Former CFLer tackling the Taliban

KANDAHAR—Pte. Nigel Williams has a no-bull message for disenfranchised black youth in Toronto who think it's cool to pack heat and troll with gangs.

"If you like guns, come to us, we'll teach you how to handle them properly.

"If you're looking for respect, come to us.

"If you want to be a big man, come to us."

Us is the Canadian Forces. But Williams is no mere recruiter.

He's a nine-year veteran of the Canadian Football League, plus one year in the NFL with the Washington Redskins. And, at the moment, bodyguard muscle — with a C7 rifle — to Lt.-Col. Ian Hope, battle group commander of Task Force Orion, which is the combat component of Task Force Afghanistan, those 2,200 Canadian troops now in-country.

Great Story. What year did he play for the Redskins?

He played in the late 90's.

I remember him because he always cussed out loud whenever he missed a pass during practice.

 Wow, I really wish him all the best of luck while in battle.

Great story. Hopefully he gets his wish on being a officer.
