Two other things made the Saunders offense unique:
Perhaps more than any team in football, the Chiefs used pre-snap shifting and motion by players to create mismatches, particularly for Gonzalez, who always draws extra attention from linebackers and safeties. It wasn't unusual for the Chiefs to be snapping the football as the defense still adjusted to the last shift or motion....
That is Gibbs: relatively few plays masked by shift, shift, shift before the snap.
In fact, the writer exaggerated the differences. Gibbs was a bombs-away guy before Art Monk got hurt at the end of the '82 season. They ran the Riggo-drills because Monk was had a broken toe, and Joe Washington had hurt his leg. Generally, they were pretty balanced. Watch Q2 of SB 22 for an example.

I am giddy with anticipation. I foresee Campbell battling Brunell hard for the starting job. Despite the fact that we just signed Todd Collins as the #2. The new offense, I think, will make our QB (whomever it is) more accurate and will take pressure off of him by running Portis more and giving him more holes to choose from.
I hope that Saunders and Gibbs has the offense already looking at the playbooks and getting ready to go. It's March but I am for football again.
Thank god for the NFL Network.....

Absolutely... In the 83 season, the Redskins scored 541 points, which was the record until 1998, when Minnesota scored 556. You don't rip off points like that playing ball control. Gibbs puts together explosive offensive teams, that can manage the clock. Everyone thinks of the Riggo Drill when they remember the Gibbs teams of the 80's... well, the Riggo Drill only started once the game was in hand in the second half.
Gibb's teams scored points, big time. They would get the lead... and then beat the snot out of the opponent's defense. Most of the time, the first half was a work of artistic grace, a tapestry woven by Theisman, Rypien, Williams, Art Monk, Gary Clark, Ricky Sanders, Joe Washington, and Kelvin Bryant... and the second half was a brutish beating, keying off the dominance of the Hogs, and finished by Riggins, Rogers, and Byner... It was so powerful, that it didn't matter that the defense knew what play was coming... they were going to go down.
With the talent they are assembling, and Saunders dynamic play calling, this team will be able to go vertical, or play ball control, in either the West Coast or power running style. Saunders is going to be able to adjust the game plan to take full advantage of an opposing defenses weaknesses, to score points big time. And, with a highly mobile QB who has a cannon arm (Campbell), this could potentially be just deadly (will he be able to read defenses, and work through his receiver progression?). This team is headed in the same direction.
The major difference will be that, with Saunders, the play calling will be totally unpredictable, and with Portis, even the ball control game will be able to score from long distance at any time (these receivers will prevent teams from loading the box ever again).
Something is happening here, and I think we are going to like it... a lot. Gibbs message to the NFC is quickly becoming "Fear this Team"

Here's the problem... Saunders has so many more weapons, that no one knows what his offense will look like. They are just going to have to guess...

Saunders' play book in 06 with KC had a lot of screens.

Last year I think the play calling hurt Brunell. We ran too many times on 1st down putting us in 2nd and longs a lot. Teams knew what we were going to do. I don't believe we surprised anyone and our running backs are not big enough to come right at ya, like the old Skins with Riggo.
Keeping the defense guessing is so important for an offense...if you surprise them they can't cheat toward the line on 1st down. When you hit a couple passes on 1st down, they back up even more, making a running play on 1st down more effective.
I can't wait!
