I really hope he is okay. M/C accidents can be very scary. As a rider, I really don't like hearing about people getting involved in m/c accidents.

Hopefully, Big Ben wasn't hurt too badly, but this article really leads me to believe that he may have sustained serious injuries.

Roethlisberger went over the handlebars, hit the windshield of another vehicle and then hit the ground.....he was not wearing a helmet.

Hopefully I'm wrong.

According to ESPN2, he is "alert and conscious". Good news.

You know what? I hope he is injured. Teams like the Steelers and Browns pay millions of dollars to guys like Big Ben and Winslow, and one of the few responsiblities they give them is to not participate in dangerous activities. (i.e. riding a motorcycle, ESPECIALLY without a helmet) You would think that these kids would respect their contracts and teams, but no, having a joy ride is often times much more important. If Ben is seriously injured, he should have to pay back whatever money he is scheduled to make this year.

While I agree that it was dumb of Ben R. to ride (especially without a helmet) a motorcycle when he's making a living off his athletic abilities, to wish harm on another human being is worse.

This comment is the most tasteless comment I've read in quite some time. You may be right in that it is unwise for professional athletes to engage in dangerous sports or activities....but to "hope someone is injured" is just not cool in my book.

Yep, major taste failure on this one.

Nevertheless, anybody who goes around on a motorcycle without wearing a helmet is a pillock (old English word!).

Then you are a pillock indeed JH. :nana: I'm not a health and safety freak, but this is one simple thing that can keep your head in one piece, which would seem a desirable outcome of any accident.

(By the way, pillock is a mild insult, and in no way contravenes the rules of decency for this forum!). It belongs in the same category as nitwit, plonker, plank and twonk.

In the article, it says that he doesn't wear a helmet because he considers himself a safe rider. All I can say is: That's why they call it an accident! Besides, that attitude assumes that everyone else is a safe driver, and won't hit you.

Seriously, I know there are a lot of pros and cons about wearing a helmet. Helmet = safety, of course; however, there are also a lot of arguments against mandatory helmet laws.

For an interesting letter sent to a local legislature asking for reconsideration of helmet laws, check out this site.

As for Ben, it looks like he is listed as serious, but stable condition.

Roethlsberger's injuries included a broken jaw, nine-inch laceration on the back of his head, broken teeth and knee damage, ESPN reported, quoting an unnamed police source.

So...um...does...this hurt the Steelers' chances of repeating as chance, or will Roethelisberger be able to bounce back and TAKE A BITE outta the competition??

I see that not only are helmets optional in PA but intelligence also. You'd think a guy who wears a helmet to work every day would be intelligent enough to realize the benefits of one.

I don't understand the logic that it is required by law to wear a seatbelt driving a car but not a helmet when riding a motorcycle.

Big time mistake by Big Ben.

And I was going to say just what CLL said, you would think Ben would realize the importance of a helmet, since he plays football???

I'm sure he will be fine and he'll probably start by like week 3, and hopefully that this time it does send a message to hopefully some of our risk takers (ala Sean Taylor and CP (whether or not they ride bikes)).

Maybe he thinks he wears the football helmet so the coach can tell him what plays to call.

Well, to chime in here, you're talking about two completely different scenarios, aren't you?

At "work", Big Ben has 10-11 guys always trying to kill him each and every offensive play. It's in his best interests to wear a helmet because people are ALWAYS trying to knock his block off.

On a m/c, however, it is assumed that you're in much less frequent danger. Hopefully, cars aren't always around you trying to hit you. Yes, you have to be a defensive driver and be alert to that possibility....but

It's apples and oranges.

Although I think a helmet should be worn when riding a bike I do know that they do not always help.

My first husband was wearing a full helmet w/ face shield (Bell helmet) and when he was in an accident it cracked in half and he died 3 days later from head injuries.

I hope Ben will be okay. He and his family are in my prayers.
