The Redskins just traded Taylor Jacobs to the 49ers for CB Mike Rumph. This really solidifies our secondary. Taylor Jacobs was about to get cut anyway. The 49ers are fools.

Interesting trade. One underacheiver for another. I'm a big Miami Hurricanes fan and I remember Rumph being a very solid corner in college. Unfortunately for him his college success hasn't really translated to much success at this level. Hopefully a change of scenery will do him some good.

GREAT move in my opinion.

I remember Rumph was having a solid season a few years ago but it ended early due to injury.

This move was great because we are getting a good cornerback (something last night showed us that we need now) for someone who wasn't going to make the roster anyways. He'll probably start out as our 4th cornerback and depending on Wright's perfomance the rest of the preseason, could become our new (and younger) nickelback.

I can't wait to see what Rumph can do when he dons the Burgundy and Gold.

Haha I hope so. The guy has to get better simply by being traded away from the Niners.

Anything for Jacobs is a steal, because as others have mentioned, I don't think he was going to stay on the roster anyway. Now someone please tell me it was a straight-up player-for-player trade, and we didn't throw in any picks!

As for Rumph, I haven't seen much of him, so I won't comment on that 'underacheiver' title. But I do have faith in G. Williams and the rest of the D pressing him to raise his game. Sometimes, an underachiever is just lacking proper motivation.

Great trade!!! Rump has been pretty good when healthy...he's just not been healthy. But as a backup with us, he should remain fresh.

A couple more things on Rumph. When he was at Miami he played corner but the Niners switched him to safety. He was drafted in the first round (27th) overall and he missed most of the past 2 seasons because of injury after having a solid year in 2003.

Both players must pass physicals right?

We'll see how good his cover skills are but one thing the guy can do is hit. Check out the hit that he put on T.O.

I LOVE this move.

Rumph has underachieved thus far in his NFL career but he was a great talent coming out of college and now has a 2nd chance under a brilliant coaching staff. Jacobs was completely worthless. I'd trade him for just about anybody, let alone a young talented secondary player. VERY VERY happy with this move.

I am very happy with this trade and i believe it is a pretty fair trade. Jacobs is going nowhere fast. Rumph hasnt been great either but he has mroe upside at this point. We need help in the secondary

The Washington Redskins and San Francisco 49ers swapped two former top draft choices on Monday to fill needs on both sides of the footabll. The Redskins sent wide receiver Taylor Jacobs, a second-round pick 2003, to the 49ers in exchange for cornerback Mike Rumph, a first-round pick in 2002.

Jacobs slid down the Redskins' depth chart over the past couple of years since Joe Gibbs replaced Steve Spurrier as head coach. Washington drafted Jacobs on Spurrier's suggestion because he felt that Taylor fit his offense. But over the past two seasons the Redskins have revamped their receiving core and now use Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El and Brandon Lloyd as their top three receivers. James Thrash, a Redskins veteran, was also ahead of Jacobs on the Redskins' depth chart.

Rumph, meanwhile, was having difficulty fitting into Mike Nolan's defense. Though he was drated as a cornerback, Rumph was used at safety last year, but that experiment failed. He moved back to corner this offseason, but was behind Walt Harris and Shawntae Spencer on San Francisco's depth chart. Rumph had a tough game in the preseaon opener against the Bears. Playing cornerback, he was involved in several missed tackles and there was some question as to whether or not he would make the team.

Rumph has a chance to do some specialty coverage work in the Redskins' system. His speciatly is man-to-man, something that defensive coordinator Gregg Williams might be able to use.

The acquisition of Jacobs fits the 49ers' profile as they try to upgrade athletically at the wide reciever position for purposes of helping surround second-year quarterback Alex Smith with more playmakers.

Good trade for the Redskins in that they needed some depth but it would have been nice to grab an o-lineman instead.

Can't whine about getting Rumph for Jacobs when Taylor wasn't likely to make the team. Maybe a change of scenery will help him out... he truly is a really nice kid.

As for Rumph... maybe this collection of players from Miami that we're accumulating can help him get his career back on track. He's a great guy to have for depth in that he can back up both CB and Safety and should be fine in nickel and dime situations. If he can regain some of his luster, he could easily push Wright out of the third spot.

This deal was a no brainer. I like Jacobs, but the kid was on his way out of here... we get a tremendously talented and aggressive DB in exchange. I certainly think that Williams system will help Rumph maximize his potential.

Maybee Portis will be a bit happier today.

I am totally pshyced about this move! Sure, Taylor was cool, but I think ESPY would have made the team over him, and ESPY still might not make it.

Why so rough on Jacobs? I think he;s a good kid who tries hard but never made it with the Skins. I wish him well in SF.

While I think Taylor will be a good player one day, we do need more talent at CB. I'm not so sure this guy is a CB though. He may have played that in college but at 6'2" 208 lbs he's awfully big for a CB.

Did I read he's good at man to man coverage but had problems wrapping guys up? That is really hard to believe with his size. Wms will make him learn how to tackle, or he'll be shown the door.

I wish Taylor well...I liked him and still thought he had potential.
