Panthers WR Smith injures left hamstring

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (July 29, 2006) -- Carolina Panthers All-Pro receiver Steve Smith was carted off the field with a hamstring injury on the opening day of training camp.

Midway through the afternoon session, Smith pulled up while running a long route down the left sideline. He immediately clutched his left hamstring, took a couple of steps and fell to the ground.

Two trainers came to his side, and new teammate Keyshawn Johnson also came over to check on Smith, who slowly got to his feet after about a minute. He threw his gloves in anger, got onto the back of the cart and was brought inside.

"It seems like he probably strained it," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said. "He's done this before in training camp."

Smith, who led the NFL with 103 receptions for 1,563 yards and 12 touchdowns last season, missed the final week of June's coaching sessions with hamstring pain.

Jaguars RB Taylor strains hamstring

NFL.com wire reports

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (July 29, 2006) -- Jaguars running back Fred Taylor began training camp the same way he did last year -- nursing an injury.

Taylor strained his right hamstring during a conditioning drill July 27 and was less than full speed when Jacksonville opened camp. It was hardly the start Taylor wanted, especially after spending all of last season recovering from a serious knee injury.

"I really wanted to come out the first day and give the fans something to ooh and ah about," said Taylor, who has been plagued by injuries the past four preseasons. "It's kind of sad that the timing is so screwed up. That's why it's so hard to understand. Somethings in life you can't figure out why they happen. They just do. I don't know why it happened. I was rested and I felt great."

Eagles WR Brown injures hamstring

NFL.com wire reports

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (July 29, 2006) -- Reggie Brown, expected to battle for the Eagles' No. 1 receiver position this year, injured his hamstring in practice.

Brown limped off the field after running one pass route during training camp at Lehigh University. He spent several minutes stretching and working with a trainer before walking slowly under his own power toward the locker room.

The team would not comment on the injury. Drafted 35th overall in 2005, Brown set a franchise record last season for most receptions by a rookie wide receiver with 43.

Despite starting only the final nine games of the season, he led all NFL rookies with 571 receiving yards and ranked third with four touchdown receptions. He was expected to have a major role this season following the offseason departure of Terrell Owens.

Other than Brown and veteran Todd Pinkston, the Eagles' receivers remain largely unheralded. Veterans Greg Lewis, Jabar Gaffney and Darnerien McCants are trying to make big impressions at camp, along with rookies Hank Baskett, Jason Avant and Jeremy Bloom.

Pinkston is coming off a torn Achilles' that forced him to miss all of 2005. Lewis and Gaffney have nine career touchdowns between them, and McCants has caught a total of 10 passes over the past two seasons.

Bills QB Nall injures left hamstring

NFL.com wire reports

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (July 29, 2006) -- Bills quarterback Craig Nall hurt his left hamstring in practice and said it was too early to determine the severity of the injury because of potential swelling.

"It feels OK, just going to play it smart," Nall told The Associated Press. "It's just doing everything we can so I can get back out on the field as soon as possible."

He added he will benefit by getting a day of rest by sitting out a scheduled walkthrough session July 30 before Buffalo holds its first practice with full pads July 31.

"We're hoping it's nothing significant, but we won't know for a couple of days," coach Dick Jauron said.

Competing with J.P. Losman and Kelly Holcomb for the Bills' starting job, Nall was hurt in the final 15 minutes of the second of Buffalo's two training camp practices of the day. He pulled up in pain while scrambling in the backfield during 11-on-11 drills.

"I just felt a little tweak in the hamstring when I just kind of changed direction and went to take off full speed," Nall said, noting he's previously injured his right hamstring. "I knew better than to try to tough it out and keep going."

Careful not to place too much weight on his left leg, he immediately went to team trainer Bud Carpenter. After a brief discussion, Nall pulled the front of his jersey over his head to hide his emotions before being escorted by an assistant trainer to the locker room.

2-3 weeks none of the injuries reported in this thread are considered to cost the injuried player any more than missed time during training camp

Panthers WR Smith listed as day-to-day
NFL.com wire reports

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (July 30, 2006) -- Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith missed practice a day after he strained his left hamstring while running a route at training camp.

Coach John Fox said Smith, who missed the final week of coaching sessions in June with tightness in the same hamstring, is listed as day-to-day.

"He was nursing it at the end of summer school, so we have to put him on the shelf, work the rehab, and we'll get him out here when he's healthy," Fox said. "We'll take it as slow as we need to."

Smith pulled up while running down the left sideline midway through the second practice July 29, Carolina's first day of camp. He immediately grabbed for his hamstring and fell to the ground. He eventually was carted off the field.

Titans DT Long to have season-ending surgery

NFL.com wire reports

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (July 30, 2006) -- Defensive tackle Rien Long will need season-ending surgery on his injured Achilles' tendon after an MRI exam showed it was severed, Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher said.

The Titans placed Long, a three-year veteran, on injured reserve. His roster spot was filled when running back LenDale White reported for camp after the paperwork on his contract had been completed.

With humidity and the temperature making it feel like 105 degrees, the Titans hit the field in full pads for the first time in training camp and defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth left practice early with heat-related dizziness.

He was treated inside the Titans' locker room at Austin Peay State University and did not return.

"Albert went real hard early in practice and got dizzy," Fisher said. "We're not going to take any risks there, so we took him in to cool him off."
