The Redskins signed three of their 2006 draft picks on Monday, inking fifth-round defensive tackle Anthony Montgomery, sixth-round defensive tackle Kedric Golston and seventh-round linebacker Kevin Simon, the team announced.

To create roster space for the draft picks, the Redskins released five players: wide receiver Ron Johnson, defensive tackle Chris Mineo, linebacker Justin Stull, offensive lineman Daniel Martz and cornerback Chijioke Onyenegecha.

Montgomery, Golston and Simon join sixth-round safety Reed Doughty as draft picks to have signed so far. Second-round linebacker Roger McIntosh and seventh-round offensive lineman Kili Lefotu remain unsigned.

Montgomery, selected with the 153rd overall selection in the draft, is regarded as an athletic lineman who plays well against the run and the pass. The 6-5, 311-pounder is expected to compete for a backup role in training camp.

Montgomery played in 45 games with 23 starts at Minnesota and posted 137 tackles, 23 tackles for a loss and eight sacks during his career. Montgomery also collected two interceptions and four passes defended.

Golston, selected with the 196th overall pick in the draft, is also expected to be in the mix at defensive tackle.

The 6-4, 292-pounder played in 44 games at Georgia, with 30 starts, and had 95 tackles (43 solo), 3.5 sacks and three fumble recoveries.

Simon, selected with the 250th overall pick in the draft, is touted as an explosive and instinctive linebacker. The 5-10, 235-pounder is expected to compete for a backup role at middle linebacker and add depth to the Redskins' defense.

Simon appeared in 30 games at Tennessee and recorded 237 tackles (139 solo), 5.5 sacks, eight pass deflections and 13.5 tackles for a loss. His college career was cut short by injury, but he turned in a solid senior season, logging 88 stops (40 solo), one sack and five passes defended.

Is he really?
If we're going to let him walk, I hope we do it while he still has time to latch on somewhere where his skills can be put to work...although that would likely be in an industry that requires the use of a hairnet and nametags.

The only 1 that surprises me is Onyenegecha. From what I read, he has lots of potential. The others were very very long shots.

I'm excited about Montgomery, glad he signed. I Don't know much about Golston, any insight?
