CFL

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

CFL

Post by Steve Spurrier III »

I know nobody here cares about the CFL, but I can’t wait three weeks for the Ravens scrimmage to start discussing live football. I know we have some members from the Great White North who might have some opinions to share about the CFL; otherwise, I’ll just be talking to myself.

Week 5 Results

Hamilton Tiger-Cats 20, Calgary Stampeders 17

Rookie kicker Mike Myers hit a 44-yard field goal as time expired to give the Tiger-Cats their first win of the season.

Someone you might know: Former Florida State star and Chargers third round pick Tay Cody registered four tackles and an interception that led to a Tiger-Cats touchdown.

Someone you should know: Hamilton’s Terry Vaughn set the CFL’s all-time receptions mark with a three-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter. His 10 catches for 79 yards give him 973 receptions for his 12-year career, one better than Darren Flutie (brother of Doug).

Saskatchewan Rough Riders 29, British Columbia Lions 28

Jamie Mitchell forced a fumble that led to the tying touchdown early in the fourth quarter as the Rough Riders come back to beat the Lions.

Someone you might know: Rough Riders quarterback Kerry Joseph, who tried out for the Redskins as a slotback in 1998, finished with 248 yards passing and 30 yards rushing to go along with three touchdowns (2 passing, 1 rushing).

Someone you should know: Saskatchewan receiver Jason Armstead had 124 yards receiving and two touchdown catches. The 26-year old was a CFL All-Star in 2005.

Montreal Alouttes 44, Winnipeg Blue Bombers 16

The Alouttes outscored the Blue Bombers 28-1 in the second half to remain undefeated.

Someone you might know: Former Pro Bowler and Patriots first round pick Robert Edwards had just 22 yards rushing, but two touchdown catches for Montreal.

Someone you should know: Anthony Calvillo threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns in the Alouttes’ victory. In 2004, Calvillo became just the fourth quarterback in CFL history to throw for more than 6,000 yards in a season.

Standings

Eastern Division
Montreal      4-0
Winnipeg      3-2
Toronto       1-3
Hamilton      1-4

Western Division
Calgary       3-2
Edmonton      2-2
Saskatchewan  2-2
B.C.          2-3

Our good friend Ricky Williams had a bye week. Williams has had a tough start, with just 214 yards and 1 touchdown through four games. The general consensus is that in addition to the CFL game not suiting his style at all, he suffers from a poor offensive line and uncreative play-calling.

Coming up:

7/20 Hamilton at Montreal
7/20 Winnipeg at Edmonton
7/21 B.C. at Calgary
7/22 Toronto at Saskatchewan

For those of us in the D.C. area, the 7/20 Tiger-Cats/Alouttes game will be on Comcast SportsNet at 7:00.

Im canadian and I'll admit im not the biggest CFL fan in the world but with the different rules and field and philosophy its really not a bad game, as far as Ricky Williams goes 214 yards but is still averaging 4 yards a carry.

That's true, and he really hasn't looked that bad. Like I said, his surrounding personnel is pretty miserable.

That being said, his 4.0 average is close to the bottom of the CFL ranks.

Wow, what a week! Easily the most memorable of this young season:

Week 6 Results

Montreal Alouttes 41, Hamilton Tiger-Cats 38

Montreal hits a 13-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter to remain undefeated.

Someone you might know: Former Pro Bowler Robert Edwards ran for 82 yards and caught a touchdown pass.

Someone you should know: Montreal slotback, and two-time Outstanding Canadian, Ben Cahoon had 151 yards on eleven catches.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers 25, Edmonton Eskimos 22

Kevin Glenn completed a 100-yard touchdown catch as time expired as Winnipeg shocks the Eskimos.

Someone you might know: Former Seahawk, Jaguar and Giant defensive back Ike Charlton recorded six tackles for the Blue Bombers.

Someone you should know: Milt Stegall had 254 yards receiving, thanks in large part to the 100-yard game-winning catch.

British Columbia Lions 43, Calgary Stampeders 20

The Lions score 30 second-half points as B.C. runs away from Calgary.

Someone you might know: Former Chargers backup Dave Dickenson threw for 264 yards and two touchdowns for British Columbia.

Someone you should know: The Lions’ Joe Smith ran for 138 yards and two touchdowns to go along with a touchdown reception in just his second CFL game.

Toronto Argonauts 26, Saskatchewan Rough Riders 23

The Argonauts finally got back in the win column, but it came at a steep price, as Ricky Williams broke his left arm, and is out indefinitely.

Someone you might know: After Spergon Wynn left the game due to an arm injury, Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch took over at quarterback. Crouch played well, including a 94-yard completion to Arland Bruce .

Someone you should know: Toronto defensive end Riall Johnson finished with five tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble.

Code: Select all

Standings

Eastern Division
Montreal      5-0
Winnipeg      4-2
Toronto       2-3
Hamilton      1-5

Western Division
B.C.          3-3
Calgary       3-3
Edmonton      2-3
Saskatchewan  2-3

But despite the 100-yard pass and Ricky Williams’ injury, the biggest news of the week was Doug Flutie nearly coming out of retirement to rejoin the Toronto Argonauts. The full story is here , but Flutie supposedly had purchased a plane ticket and was set to report to Argonauts practice before having a change of heart. Toronto Head Coach Michael "Pinball" Clemons says talks haven’t completely broken off. Toronto is very thin at the quarterback position after injuries to Damon Allen (brother of Marcus) and now Spergonn Wynn.

It may not be the NFL, but the CFL is anything but dull.

Coming up:

7/28 Winnipeg at Hamilton
7/28 Montreal at Edmonton
7/29 B.C. at Toronto
7/29 Calgary at Saskatchewan

For those of us in the D.C. area, the 7/28 Alouttes/Eskimos game will be played on tape delay, 7/29 at 1:00. For other listings, check here.
