SB XVIII Skins practice bugged

After reading the wikipedia article on the Tuna, I looked up Joe Gibbs':

The following season (1983), Gibbs' surprising success continued and the Redskins once again won an NFC Championship, advancing to Super Bowl XVIII. The Redskins were an overwhelming favorite going into the game, but proved overconfident, collapsing and being crushed by the Los Angeles Raiders 38-9. Gibbs cried conspiracy in private, believing his team may have been bugged during practice the week of practice before the Super Bowl.
I have never heard of this before. Could anyone confirmed this?
That was the most devastating loss I've ever experience as a Skins fan.

I don't specifically remember, but it is absolutely true that Gibbs is totally paranoid about security and secrecy. I would not be at all surprized to find that this is fact.

it wouldn,t either to tell you the truth.
knowing how joe likes to do things.
i still wonder today what really happened in that superbowl myself.kinda fishy.

The Skins had played the Raiders earlier in the year. Gibbs pulled a victory out of his hat when he called a screen to Joe Washington, which he promptly took to the house.
Fast forward to Super Bowl XXIII. Towards the end of the first half, the Redskins take over on a Raiders punt to the 12. With everyone else expecting Gibbs to either run out the clock or send the ball deep down field, the Raiders DC, Carlie Sumner, recognizes Rocket Right, Screen Left formation, the formation from that earlier screen pass was run. He pulls Matt Millen. He inserts Jack Squirek, who is taller, and faster, with the assignement to cover Washington 1:1. Theisman never saw him. 12 yards later, the Raiders have a touchdown off of Suirek's interception.
That sure didn't help.

That regular season game was the best Redskins comeback victory that I ever saw... That is, until week two last season.

Oh yeah... it was fantastic, and outdone only by the destruction of the Cowboys at the end of their Ring of Fame homecoming.

Between Gibbs and Allen, it's a wonder anybody was allowed to know that there was a football team playing out of RFK. Old George used to think that there were spies in the neighboring trees tall enough to see over the fields.

I am not going to argue. I am not going to "prove" anything.
I knew about the story. It is not based on suspicion or one opinion alone. It was based initially on the post-analysis of several plays. And then later on there appears to have been some talk from different sides on this issue.
Nothing was investigated by the league. Consequently, nothing was proven.
Joe did not make much more out of this because in the absence of proof, he did not want to be perceived as a sore looser. But he let a few people know and he got some stories about it.
Why is anybody surprised about sports espionage? It happens ALL the time to one degree or another.

All the Wikipedia entry does is claim that Joe Gibbs believed that practices may have been rigged (and that he kept that relatively quiet). Are you doubting that it actually happened or that Joe Gibbs thought that it may have happened?

i am doubting that it actually happened according to wikipedia...i don't doubt that there's a possibility that it happened, i'd just rather see it on a more credible site, one that is not able to be edited by anyone on the face of this earth.

What makes me the maddest about SB XVIII is that you always read about how the 'Skins were totally dominated on that day. Not true. I mean the Raiders scored 21 points off a blocked punt for a TD, a five yard interception return for a TD, and Marcus Allen's 74 yard broken play TD, where he should have been dropped for a seven yard loss. The meat of the game was a 17-9 (we had an extra point blocked) victory for the Raiders. Were we outplayed? Most definitely, but we were not dominated. One TD was all that really separated us, and we were playing catch-up the entire day. Thankfully, we broke most of those records in SB XXII.

Regardless, it was painful to sit through that game. As was already mentioned by others, the 'skins
beat the hated Raiders in the regular season that year, so I was
not ready for 38-9. The Raiders sure looked pretty dominating that game, unfortuntely.

Not quite as paranoid as George Allen. When RP was first constructed during Dallas week Allen had his turk search the woods and the entire area around RP for spies.

This is why I asked in the first place: wikipedia never claims that the tampering happened. (Although I suppose that you could edit it to say that it did).

I remember being so confident before the game. My friend Dave-from-Oxon-Hill, they only other person who could distinguish Herbie Plews from Reno Bertoia, gathered a bunch of us at an apartment that had a color TV with cable. Wow. Double wow, if you've ever tried to watch TV in Manhattan using an antenna.
We had arm-loads of beer and pretzels, and I had to tell Redskin Dan v1978, my five-year-old, that he couldn't come along to an adult drinking bash. He was heartbroken, especially because he had just begun to understand about the Redskins. The year before he had not quite understood why I was jumping and screaming when Riggins broke free.
We circled the TV. We watched. We waited for the Diesel to start, and we saw that blocked kick. Argh. Otis Wonsley missed the block, right? Then the interception TD on the Rocket Screen.
The Redskins started the second half by stomping fown the field, just like normal. It felt like maybe things were falling into place, and then, kaboom.
Personally, I thought some of the players seemed flat. Whether they were run down from the season, or from party-ing before the game, I don't know. But I've always thought that the Skins just looked unready that day.
And little Dan gave me a hug when I got home. We waited, and watched SB 22 together. That was different.
