Makes me wonder if GW doesn't like the young dbacks he has in camp.

We only had 5 safeties on roster. I guess we shouldn't be too surprised that we added a 6th. The Martz signing is harder to figure. We had 15 OL's on roster before. I don't see any mention of who was cut to make room for them.

I think GW has a thing for safeties......I think he wants to send head hunter safety guys on blitzes...Can't have enough quality DBs though for sure.

There is a limit. The final roster limit is 53. Probably 9 will be DB's. My guess is 4 safeties & 5 CB's but it could be the other way around. Archeleta & Taylor are fixtures, Prilou is highly probably. What I've read about Doughty is very positive. While he doesn't have great st line speed, he really smoked the 3 cone. He's universally described as smart & agressive. I think he'll stick. Burns & Wilson will be in the mix competing for the 9th DB spot.

I think Dennard Wilson was signed as a FA in 2004, by the Redskins, and was doing well until he got hurt. I guess he's healthy so it's worth giving him a tryout.

Redskins Sign DB Wilson, OL Martz
By Gary Fitzgerald
Redskins.com
May 30, 2006
The Redskins have signed a pair of first-year players in defensive back Dennard Wilson and offensive lineman Daniel Martz, the team announced on Tuesday.
Wilson, who played his college ball at Maryland, begins his second stint with the Redskins. He was among the players who tried out for the Redskins during the team's Rookie Camp on May 5-7.
Dennard Wilson
Wilson adds to the team's depth at safety, joining starters Sean Taylor and Adam Archuleta and backups Pierson Prioleau, Curry Burns and rookie draft pick Reed Doughty.
If Wilson earns a spot on the final roster or practice squad, it would certainly be one of the great stories to come out of training camp.
The 5-10, 189-pound safety originally signed with the team in April 2004, but he suffered a knee injury on the first day of training camp and was placed on injured reserve, ending his rookie campaign.
Wilson was released by the Redskins shortly after the 2004 season. Since that time, he has helped coach at his high school [DeMatha Catholic in Hyattsville, Md.] while working out and keeping his NFL dream alive.
Martz was listed as a center for the Cologne Centurions in NFL Europe last season. He had earned a roster spot on Cologne as a free agent.
Martz, 6-3 and 287 pounds, played his college ball at Alabama from 2001-04. He played mostly right guard for the Crimson Tide. He was not selected in the 2005 NFL Draft.
Wilson better be fast and athletic because he is not a massive player. There are very strong receivers these days in the NFL. If you think about the size of the WRs from Phoenix or Cincinati, he might be small. They are giving him a chance for competition and they like a good number of players in camp.
I do not feel that Martz really has much of achance but I would like to be proven wrong. I have not seen him play in NFL Europe or the Crimson Tide.

Prioleau is listed as 5' 11" & 188#. Clark is not that big & played well for us last yr. I still think he will be competing for the last DB spot with Burns, Morton, Patterson & others.

Martz was a very average player until his senior season. He worked hard in the offseason and took advantage of his opportunity to become a starter at OG. He was a very good run blocker his last season at Alabama. I'm kind of surprised that the Skins signed him but I'll be pulling for him to make the team. Maybe Buges sees a diamond in the rough.

Clark missed important tackles last year. I remember that killer run by D. Tomlinson. Who missed the last tackle? R. Clark did. Prioleau is a backup in my view.
Starters:
A. Archuleta 6-0 223
S. Taylor 6-2 231
His competition this year in the team:
D. Reed 6-1 210
B. Curry 6-0 203
He has more the size of a CB than a safety. But again, size is not all that matters.

Every player misses tackles sometimes. I agree Prioleau is a back up, but Wilson will be if he makes the team. My guess is that neither Burns nor Wilson will make the 53 man roster.

Rogers only has a inch and ten pounds on him, Ade Jimoh is 2 inches taller but only a pound heavier. I'll wait to see what he can do on the field.
He's done enough to be signed TWICE
Here is the size of all of our CB...
Springs, Shawn 6'0 204
Onyenegecha, Chijioke 6'1 215
Wright, Kenny 6'1 207
Morton, Christian 6'0 188
Jimoh, Ade 6'1 190
Williams, Aric 5'11 187
Eubanks, John 5'10 173
Hawkins, Chris 5'10 183
Patterson, Dimitri 5'11 196
Rogers, Carlos 5'11 199
Burns, Curry 6'0 203
Wilson, Dennard 5'10 189

... and if he was a CB, that would be fine. But he is listed as a SAFETY.
Again, size is only part of the equation.

Wilson is a DB because he plays both Safety and Corner, Martz plays center and guard.
Prioleau, Pierson 5'11 188
Taylor, Sean 6'2 231
Doughty, Reed 6'1 210
Archuleta, Adam 6'0 223
Comparing anyone to Taylor that has never played a down would be just plain wrong and it works in Wilson's favor so again he is within 2 inches of every saftey on the team and doesn't give up much weight. It's all about what he may be able to do in GW's scheme. They liked what thay saw two years ago and they may still see the same thing. I really don't think anyone is looking at his size. Beside that's the kock on our recieveing corp

Doesn't give up much weight?
difference
Wilson 189
Taylor 231 42#
Archuleta 223 34#
Doughty 210 21#

Redskins | Contract update: D. Wilson
Wed, 31 May 2006 15:58:37 -0700
Washington Redskins CB Dennard Wilson's two-year contract included base salaries of $275,000 (2006) and $360,000 (2007).
The Skins must think more highly of Wilson with the 2 year contract when compared to Martz's 1 year contract.

I think they are looking for competition or an upgrade to Prioleau. Just a thought.
