Terps overcome big deficit, top Duke in OT for first title
BOSTON (AP) -- Overtime belongs to Maryland. So does the NCAA championship.
Freshman Kristi Toliver hit a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to cap a 13-point comeback, then made two free throws with 35 seconds left in overtime Tuesday night to give the Terrapins their first NCAA women's basketball title with a 78-75 victory over Duke.
Maryland (34-4) is 6-0 in overtime games this season -- the first five on the road and the last in the championship to complete the second-largest comeback in a women's final. It was the first time the title was determined in overtime since Tennessee beat Virginia in 1991.
The Maryland players stormed the court twice -- once after Toliver's basket forced overtime and again when Blue Devils guard Jessica Foley's desperation, well-covered 3-point attempt nicked the front of the rim at the overtime buzzer.
Piling up on the court, hugging and bumping chests, the Terrapins reveled in the youth that had been the biggest doubt surrounding them coming into the tournament.
Rest of the story. . .
Now we all know which UMD basketball team we should have been watching all season. . .
Congratulations, lady Terps. A gutsy game to finish a gutsy season. Go Terps!

That was easily the best basketball game I have seen all year.
Kudos to Brenda Frese, Kristi Tolliver, Crystal Langhorne, Laura Harper, Shay Doron, Marissa Coleman and all the other players. The scary part, is the whole team will be back next year, and the year after everyone but Shay Doron will be back.
Can you say Dynasty in the making?

Are you freaking kidding me?? Those women played their butts off against gigantic women that could kick your butt from here to California and back. They deserve praise and if because they are 'women' you cannot give them as much credit as you would give a men's team then perhaps you have issues that go way beyond message board ettiquite.

Honestly, the womens teams played just as hard, if not harder, than the mens teams.
I've said for months that the MD girls team could beat the crap out of MD's mens team.
These girls deserved it. They were the only team to beat NC this year (and did it twice) and beat DUKE for the Championship.
Rock on ladies!

I caught the last 8 minutes of the games (not including OT) and I was shocked and what a great game it was. Im glad I was able to witness such a great game.
Tolivers 3 pointer for the tie reminded me of Juan Dixons game winning shot so much. She's the new MJ with that fadeaway of hers.

Jake -- I absolutely enjoyed the game last night -- but don't get carried away, the lady terps can NOT beat the men -- even though the men underachieved the past two years.
Punu - who do you root for -- George Mason? They had a super Cinderalla ride this year but -- that wagon broke down and don't expect it to get reved up again anytime soon.
The lady Terps have some super players. I really like their coach too, she's only 35 years old. PLUS -- they beat UNC and Duke within 3 days!! Gotta love that!

Huge UVA fan for Lacrosse
I'd root for UNC in bball but if Mason is in the Big Dance I'm all about them
And every other sport I'd guess I have to go with UVA.

Let's just say I'd put my money on the women's team. The guys team just plain sucked this year. It was sad.
