Why is this team a Super Bowl contender?

I first want to say that I am a true Skins fan. I just have a quesiton as to why this team is considered Super Bowl contender.

Just two seasons ago the team was not so good. Last year they make the playoffs and look good doing so. But if they don't win the 5 straight games they don't make the playoffs. I am tempering my expectations and think that the team may win 8 or 9 games. The NFC East is not an easy division and will only be more difficult with a better Philly team this year. Just think about the division games and how the Skins won some of them. That magic won't happen again this year.

I again want you all to know that I love the Skins, but come on Super Bowl maybe next year.

Thoughts?

I'm sure some people will give long, detailed, and intelligent responses to the question.

I am only going to say one thing.

The Redskins are a legit Super Bowl contender because there is no team in the NFC that is significantly better than them. To me, it's that simple.

What kind of logic is that? If they didn't wet the bed against the Buccaneers, Raiders and Chargers they would have had homefield advantage throughout the playoffs.

Playing "what if" is pretty pointless. The Redskins were 11-7 last season, nothing less, nothing more.

You have a point about the pointlessness. So do you expect them team to be a Super Bowl contender or winner?

And very simple logic tells you that the team won a playoff game last year, could have beat the eventual NFC champs, improved (as opposed to regressing) during the off-season so they meet the basic criteria to be a "contender" ... bearing in mind that "contending" shouldn't be confused with "guaranteed to appear/win"

the best way to answer that question is in parts. each part is a person and together they make a team.

the O line: a solid group. with no weak points the O line led this team last year allowing a powerful running game in spite of opposing defenses ability to stuff 8 men in the box. this O line allowed brunell to have enough time to play football with few errors. he had more tds than ints.

the qb:

our qb is a vet. he makes the plays that have to be made. he wont throw usless balls and has a cannon. last year even though he had only one wide out he hit moss all the time and in pressure situations. (also we have two back ups, one vet who knows the new system and one youngster who is a physical specimen that few rival.)

wide outs:

last year we had a probowler. this year we have a probowler, a superbowl champ and a highlight reel. nuff said.

running backs:

last year we had a redskin record setting back who carried the team on his shoulders. this year we have the same but also have just added a power runner to balance our running attack. portis and tj are a powerful pair and when they are put in a two back scheme will be hard to defend. also with addition of our new wide outs there wont be 8 men in the box anymore allowing our running game to be more explosive on fewer carries.

TEs:

we had cooley. wow a break out seasons last year to say th least. a TD machine with hands second to none. a powerful runner after the catch now has a partener. fauria in NE was a solid player. never dropped balls. always made his block. two TE sets will be common place these days for the skins. we have a vet and a playmaking youngster, a star in the making

D line:

our d line last year lead our team in all aspects. It created turnovers. it provided pressure on the qb. it stopped opposing running games and created havoc for opposing coordinators.

LBs

we lost a star this year to the giants but one that was at the end of his carear. we all know lavar is "crutches" our corps now consists of fast aggresive guys that tip balls and creat ints.

our secondary is second to none. 21. nuff said. archuleta. nuff said.

now that we have all the players in place, the kind of players that show no weakness and work together as a team creating a team that has no holes across the board our success will come down to coaching and execution.

coahes:

greg williams proved last year that he is one of the dominent defensive coaches in the leauge. we created turnovers. we blitzed effectivly. we had a hard hitting scary ass defense that made players miss catched because they were afraid of being hit.

al saunders... wow, what can be said about a guy who led KC to several years of penultimet offensive football?! spreading the ball to all the playmakers. creating a passing game that disects defenses. creating a running game that allows for explosive game breaking runs. utilizing not only the deep ball and tough crossing routs but a TE scheam that exploits the talents of a player like cooley. with all the new talent on our offense, al will provide all with a plan for success.

gibbs.

our head coach is a hall of famer for a reason. hes a coach who breeds success. he gathers the right men around him. he finds the cream of the crop based both in talent and character. and demandss nothing short of perfection. while a perfectionist, he is also known as a players coach. the players love him and respect what hes says and does. these guys would go to war for gibbs and that is exactly what theyll do. gibbs is a winner. when he makes the playoffs he wins in the playoffs. his winning percentage is rediculous as are his superbowl rings. not only is he able to win at football but other professions as well. he went to nascar and won again. he is a true leader a true manager of people and a proven winner.

our team is set. we have a set of starters that rivals the great powerhouses of the leauge. we have the best coaching staff bar none. and we have the best fans in the world. the only thing we cant control is the rest of the leauge.

our division is the toughest in football right now. TO, parcells, mcnabb, eli, tiki... all these names are names that will be around for a while. nothing to sneeze at. but nobody has it all .... these other teams are good teams but they all lack in areas. the eagles lost the best reciver in the leauge and are rebuilding their pride after years of dominence. the cowboys got that cancer and are now dealing with it the best they can... we all know how thats gonna turn out. :) then there are the giants.

the giants are our competition. they are a good team the won the division last year. and even though they did we beat them when it count. last year we had a lesser team and we beat them in the 5 game stretch at the end to make the playoffs... now we are a better team with better coaches. nothing can stop us short of a superhuman performance by the giants. we will be in the playoffs whether we win the didvision or not. and in the playoffs we will deliver. we have the will the way and the coach to lead us there.

superbowl here we come.

I've got them at 11-5 and losing in the NFC Championship. This is a better team than the 2005 version, but one that is still flawed and will probably face better competition within our division. At the same time, we shouldn't get swept by the AFC again.

But the most important point is that we play in the NFC, where no team can be considered significantly more talented than the Redskins. The optimism on this board will always be a bit out of control, but I really believe this team, should it stay healthy, will be the best we have seen since 1991.

We won 10 games last yr. We have added Randle El, Lloyd, Carter & Archuleta among others. That should be good for 2 more wins. Therefore I predict 12-4 & a good run in the playoffs. We will be superbowl contenders. there's never a guarantee.

This is a pretty strong statement. Best since 91. That team was unstoppable...and I do not think this team holds a candle to them...[/quote]

We don't have to be as good as the 91 team. Nobody else comes close either.

I would also say that they are a Super Bowl contender because who in the NFC is significantly ahead of them? I do not think the NFC has a Colts-like team that is above and beyond, so I think it is safe to say the Redskins are a contender, equivelent to several others....

As we all know the NFC East is a Monster this year. It will in all likelyhood be between us and Dallas. Even though the Giants getting Santana's little brother does worry me. Philly I think we can count on to go as McNabb goes and he's inconsistant. We are a SB contender for many reasons....

1. OUR HEAD COACH HAS PERSONALLY DELIVERED 3
2. OUR STARTING O-LINE IS CAPABLE (Randy Thomas for MVP)
3. OUR RB is money down the stretch, plus we have the TJhammer
4. OUR Defense is a top 5 Defense providing we hold serve at CB
5. WE HAVE EXPERIENCE AND A STABLE ORGANIZATION.

For these reasons alone we should compete fairly in the East and I expect to win it, all, first things first let's get a win in the pre-season and stay injury free, then manhandle the Vikes while resting some guys for the absolute WAR we see in Week 2.

I think our division is way overrated. Let me be the first to say dallas will NOT win more than 7 games. Does anyone think jj will carry the load? I also think bledsoe will be benched after week 2 :P after an o-2 start leaving romo to learn and the team will implode with t.o. running up and down the field for nothing no doubt runnin his fat mouth. This team is way overrated. I have a gut feeling about the eagles stinkin up the joint on O.

Which would leave the skins and g-men as the frontrunners for the division again. The gints do have a sick O and veteran d players but i think the last game at home against them will be the difference. I say we have a chance at home field for 1 game if the bears collapse, which im hopin for.

I don't know about benched, but given the (lack of) quality of his O line & his (lack of) mobility, he'll have a tough time staying on the field all yr.

who makes teh team, who makes practice squad?

Because it made the playoffs last year, and the only question marks are at backup positions.

2 reasons - 1 everybody has as good a shot at it as anyone else and 2 at the end of last year we were one of the better teams in the league and we improved a lot more than the teams that were better than us.

Just two seasons ago the team was not so good. Last year they make the playoffs and look good doing so. But if they don't win the 5 straight games they don't make the playoffs. Last year, Philly lost every game in the division and their last 6 games this year are a nightmare! This stretch also includes 3 games in a row against Dallas, the Giants and the Redskins and all 3 are on the road!
Just think about the division games and how the Skins won some of them. That magic won't happen again this year.

My thoughts are simple - We ended last year as the best team in the division and we are better this year. The other teams in our division have much tougher schedules than us and we have the best coaches. We are a very viable SB contender and will be a very competitive team for some time.

The Redskins beat both the Bears and Seahawks last year. There is no reason why it can't happen.
