Today was our third football practice of the season. This is flag football for 4-6 year olds for those of you who don't know. My son Jackson is 4, soon to be 5, and this is his second year playing.

With the background information set, let me set the picture. On our team, we have twelve kids, ranging from barely four to almost seven. We run a drill that helps kids learn how to run with the ball, as well as helping kids learn how to pull flags. We were running this drill today.

The way it works is 5 kids start at one end of the field, each wearing a set of flags and carrying a ball. Five more kids line up at the other end of the field. The head coach blows the whistle, and the kids begin charging each other. If you score a touchdown, you keep the ball and stay on offense for the next round. If you go out of bounds or someone gets your flag, you go to the defense.

On to the point. After three rounds it was Jackson on offense and all 9 of the other kids on defense. The coach blows the whistle and Jackson starts up the field. He drifts to the right sideline, drawing all of the defenders over, then cuts back across the field, heading up the left sideline for a touchdown. One against nine, not yet five against nine kids, three of which are almost seven. It was one of my proudest moments as a Dad (at least in regards to football).

Our coach (a Cowboys fan) calls him JP - Jackson Portis.

Enjoy it... savor it... roll around in it.... it won't last anywhere near long enough. Trust me.

What is next? a Giants trainer? After all he already has a Skins dad and mom!

I say he is growing up to be a full NFC East/Redskins fan.

I think it means "kids grow up too fast and those days are gone before you know it". Seems like yesterday I was telling stories like that about Jake's pee wee football days....Jake is almost 19 years old now.

Congrats Jackson and Jansen Fan Family !! I know you're having fun with this !!

I wish I could have seen that, I would have went crazy.

Trust me, DesertSkin knows exactly what that means. He's always been a little paranoid... ever since he was 4, and I wrote "37" on his chest in bugundy magic marker, and had him backpedaling in the yard. He loved the Oklahoma drill back then, too.

At least I was lucky enough to watch him play in college.





Today, he does other things that make be proud.

I taught Jackson everything he knows at the tailgates! We welcome all challengers!

He'll have two practices per week during training camp. Games don't start till september. Then they have a 9 game season followed by a two week playoff. We won the Super Bowl last year, so hopefully, with the same coach who, NFL team allegiance aside, he is a great coach. He started the league three years ago because he had a 4 year old daughter who only had the choice of playing soccer and didn't want to. As a result, it is all about the kids with him. He coaches softball, flag football and youth basketball that I know if, and probably more. He makes sure everyone plays every position unlike the team we beat in the Super Bowl last year.

Here's is the latest update for those who are interested.

Jackson reached the end zone for the first time in competition today. It was 1st and 10 on our own 5-yard line. The screen was called and Jackson was ready. He sprinted out to the sideline. The quarterback put the ball up and Jackson was not ready. I yelled his name from behind the play, and he turned just in time to make the grab.

The defense converged and there is no blocking allowed, so it was up to Jackson’s physical ability and cunning moves to get him through. Jackson cut past the first defender, side stepped between two others and turned on the Jets. 45 yards later, Jackson was in the end zone. Just like John Riggins, Jackson handed the ball to the ref and strolled out of the end zone like it was old hat.

Last week, he had the longest run of the game, going in motion from the wide receiver position, taking the hand off and tearing up the sideline to the ½-yard line. Jackson is slowly working himself into a playmaker. He is starting over several almost-seven year olds at barely five.

Jansenfan only forgot that fact that in my excitement from the sidelines I did not manage to snap one picture or videotape the moment even though my camera was in my hand and the video camera was in my chair.

Luckily one of the other mom's was recording and managed to get the whole moment on tape and has agreed to let me copy the tape. I will be prepared next time and not jumping up and down screaming "Go Jackson go!!!"

Thats great JF. My son is 15 months old, and I cannot hardly wait until I can teach him football and the Skins! Count your blessings!
