dropped balls, etc). if the defense plays like that all year we will be lucky to go 7-9. VERY lucky.
it was an absolutely atrocious, embarassing performance. if you disagree, go ahead and ask gregg williams what he thought. he probably wouldn't answer though, he'd be too busy puking.

i'm sorry, but i don't think that's an excuse here. the defense was horrible from the very first drive of the game all the way through.
