Moves that got us back to contention

what do u all think, I know some of these r the obvious.
Trades- Coles for Moss. Do I really have to explain this
Baily and a 2nd rd. pick for Portis- Even though I didn't want Portis because (I thought he was good), just wouldn't fit into the system, I was dead wrong about him not fitting into the system, in the first year he didn't with his 3.8 yp. per carry. But he gained some weight worked really hard and is now great for the system. Even though Portis has some flaws short ydg. running, he is explosive and a great leader and our D is fine without Chump Baily. Portis plays hard everydown even when he isn't geting the ball, if u don't believe me ask Shelton Quarles and Al Wilson.
Gardner for pick- NOthing in return but getting rid of him was just a great move.
3rd round pick for Brunell- I was a RAmsey fan think he will do well if given a full season to start, but Mark lead us to the playoffs.
Add more if u like
Signings
Casy- Solidfied our line
Marcus- great Lb unquestioned leader
Springs- More than a replacement, he brought something to the table Baily couldn't do to save his life, blitz.
Griffin- You can notice the diffrence when he is hurt.
Salave- Cheap, than resigned him, teamed with Griffin no one can run on us.
Danials- Rough first year but came on strong this year and now solified himself as a starter.
Resigning Lemar Marshal- Lead the team in tackels and ints. Anotonio who(I still Antonio is good, I just think Leamar is better and CHEAPER)
Draft
Chris Cooley- one of the best Te's in football now.
Taylor- Mean, agressive, fearles, and is a headhunter wr's r terrified of.
Released players
Trotter- Agreed with this move completely, slow and one dimensional player.
Armstead- His age showed
Smoot- Boat scandel, my friend that lives in Minesota said he was good except when covering Steve Smith, but were fine without him and not wroth the money he wanted. Not a no.1 corner, good no.2 though.
Pierce- Lemar was better and cheaper. He was still good for the Giants, until he got hurt.
Bruce Smith- Distraction, old, I think whoever we hired was going to cut him anyway. I just don't like him so I put him up here.

Our problems were:

Dan Snyder
Dan Smyder
Poor coaching

What solved our problems?
Joe Gibbs

Joe removed Snyder from the helm and brought back coaching. The players we had weren't the problem as much as the lack of coaching was. Those guys had no direction.

Well I guess we can say hiring Gibbs but I was talking about players. Most of the leaders on the team though weren't on the team before hand. Portis, Moss, Griffin, Washington, Springs, Taylor, Cooley. We had talent problems too.

The only mistake that this FO has made in the last two years was Mike Barrow and that was because of a career ending injury.

In fact, if you look at the list of guys we've brought in that was basically our only move that hasn't been an incredible success.

We've added two Pro Bowlers, Washington and Moss, and four guys who should have been, Portis, Griffin, Brunell, and Cooley. Just add in Rogers, Taylor, Salave'a, Daniels, ... and it quickly becomes clear that over the last two years this has unquestionably been THE BEST FO in football!

The FO the last two year has done a very good job with the free agent moves that they have made and with trades. However, if were are going to become a consistent contenders then the FO is going to have to start doing a much better job in the draft. I'm not talking about drafting guys like Taylor, which isn't exactly rocket science. I'm talking about finding diamonds in the rough on the second day of the draft. That is how teams like the Patriots have been able to put a consistant winner on the field during the past 5 seasons. As good as our moves have been in free agency, I still think that the FO doesn't value draft picks enough and is too willing to give them away.

I agree we need to find more second day talent. Mcune looks good, Nemo might have some potiential. It might be to early to tell with our second day drafting those guys because it normally takes them a couple of years to devolop.

Dan Synder is a great owner. He is willing to do anything to get the Skins to the top. Just be thankfull he is not like other owners who only care about attendance and He is also willing to open his wallet to get his team to the top.

Next to the coaching staff, I think bringing in guys like Marcus Washington, Shawn Springs, and Clinton Portis have directly been the reason that the Redskins have improved. Guys who are willing to take control of the team and go the extra mile. Guys follow leaders and thats what these guys are.

I think that Marcus Washington doesn't get the credit he deserves. I have been watching the 90 programs that NFL Network aired last week. The "Game of the Week" showed how many impact plays Marcus made in crutial moments in games. He's a guy that I want to be on the team for years.

After reviewing these tapes, he's my favorite player on the team. Hands down.

I think you guys are misguided. If you follow any sports writers, you would know that the Redskins are not in contention for anything and never make any good moves ever. Also we are going to be in salary cap hell sometime soon.

You are the one misguided or you missed it... It was widely reported that that 2006 would be the year that the Skins would go into cap hell. Nothing could have prevented it.

Which brings me to the subject of this thread. What's the best move the Redskins have made to get back into contention?

I'd go with bringing back Joe Gibbs. Who else can coach a team with 20 rookies and almost know returning starters? I say "the Danny" was being proactive when he hired Gibbs (he signs the contracts, he knew 2006 would get here soon).

John Manfreda said he wasn't including the coaching staff so Coach Gibbs would be a great answer but not what he's looking for. How about Gibbs boss, the Guy in charge of football operation has made a great contribution to getting us back to where we are. He's the guy that has taken the reigns from "the Danny" but has let him maintain his free spending ways. He got here at the same time that Coach Gibbs did, in fact it's hard to tell who game 1st, but not many executives could handle such a task. It wasn't hard because he quickly saw the fast approching 2006 season also. John Manfreda was talking about players, however I can't pin-point 1 player or even a group of players at this point because what we are watching is a work in progress.

Before we had a PFO we had "the Danny" as the Owner and Pres. with Vinny C. next as VP of Football Ops ( no buffer between a fan and a guy from ESPN) as fans we were doomed from the start, but we knew "the Danny" was one of us - so there was HOPE.

The President of Football Operations signed on, made sure Gibbs got the staff that he wanted and then went and got the players that John Manfreda wants named.

Brunell and Portis got here with Gibbs, but both came after the FOP brought in Gregg Williams and spent the a Top 10 pick on a defensive player back to back years. Mark and Clinton were big news but Marcus Washington and Corny donned the B&G for the 1st time the same day all the afore mentioned did. At the same time Mr. President let guys go like Champ, AP, Smooty, and others. to his credit they all wanted more money and none were missed because names like Springs (same # ) Lemar Marshall and C. Rogers could be considered upgrades.

This same President of Football Operations had the foresight to understand this oncoming cap hell in 2006 and planned for it. He dumped salaries and put in a pay scale (one that still allowed "the Danny" to do his thing.... Eric is pissed most of the time though). He made this public after we lost guys like Smoot (we wouldn't pay him much more than what Springs was making) or some FA thet came in but signed elsewhere (something that almost never happened before we got a REAL PoFO. That told guys that had made a name for themselves but were now looking for a gravy train, that the train no longer ran throug the beltway area. So with no huge (sometimes outragious sallaries and taking dead cap hits prior to 2006, the Pres was able to draft his QB of the future a year early, got a wideout in the third round of this years draft (after signing a long term deal the cap hit is less than what it would have been had he played the old one out). Considering we ARE in cap hell you CANT name a player because most are rookies. The PFO is the man he's got vets like Cooley, Taylor, Nemo, McCune, and Rodgers to help out Campbell with all these new guys that will be playing for us this year. Rookies we've never heard of like Randle El, Carter, some cat name Artulete (I didn't even spell it right, but I heard is first name is Adam). We picked of a few other guys but most of or starters are projected to be selected on Sunday so I'll wait until then, when the group of players are larger and I can project which of the 20 rookie will be the starters for 2006, and just maybe the guy to pull us out of our turmoil.

I'm not being sarcastic, we really in cap hell. Come the middle of the summer you will all come out of your slumbers and realize it was all just a dream. We are going to make due with what we have and there is no way we can improve on what was done last year. Many will be heartbroken and carry sigs like "Don't watch the 4 letter network". The truth is your sarcasm is reality you all just don't know it yet.

Now in the 3rd year under Gibbs more improvenment is on the way.
