Quarterback Mark Brunell has a small fracture in his left index finger and he is expected to miss 2-3 weeks of off-season work, the team announced on Friday.

Mark Brunell
The injury occurred in a drill during an Organized Team Activity (OTA) practice earlier this week.

The injury could force Brunell, who throws left-handed, to sit out the June 16-18 full squad mini-camp.

With Brunell sidelined, backups Todd Collins and Jason Campbell will likely get the bulk of snaps during the remaining OTA practices and mini-camp.

Since Brunell is a 13-year NFL veteran, his absence from OTA and mini-camp practices should not be an issue.

Brunell and the quarterbacks are in the middle of learning the offense of new associate head coach-offense Al Saunders.

Collins, who played for Saunders when they were in Kansas City from 2001-05, said recently: "Mark is an accomplished quarterback--he's run many of these plays before, but they were called different things. So his adjustment is just going to be the terminology. He knows how to play the position."

Brunell is expected to be fully healthy for the start of training camp in late July.

Brunell is coming off a season in which he helped guide the Redskins to the playoffs for the first time in six years. He started 15-of-16 regular-season games and completed 262-of-454 passes for 3,050 yards, 23 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His QB rating was 85.9.

Campbell should get more snaps for about a month but Mark won't miss much. This can only help Jason. Mark Can't take the snaps and Todd doesn't need them

Brunell is a (word for feline)
He hurt his finger? Give me a break, he's old, we paid too much for him and WHERE WAS HE IN THE PLAYOFFS?!? If we released him tomorrow I don't think there would be much interest, I know darn sure Seattle wouldn't have him the way he stunk it up out there.
Jason Cambell is the QB that should start the 06 season, and that's a sad state of affairs. Here we go again.

Hey Gibbs4Life slow down a bit...I bet you were real happy when Brunell hit Santana for 2 nicely thrown bombs that won the game in Dallas. I also bet you were real happy that he only threw 10 ints last year...sure he might miss a few open guys but at least he doesn't just chuck it up there...Quit your negativity, the guy has a fracture in a finger on his throwing hand, let him rest the regular season is still 3 months away...and Cambell taking more snaps is only a good thing...plus remember Brunell led us to the playoffs a place we haven't been in a while. Also in the playoffs we had ...ummm let me think....one reciever...I don't blame brunell for the playoff loss, I blame our underachieving recievers ...except Moss. Chill its only June.

Well I want him to rest some more. I want him to play as little as possible throughout the year and him start every game. That'll mean we are kicking some butt and Campbell is getting put in for cleanup.

But honestly, this isn't a bad thing. Brunell can rest his legs a bit and Campbell will get some extra work with the first team. I'm not worried about this at all unless it turns into a Brett Favre Thumb issue.

Not only that, but didn't Brunell tweak his knee in the second Giants game?

Just so there is no confusion, Ive never wanted to sail the Brunell ship!!!!

I'm not jumping ship, I trust Joe Gibbs too much to ever do that, I'll watch and pull for Mark in every game this season when he's our starter, I'm just saying if we have a weakness its QB, I'm hoping Jason Cambell is the next Doug Williams or even better a Peyton Manning without the growing pain season, yet still he is unproven.

I admit Brunell to Moss twice against the cowpies gives Mark some grace for a spell but that only lasts untill the next divisional game, I truly hate the cowboys and the giants and the eagles and I want us to sweep the East, because we can, I apologize for my negative post, This is Our Year whether its MB or Cambell or even Collins, besides the QB our only other question mark on offense is Al Saunders...I mean I know he COORDINATED the no.1 offense in the league last season but he really had all the horses, which he has here, but Trent Green is a better QB than MB I don't think there's any question, I hope Saunders works out, can't wait for pre-season.

Say this type of injury happened during the regular season.
Could Brunell have played though this injury?
Or would he still need 1 or 2 weeks.

A good QB will make the hard throws and get the balls to his recievers - and make something happen when the play breaks down. He hurt the team with so many poorly thrown balls. The only good thing to say there is that he had so few interceptions.

Yes - we made it to the playoffs with Brunell. How much further would we have made it if he was on target more often?

Giving Brunell some time to rest and Jason to get snaps, can only be a GOOD thing. We have a long time till gametime.

Mark Brunell didn't do any worse than Peyton Manning last year...

Im still trying to figure out how people blame the SEA soley on Mark.

A little more on the injury:

Redskins | Brunell injured his hand on helmet of defensive player
Fri, 2 Jun 2006 22:15:39 -0700

Ryan O'Halloran, of the Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins QB Mark Brunell (finger) injured his hand when he hit the helmet of a defensive player while delivering a pass. Brunell said he will be ready for the start of training camp and that he's not concerned at all about the injury. The injury will not require surgery and is the first such injury in his football career. QBs Jason Campbell and Todd Collins will take the majority of snaps during the final two weeks of OTAs and three-day minicamp.

This can only help Campbell and will not hurt Brunell - these are 2 positives.

Campbell is not ready to be Gibbs QB and Brunell's experience far outweighs any superior talent of a young QB. Lombardi and Gibbs both believe having an experienced less talented QB was far preferrable to a superior talent with less leadership qualities.

Cambell will be a very good QB (maybe) but Brunell will get this team back into the playoffs.

Exactly. IF his injury heals accordingly then its a win/win situation. The area Brunell is weakest in is the terminology. As long as his brain isn't fractured his progression wont stop.

You could argue that he needs to get the timing down but look how well he and Santana did in one year. He's a vet and those minor things don't matter as much with him.

Dont forget that they have already said that Brunell has been connecting well with the new receivers so he's got the timeing down already.

Brunell showed last year that he can produce with a 1st year WR. It should be EVEN easier because he'll see a lot more single coverages instead of what happened to S. Moss.
