I appologize if this was posted already but I think it would be a very bad move. I'm all for G. Williams taking the hel when Gibbs steps down. This was on Pro Football Talk website.

GIBBS HEADING BACK TO NASCAR AFTER 2007?

The talk in NASCAR circles (hey, we got sources everywhere) is that Joe Gibbs will retire (again) from coaching after the 2007 season and return to the NASCAR team that he owns.

And this news will only fuel speculation that Redskins owner Dan Snyder will target Steelers coach Bill Cowher to be his successor, notwithstanding the assumption that current Washington defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is in line for the job.

Cowher is under contract through 2007, and with the Steelers opening camp on Friday the chances of an extension coming any time before the end of the 2006 season will be slim and/or none.

At that point, Cowher might just finish out his contract and see what he can get on the open market. Our guess? The Redskins would pay Cowher at least two dollars for every one that the Steelers would pay.

Cowher will not be our head coach. I don't believe Gibbs is gonna leave so soon. Even if he does, Willams (most likely) or Saunders will take over.

I have said it MANY times before. PFT is the least reliable source for football news and FACTS on the internet.

This is the second time PFT has tried to float that rumor, their site gets a lot of news before anyone else, but its also just a blog and whoever runs it is entitled to post their own opinion/speculation, and this is nothing more then that.

Also, I believe the person that runs that site is a Steelers fan, and is very much overestimating Cowher's value. Lets be honest, if the referees don't make numerous mistakes in the Super Bowl in the Steelers favor, the Seahawks would have won and Cowher would be on the hot seat as the guy that can't get it done. He's not a guy I would give the job to over Gregg under any circumstances.

it is amazing that someone can completely make something up and post it as "news", even if it's just supposed to be a "rumor". you can't even call something a rumor if you're the one that made it up and are the only one saying it.

gibbs already has two excellent head coaching candidates on staff in GW and AS.

Greg Williams has been a great D Coordinator, but living near Buffalo and watching him as a Head Coach up hear, unless Joe Gibbs has taught him a thing or 2 about Head Coaching this is a bad move. He had some weapons here in Buffalo years ago and he was an awful head coach, this move reminds me of the last time Joe left and we replaced him with the defensive coordinator, remember Richie Petibone, great D, bad Head coach.

I disagree. I think Norv would be a better example than Petitbon. Ritchie never got a fair chance. I also believe that Williams came here with the expressed purpose of learning how to be a head coach from Joe, and will be his replacement when Joe re-retires, hopefully to the front office.

Remember, Petibon was plagued with numerous injuries to key players during his year as the HC, and it seemed like every time he would insert a new player, someone else would go down. That left him scrambling during the week to try to find someone else to take that position, and I don't know that he really had the time to put together any kind of game plan. I mean, we lost the starting QB in the first game of the regular season, and the back-up was SO good that I can't even recall who it was. He got a bum rap, one that I don't think was entirely deserved.

Back on topic, let's hope that if it's GW that gets the next HC job, he keeps the coaching staff intact. Same thing goes if it's AS that gets the job.

Also in Petibon's defense, wasn't it fairly late in the offseason when Gibbs hung it up? I (and I think most of the rest of the football world) just remember being shocked at what was unexpected news of Gibbs' retirement. So I don't think Petibon really had much time after taking over to get ready, unlike these days, when new coaches are usually hired in Jan. or Feb. Plus, one year is nothing - a coach needs at least 2-3 years to get his players in place, etc. You can't judge a coach on a single season.

I remember that he didn't really take over the world as HC in Buffalo, but wasn't that his first HC job? Lots of guys struggle the first time they're head coaches (think Bill Belichik), and don't really flourish until their second shot at it.
