New Rules

There also were more substantive rules changes on the final day of the three-day owners meetings, although nothing as flashy as the ban on demonstrations:

They included:

- Allowing down-by-contact calls to be reviewed by replay to determine if the ball came out before the ball carrier was down, and who recovered it. In the past, those plays were not reviewable when officials ruled the whistle had ended the play.

- Prohibiting pass rushers from hitting a passer in the knee or below unless they are blocked into him. The officiating department showed low hits that caused serious injuries to Cincinnati's Palmer, Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger and Tampa Bay's Brian Griese, although in all cases, those would not draw penalties because the rushers were blocked in such a way that they could not avoid the hits.

- Toughening the horse-collar rule enacted last season. It now bans tacklers from taking down ball carriers from the rear by tugging inside their jerseys. Last year's rule required that the tackler's hand got inside the runner's shoulder pads. Only two horse-collars were called in 2005 and the officiating department said one was an incorrect call.

- Prohibiting defensive players from lining up directly over center on field-goal and extra-point attempts to avoid injuries to long snappers.

- The teams rejected a proposal aimed at cutting down illegal-procedure penalties by eliminating such calls on players flanked outside the line of scrimmage who flinch without the defense reacting. A flinch will remain a 5-yard penalty.

The meetings adjourned with little action on finding a successor to commissioner Paul Tagliabue, who announced his retirement a week ago.

We could have had something to do with the new Rule highlighted in yellow based on our experience last season

Bah... there probably isn't a football fan on the planet that hasn't been burnt by it... it was becoing epidemic.

... and it's a great rule change in my opinion.

And go figure... they had to expand the horse collar rule to account for Roy Williams' new preferred method of tackling everyone from behind. Well... not everyone...

:-"

I don't know why I never noticed before, but Williams seems to be pointing at moss' feet as if to say, 'wow those are going fast'

... another great rule change... actually I saw quite a few guys were just grabbing the jerseys and yanking the ball carrier down, instead of the 'collar'... either way... it usually results in an injury of some degree.

If you look carefully you can see while he's point he seems to be smiling like an idiot.

Yeah, Williams can hit hard, but has to drag people down from behind when he gets burned.

The idea that Cowboys fans think he is better than Taylor is about the biggest load of nonsense I have ever heard.

Taylor can stop the run, beat even the best of recievers on jump balls, cover anyone and strike fear into some of the biggest recievers in the league (TO in particular).

Williams can... hit people.

Taylor is bigger, faster, can jump higher, hit harder, and has better awareness than Williams...

Oh yeah, and I love Sean Taylor.

I 100% agree with that down-by-contact rule change.

I also 100% agree that BH's Williams picture is the best I've seen in quite a while.

The horse-co;;ar rule, now expended to jerseys, takes the game away from Williams. He relied on that kind of tackle to punish receivers that he could get hold on to from behind.

I like the Rule changes. I also like the regulation against some types of TD celebrations. The TD is more important than the celebration. Then again, that is why I am an Art Monk fan.

He can only get one hand on them with that blazzing speed of his. Now once they blow by him they are gone. I think he'll continue to do it because it truely is his only option

NFL = No Fun League more and more every year.

First they banned team/group celebrations because it took away from whatever and took up too much time. I went along with that, but the player actually had personalities and other ideas. Chad and TO were getting good at it, CP was a dark horse but was gaining. Now they can't even do that. I'm glad we have a band

I think we ought to export the bulk of RiC's initial post to Football 101.
Nice find, big man.
