Why Not Lumsden

Why didn't Lumsden play tonight against the Jets until the bitter end?!!?!?! I am really pissed at that!!! Is this team now sending him a message that he is not in their plans?

I hope not.

Like BH, I really like this kid and I'm hoping he is given a legitimate shot at making the team.

If you put him in the game with only minutes left, that's not a legitimate shot, in my opinion!!!

Maybe still banged up to much!!, It was nice to Betts for a few plays, reassuring a bit.

I agree and if he is still banged up a little then he should be able to play next week.

I think they were giving Nemo a shot yesterday, so perhaps we can look forward to Jesse's shot next week.

Well to be honest, anything other than 'nursing him back to health' doesn't make much sense.

It's not like they don't like the kid... it's not like they don't see a lot of potential in him. When I spoke to Kerry Carter on Friday, he himself told me how much the Redskins really liked Jesse.

So personally, I think that it was more a case of making sure Jesse's injury had healed sufficiently before giving him a long look. He only started practicing again on Thursday and with the Redskins backfield injuries, it only makes sense to not do anything stupid. The Redskins know that they don't have to make any cuts until after the patriots game, so they know that they have two games to evaluate.

Fact is that I didn't think that any of the running backs looked that good except for Mike Sellers... and he was going against a fairly second tier defense. I think the Redskins just want to give Sellers the ball a few times so that his 'role' isn't so obvious when he's out there during the regular season. he's shown that he can handle the added 'duty' anyway i think... dude was awesome looking... DL or LB better get a piece of him because if he gets deeper than that on a run, he's going to destroy somebody.

I think you can expect to see a lot more of Jesse this week, but I'll try and catch up with him this week and see what he says. I assure you that I was as disappointed as anybody at his lack of work, but I also think it's great for Jesse that none of the incumbents did much to make the Redskins NOT want to give him a good look next week.

Rock's TD run was a good effort, but pretty average other than that... one nice 8-yard run, and a bunch of very short gains. Broughton just hasn't looked as impressive as he did in last year's preseason yet, and was also pretty unremarkable other than losing a fumble.

So have no fear... I think Jesse will get his shot this week and the kid's a gamer... I think he'll be jacked up and ready to go show this Redskin team that they'd be nuts to get rid of him.

It could have been caution but it may have been -- the coaches want to figure out if they should keep Rock or Nemo as the 2nd FRB. The best Jesse could be this year is the 3rd RB. I'd say, he's headed to the IR (mystery injury) for the year or the Inactive List. He's our #2 next year when Betts leaves for more cash.

Wonder if our coaches didn't want to show too much of him to the Jets who need RBs (very badly) and could have plucked him from our Inactive List?

At the risk of offending some members of this board:

I find it very hard to believe that a guy who didn't play until the absolute garbage time of a preseason game, and got 1 carry, is being hidden away from other teams or is in our plans as a potential #2 RB next year or that he's going to be getting a ton of carries next week, as the 3rd week of preseason is generally when team's play starters the most.

I'm sorry, but this all just sounds crazy to me and I think it's just biased talk. I'm sure he's a good guy and a hard worker but if the coaches really thought he was an NFL caliber RB he'd be in there.

Just my 2 cents here.

I'm not talking about any wild conspiracy theories like Jesse is being 'hidden', and I'm certainly not talking about whether or not Jesse is going to be the #2 running back next year... All I'm talking about is the possibility of him making the team... not about being our future at running back.

But I DO think that just coming back from an injury two days before the game had as much to do with how much he played as anything else did. Maybe I'm wrong... maybe I'm not. We'll know more next week when the Patriots game is done I guess.

You certainly aren't offending me -- we're all entitled to our opinions. That's what these boards are for.

Your opinion is -- he's not someone the Skins want? If so, that's entirely possible. It doesn't seem to fit the stuff that SKins coaches are saying about him. If he is someone they want -- why would he only carry once at the end?

Maybe Gibbs is blowing smoke again -- ?

I can honestly say that I hope all the pro-Lumsden guys are right about him. I'd love to have another quality player on the team, at any position. And he sounds like a real good guy.

I just think it speaks volumes about a player when he only gets 1 carry late in the 4th quarter of a preseason game. Let's be honest: most of the players that were out there at that time, aren't going to be making their respective teams.

I'm afraid you're right. I'd like to see another good RB on the roster, I'm not a big fan of Betts. Somehow, it seems to me that his doesn't put the effort in the Portis, Cartwright & Sellers do.

I hate to agree with you, but I do. Portis and Sellers are solid. I'd love to see Jessie beat out Betts and Rocki. Betts is too fragile and Rock is just ok.

I just think that they were going to give Nemo numerous caries today to see what he could do. Which wasn't much. The starters will probably play the 1st half next week and then we will see Lumsden in the 2nd half and possibly most of the last game.

I know Lumsden has a lot of fans on this board but I have to say this.

I just don't understand those of you who want him over guys like Betts and Rock. These guys have been with the team for years and have had 100 yard games. They have been through the wars of the NFL regular season. They are proven NFL backups. Lumsden hasn't done anything yet aside from look good in drills and having a couple good runs in a meaningless scrimmage. I know Lumsden is a hard worker and a good guy but the whole thing makes no sense to me. Why is everyone so quick to drop these guys who have been good to us for years in favor of a guy who has never done anything for the Washington Redskins? It really bothers me. Maybe it's just me.

Don't forget there was a 12 plus minute drive in the 3rd qtr. that probably messed up everyones playing time. Jesse was the one that got the short end of the stick because he went last.

The reason I want him to do well is his combination of size and speed. We don't have that with anyone else. Hopefully, he can put it all together. I think we will see more of him against the Pats.

I know we're pretty much set at RB and back up RB, and back up to the back up RB, but I'd love to have Gibbs and Saunders go into the last preseason game and tell Jesse, "here's the ball son, you're starting, you're carrying the load, let's see what you can do"... then watch him run for about 180 while Portis and the rest of the RBs are on the sideline laughing and cheering and giving high 5's with each big run... and fans yelling, "Jesse, Jesse, Jesse" as he comes out the game in the second half...

hey, it could happen...

Perhaps you're reading too deep into some peoples assessments of Lumsden to believe that "everyone" wants HIM over the others. Personally, I didn't know Jesse Lumsden until I first heard about him on THN. I reserved judgment on him until I actually saw him practice & play. I think he's a great kid, and has a bright future ahead. If he makes the team, that would be great, since it would make for a great story.

However, I don't feel that he DESERVES anything over Betts, Rock, or any other back up. He's earning it, just like the rest of them, and he is making the RB spot more competitive. There's nothing wrong with having a hard time to decide over good backup RBs. It would suck to have 3 scrubs battling for 1 position, and we are fortunate to have capable guys (proven or unproven) who are busting their tails to play for this team.

There's competition in Washington... may the best man win!!!

For one of a very few times on this board, I agree with redeemed. I think crazyhorse is the only one advocating Betts and Rock be replaced by Lumsden. I think most of us think Jesse can be a solid special teams player and the type of character guy that fits in well with the team.

He might also be a top notch KR & usefull backup RB.

Did Lumsden get in on special teams on Saturday?

Serious question as I honestly didn't notice.

yes, he was basically the first guy down on the return for TD... he was coming from the outside though and the return went up the middle inside of him...

Yeah I saw the samething, they played sorry Kerry Carter before he got injured why not Lumsen. His injury must still be affecting him.
