How much time does a Qb really need to devolop

The reason I asked this is because, I know Campell is young but Brady and Big Ben both won superbowls in their second years. This is recent, not ancient. I was thinking what qualities does Campell have that makes him a non starter. He has the physical tools, he use to constant turnover learing a new offense (he has proved he can learn on the go, well college is diffrent from the pros). Manning started right off the bat. Is Campell a slow learner? Kyle Orton lead his team to the playoffs in his first year. I am begining to think now if Campell hasn't learned to be a starter by now, I am worried he won't ever learn. Is Al's offense really that complex. Another reason I think this is weird because with my experience in sports the best way to learn is on the field, I coached Rugby and I have never meet a player that learned sitting on the bench, they all learned by playing on the field, and like Big Ben and Brady he has the players around him to devolop, Great recieving core, Portis and Duckett which could be a two headed monster, one of the best o-lines in football, Cooley for recieving te and we have te's that could come in block, Sellars is like a guard in the back field he can pick up the blitz. I think this is the perfect time to start him, and I think with our recievers locked up for the next couple of years they can get to know each other this year and really fly for the next couple of years.

Yeah, but JC is learning another new offensive system. And this isn't your ordinary system.

One thing Jason does have going for him, is if he is infact inserted into the starting role, Mark has shown he would be very supportive and help Jason as best he could.

Nontheless, I still do not want JC to start one game this year, maybe some playing time at the end of a blowout or something, but next year is JC's turn. This is still Mark's ship.

I wrote this after the end of last season and I believe it now more than ever. I don't think it's very probable that these Redskins are good enough to win the Superbowl with Brunnell as their quarterback. I think Campbell MAY be good enough to lead them. Either way, I'll be rooting for them.

Even Brunell indicated that Saunder's system is very complex.

Let Mark start the season. IMO (and unfortunately for us) Mark won't last physically... JC will be the man from that point forward.

He'll lean heavily on the good recievers and backs he has and the D will have to keep games close so that we continue to run the ball.

1. Mark is the best QB right now.
2. JC needs to be #2 over Collins.
3. If Mark goes down JC needs to step in and look good. If Mark is out for more than 2 games and JC looks poised, Id probally roll with him for the rest of the season.
4. If Mark is out for 1 game, I think he gets the job back afterwards.
5. JC definately needs to start next year. Hopefully he'll DESERVE it. He looks well on his way.

Both Brady and Ben came in because they were forced and they shined. Every QB is different and offensive schemes can also make a difference. Gibbs thinks Brunell is a better option and unless JC is forced in this season, we may be talking about this again next year. I don't really care who the QB is as long as the team is winning games.

Better learn by mid season, he might be needed.

Bingo. And in both cases they replaced an injured veteran qb. It may be a case where a young qb is told early in camp that he's the starter feels more pressure (or at least has more time to think about it) than if he's thrown in mid-season because his team needs him to step up.

Pllus keeping a hot team rolling is easier than getting a cold one started.

If you've seen Leinert play in his preseason games apparently you only need two days...

That's very true CLL. And I would not be surprised at all to see it happen here. I don't wish ill to Brunell, I just see it as a possibility.

True, but how does that matter regarding the alleged 'tune-up' period of young QBs. Some need it (like Drew Brees didn't shine from the start), but some don't (like Big Ben, Brady, Culpeper, and others). Regarding Brady, while he was in his second season when he won the Super Bowl in '01, it was his first as a starter, and with any sort of regular playing time. Prior to that season, he had a grand total of 3 regular season pass attempts.

I think the worst thing that could happen to JC is that he has to sit on the bench all year and we have a mediocre if not bad season and then he is expected to be the starting saviour next year. Can you imagine the pressure he will face next year as a starter w/o real game experience and 2 years of sitting on the bench being asked to assume the helm?

Much better scenario is he comes in for either a injured or underperforming Brunell this year early to mid season and runs with it without all of the preseason buildup hype. It would be better to come in when expectations are tempered rather than be exposed to the media/fan hype machines all year and have delusional expectations placed upon him.

Brunell looks absolutely awful thus far this season. Change is harder for an older person and this is being reflected in his play.

My $.02

What makes anyone think brunell wont hold up all season? Erase the preseason from your minds. Saunders himself said he left the end of the lines open thats why brunell was pressured so bad. It wont happen like that in the real season.

I do believe in jc and think he will do fine but no one knows what he will do. Thats why brunell is the starter.

Do a little bit of research. Go back and see how long Rypien learned the system before he got to play. It will give you some idea of how Joe Gibbs does things. And regardless of how many assistants the man has, he is clearly still making the calls like this.

I wouldnt exactly say Kyle Orton LED his team to the playoffs, he just didn't screw it up

Exactly. He was last year's Trent Dilfer, circa 2000.

I agree Niki! This is how Gibbs works.

I find it interesting that people seem to compare the athletes and their situations and their success or failure as if they are all machines or the circumstances "prove" that this or that will happen because it worked before.

Joe Gibbs does not coach or make decisions based on what worked (or didn't work!) for Lombardi, Spurrier, Landry, Walsh, Coryell or any other coach (or non coach) you can name. This is his team and we will see players that Gibbs thinks gives him the best chance to win.
It might be that we will see Campbell soon but that will be based on his progress and when Saunders and Gibbs thinks he is ready not on what some other QB did at the same age or some other equally profound reasoning.

I am sure that nobody really believes that if Cowher or Bill B were running our team we would have as much chance of doing well this year as we do with Joe Gibbs.

Campbell may very well be the next Big Ben except for the fact that Gibbs and Saunders prefer veteran quarterbacks. As long as Brunell can play, he will. Remember the year before last? Brunell played terrible but stayed in until there was no other option. Brunell has his good and bad. But the bottom line is that he is still in there and will continue to be unless he gets hurt (<- not wishing that on him either) or until Campbell makes it so apparent that he is so much better that there is no choice.

Not to make this an Arizona chat but....

As for Leinart, I have watched him play at USC almost every weekend. (I am also a USC fan.) He played in a pro style offense there. Going to Arizona was just a shift for him from one pro offense to another, sort of like moving from one NFL team to another.

Campbell also played in a pro-style offense at Auburn.

Fair enough. He was still the starting Qb most of the year.

What makes anyone think brunell wont hold up all season?

The last 3 seasons of his career.
