Finally completing a trade that had been rumored for weeks, the New York Jets on Friday afternoon acquired quarterback Patrick Ramsey from the Washington Redskins for a sixth-round choice in the 2006 draft, ESPN.com has learned.

Given the uncertainty over the availability of Chad Pennington, who is rehabilitating from a second rotator cuff surgery five months ago, the Jets considered a variety of options for bolstering their quarterback depth chart. As recently as earlier Friday, the Jets were still in discussions about a trade that would have brought them Falcons backup quarterback Matt Schaub in a deal that would have sent three-time Pro Bowl defensive end John Abraham to Atlanta.

The Jets and Falcons continued on Friday to explore other formulas for completing an Abraham trade.

Ramsey, the Redskins' first-round pick in the 2002 draft, but relegated to reserve status behind Mark Brunell for all but one game in '05, had been sought by several other teams as well. He met last week with Jets officials, including first-year head coach Eric Mangini, but also visited with Tampa Bay officials and was being pursued by Cincinnati. The Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions also demonstrated interest.

A few weeks ago, Washington was said to be seeking a second- or third-round pick in return for Ramsey, but the Redskins subsequently reduced their asking price. The Jets, until Friday, has been offering a No. 7 draft choice for Ramsey.

New York coaches feel confident, after doing extended research on Ramsey, that he is a starting-caliber quarterback in the league. If Pennington is unable to play at the outset of the season, Ramsey likely will be the starter. The Jets could still use the fourth overall choice in the first round to select a quarterback, but adding Ramsey eliminates the urgency to do so and provides New York more flexibility in the lottery.

Ramsey, 27, has a 10-14 record as a starter. He has completed 480 of 861 passes for 5,649 yards with 34 touchdown passes, 29 interceptions and a 75.0 quarterback rating.

A year or two ago, when it became obvious that coach Joe Gibbs' staff wasn't enamored of Ramsey, the Redskins would almost certainly have commanded a higher price for the former Tulane star. But Washington failed to pull the trigger on a deal, when Sexton could have brought them several suitors. Gibbs sold Ramsey on the notion he would compete for the starting job, then went out and invested a 2005 first-round pick on Auburn quarterback Jason Campbell.

Ramsey started the '05 season opener, was pulled in favor of Brunell at halftime, and didn't log another start the rest of the season. The poor handling of the situation contributed to the fact that Washington had to settle for far less in Friday's trade. Even at a reduced rate, though the Redskins likely had to deal Ramsey or release him, since he had finally become frustrated by his status. The Redskins also needed the salary cap space that Ramsey's departure gives them.

The Jets inherit Ramsey's existing contract, which has just one season remaining, at a base salary of $1.668 million for 2006

I think it's a win-win situation anyway. The jets are our farm team, so we might see him in camp down the road, once he becomes a savvy vet.

Ill be sick if he goes there and blows it up and we got lesser value for him. i mean a 6th is better than nothing but getting rid of him last year would have given us a 1 or 2. we should have got a conditional pick like 3rd or 4th round next year too if he starts.

I wish there was a conditional pick, but whatever, just glad this is over with.

Good Luck Patrick.
Hopefully they draft D'Brick for you.

You think they were just waiting to St. Patrick's day to trade him?

You do realize that if Patrick would not have been here last season, we might not have made the playoffs, right? After all, would you have felt confident with a rookie replacing Brunell in the game against the Gints?

Sure, we missed out on an opportunity to get a higher pick this year, but you should consider the fact that we are entering the draft as a playoff team for the first time in ages. Our FA signings have been solid, and we are the talk of the NFL, for legitimate reasons this time.

This is ok. The Jets will probably draft Ferguson to be their starting and probable Pro Bowl LOT. But that team has a lot of holes and we don't. I wish Patrick all the best. He now has a chance to prove himself.

Did you all forget that the old qb from New Orleans got released yesterday and Harrington is being released also. Be glad we didn't do anything.

We screwed ourselves on this one. He never had a chance to develop and prove himself as a starting QB. We obviously don't think he has any potential, so why would we expect other teams to?

only a 6th rounder, I guess Gibbs really did want to get rid of him

I'm glad he went to a team that it seems like he has a pretty good chance to be the starter. Ramsey is a good QB and hopefully the Jets will surround him with some quality players. He has the tools and the confidence to elevate his status to being a very good QB. This change of scenery can only help.

Ramsey has shown that he is a quality athlete and person and I hope he gets the Jets to the playoffs.

Other organizations way over value draft picks in my opinion.

Good Luck Ramsey!

It's ok. We'll probably package that 6th and another pick from next year and trade for a WLB.

I really think Gibbs wants Ramsey to be successful. And I also think he wanted to give Ramsey that chance by being flexible on the draft pick in the trade.

Ramsey was insurance last year. Insurance is something you have to have and hope you don't need it.

PRam did a good job when called on during the season.

We got the short end of the trade here. We should have gotten more.

I wish him the best (except when playing us). He is a class act!

Redskins.com is reporting that it is an undisclosed draft pick.
Maybe it is not a 6th?
