Hognostications 2006 - Official Announcement

Hello THNers, I know quite a few of you have been waiting anxiously for the new Hognostications section, and it's finally here. Last year we started the Hognostications with THN staff member Texas Hog making his picks every week and adding a comedic two cents for every matchup.

We thought it'd be a good idea for the THN community to participate and make their picks and go up against our 'expert'. Thanks to the hard work of RedskinInCanada, we ran a year long pool on the board and more and more people jumped in each week. Ironically in the end, RedskinInCanada won the pool that he had so earnestly upkept himself. By the end of the season, people were pretty into it. So we decided to turn what started out as a THN article into an entire feature section of the website.

To improve the community's experience, we have taken the pool online. This year, pollmeisters will be able to just visit the website, go to the Hognostications section, check out Texas Hog's picks and his comments on each game. As the winner of last year's pool, RedskinInCanada will also post his picks and comments for most week's Hognostications article. This page will also contain links to the previous Hognostications articles, as well as the 'experts' records, and the top performers in the Hognostications pool.

The second element of the section is of course the pool itself. While you're on the Hognostications page, you can just click on any of several links or buttons to go to various pages of the pool. That's right I said pages. The new Hognostications pool section contains all kinds of goodies for THN Hognosticators.

Main Page
Contains such goodies as the schedule for making your picks by, the pool rules, and some links to the various other goodies in the pool.

Online Picksheet
There is a new online picksheet where poolmeisters can just go and make their picks on a web form (with handy drop down boxes). The picksheet even has a couple of what I call 'panic' buttons. Pressed for time sometimes? Don't let a week go by where you go '0 for' because you didn't make your picks. Hit the picksheet, and hit a panic button. There are three to choose from... choose all home teams, choose all away teams, and make random picks. I think they're all pretty self-explanatory, but know that they're there and that they can keep you in th season long pool by getting more than absolutely zero wins.

Pool registration
Odd place for me to put this information? The pool registration is here because all you technically have to do to register for the pool is visit the picksheet page, and in the drop down menu provided for you to pick your username, just click on the add new player option, enter your username, and enter your e-mail address.

I say 'technically' because we want you to also confirm your initial registration in the message board thread that we have created here. This will allow us to make sure that we have received the e-mail of your initial pool picks. Obviously every week thereafter, you will just be able to choose your username from the drop down box and then make your picks. Please also notice that I said use your board username when you register. This will save us from having you give us further information as we can get it from your forum profile.

Other Pool Pages:

This Week's Selections - For the most part, the picking schedule requires that you make your picks a day and a half before the start of that week's games. That gives us a day to enter your picks, and create the 'this week's selections' page. Here you can find out what everybody in the pool picked that week. It's a good place to visit each week to MAKE SURE THAT YOU'RE PICKS ARE THERE. We will not be responsible for 'lost' or unreceived picks. Confirm that your picks are in, or email us about it at feedback@thehogs.net.

Weekly Standings - This page shows how everybody fared in the latest week's picks and of course has some stats like wins and losses etc.

Season Standings - Same as the above but the standings are for the season-to-date. We'll have a special prize for the winner, but more on that later.

Pool Concensus - Some stats on how the pool as a group is hognosticating

Pool History - past weekly results

Player Stat Packs - find any players weekly and seasonal results

And then there are some NFL oriented pages to help you make your picks more easily... these pages should be updated within 24 hours of the close of all that week's games...

Weekly Results - Here you can find the scores of the latest NFL games

Weekly Matchups - some stats for each game of the upcoming week of matchups

League Standings - pretty self-explanatory; divisional listing of the entire NFL standings

NFL Interrogator - grabs any teams' results, so of course at THN that means Redskin games scores for every game back to 1995.

That's the various pages in a nutshell. I will also post a link to this post on the Hognostications page to serve as a reference.

There's much more to go over, but we can do that over the next few days in this thread. For now, we just wanted to let people start registering and getting their picks in. This whole pool hinges on the software we're using working effectively and the only real way to test it fully is on the fly. So please bear with us, and please help us by making sure you confirm your registrations (here) and by not repeatedly PMing me or other staff with questions. If you have any questions, just post them in this thread. We will answer them as quickly and effectively as we can.

So that's it... let the games begin. Sorry for the long post but if you read it all the way through, then you're ready to Hognosticate to your fullest potential!!!!

Here is a direct link to the Hognostications section: http://www.the-hogs.net/Hognostications/

Hognosticators might want to bookmark that page on top of the front page and forum page.

You will also find a permanent link to the section in the drop down menu on every page of the website. Look for Hognostications under Redskin Blogs in the Features drop down.

We will also put something on the front page of the website very soon, but for now we just want to get things going!!!!

Enjoy.

When I go to the main page, I can't see a link to the Hognostications section. Maybe it's right there in front of me and I just don't see it. I'll keep looking.

Try reading my post. :thump:

I'd cut and paste the pertinent part but that would be encouraging continued spoon feeding. Image

No it is not. The next thread down. But if you are on the list (now or later on) or received a (probably delayed) e-mail message with this text, you are fine.

You are not postuing them for the-first- time, Are you?

If you have any questions, just post them in this thread. We will answer them as quickly and effectively as we can.

I'm in the confirmation thread, but I haven't been added to the pool. Did I submit my picks on time? Thanks.

All picks are in for week one... 56 in total... I have also now updated the results to reflect the standings from Thursday's game.

Good luck tomorrow.

For all Hognosticators... you should now find your username in the drop down box (on the picksheet page). So from now on... just choose your name from the list and make your selections.

People can still get in on the pool and play weekly... or try catch up! :-)

BOSS HOG..You may ask, why am I posting this here? I don't know where else to post it...is the answer. At the beginning of this thread it says to "confirm that your picks are in, or email us at feedback@the hogs.net. That is all I was doing, please don't take it as a personal afront. I do understand that you get emails and can understand that it must be a lot of work. What I don't get is how my emailing to feedback went to your email. SORRY. Personally I love this forum and think that you ALL do a fantastic job. Are you the only one that responds to feedback? Just wondering.

No... you only had to confirm your FIRST set of picks (last week) in a thread so that we could confirm that you were in fact in the pool. Before last week... your name didn't automatically come up in the drop down box on the picksheet page... presumably this week it did... so obviously you're in the pool.

Then on Thursday I posted that I had updated the pool with the picks that I had received, and that I would be entering any more that I received on SATURDAY... and that this would be the schedule for the remainder of the year.

So... if you submit your picks by Wednesday night... you should see them on Thursday's list... if you submit them after that... you won't see them until Saturday... you don't need to confirm your picks with me every time... that's why NOBODY else did this week... and if you have any questions, you can ask in the forums like i told you in my e-mail.

Incidentally... a couple of you sent your picks in late... I will allow it this week but moving forward, we will use the cut off date and time as outlined in the schedule on the main pool page. (Friday at 9pm for most weeks that start with regular Sunday 1pm games)

Thanks.

Thank You. I, myself not being so computer savvy, now get the picture. Dallas tonight, should be fun.
