The expensive acquisitions of talented receivers Antwaan Randle El and Brandon Lloyd will surely help separate the Redskins, but Saunders might wind up being Washington's best offseason addition.

I am really hoping that our players are able to pick up Saunders' offense quickly and are able to execute it flawlessly by the beginning of the season. Any time you bring in a new offensive system, there's usually a "break in" period. I'm hoping ours isn't too long.

"When you work against a defense for the first time, you're a little dubious about what the results will be, but I couldn't be more pleased about the practice we had today," said Saunders, who called 42 pass plays and will add 20 to 50 more during each of the next 11 days before focusing the final two OTA sessions on short-yardage and goal-line situations.
So they'll have 60-90
passing plays to memorize, and that's before they even add the running plays?!? Amazing.

I suspect that they will have base plays - but each play will have variations - hence the large number of plays. For example, if they have 3 plays, with 3 different hot reads with 3 different depths (short, medium, long) then you'd have 27 different possibilities.

I'm excited," said Chris

ey, who has moved from H-back to tight end.
guess

eys a TE, so we'll see how he fits in that role, and not the H-Back role

That playbook is worth its considerable weight in gold. This is going to be really interesting. I am as excited as I have ever been since Joe came back.
By the way:
The Redskins' rookie pool for their six draft picks and their 15 rookie free agents is $2.24 million, leaving about $1.5 million to spend in the post-June 1 free agent market and for an injured reserve fund.
I say we have a reserve of over a million to find somebody that might become available between now and the final roster announcement. What position? I do not really know.

I expected

ey to move to TE since Saunders doesn't use an HB.

He'll be better that he was last year. Fauria or Sellers at the opposite TE in the twin TE set. or

ey & Sellers in the traditional 2 back set. Shift, motion.... touch down! This O will be able to run or pass in a variaty of packages & formations. As long as the line does it's job we should see some great stuff out of our O, in turn making our D even better!

I was responding to notwhy26. Also many "experts" said we would pick a TE in the 2nd round.

Wait a minute, re-read that quote:
will add 20 to 50 more during each of the next 11 days
So that seems to say we'll be adding 35 passing plays every day for eleven days. We're talking about a
minimum of
400 passing plays if that is true!!!

That can't be true. There can't be that many plays in the playbook, nobody could keep them straight. He may be refering to total outcomes, on each pass play, there are several options, possibly 3-4 different receivers in the pattern. Sometimes receivers may have options on their routes, the QB may be forced to roll out, etc.

I would bet it is true....Saunders has stated in interviews that he likes to have 200 to 300 plays for a sunday game. He stated that he never uses the same plays two games in a row. That would mean close to 400 to 600 plays in a play book. If they only use 20 to 40 plays the whole game because they are working then you can imagine how he might not use the same plays all year long. always mixing it up.

They can't run 200-300 plays in a game. They will have maybe 50-60 offensive snaps. Based on not using the same play twice in 2 weeks, that would mean 120 plays in the playbook min. If he has 300 plays ready for a givgame & runs 60, he would "only" need 360 in his playbook.

Also, were I an OC (and we should be thankful I am not) and were I talking to the press about my offense, I would ... aim high ... when discussing the total number of potential plays.

There have been many reports that Saunders never runs the same play twice over a four week span. That means he must have 300 at a bare minimum.

My guess is that he exagerates for the "benefit" of rival coaches.

Does that mean if CP breaks one for 80 yards Al won't run the play again for a month

No one they call him a guru

Oh he'll run it again - but from a different formation for a different look to the defense.

Maybe if you multiply the # of formations by the # of plays by the # of options in a given play you get the numbers we're talking about.

The plan is to have the defense force a turnover every time they hit the field (this will give the O more opportunities). The Special Teams will not be returning kicks (we'll be stepping out at the one to give the offense more field to work with). All positions players have agreed to "fall down" after gains of more than 17 yards.
Critics are saying Saunders won't have enough plays to get halfway through the season before his offense becomes outdated and predictable.

ESPN is already point to the move to bring in Al Saunders has the final pin in the coffin of the Gibbs II
