Abraham Visits Redskins Park

Linebacker/defensive end John Abraham visited Redskins Park on Monday, according to head coach Joe Gibbs.
Abraham, who was with the New York Jets the last six years, is an unrestricted free agent this offseason, but the Jets have anointed him as their franchise player. That means teams can negotiate with Abraham, but the Jets can match the offer and retain him, or receive a pair of first-round draft choices in return.

In six seasons, Abraham has recorded 53.5 sacks and 212 tackles. Last year, Abraham recorded 10.5 sacks and 58 tackles.

The Redskins have also spent time with another linebacker/defensive end in Andre Carter, who visited Redskins Park over the weekend.

Team officials have identified pass rush as a need on defense this offseason.

abraham is a machine... how much would he cost?

I would love to get Abraham, but Andre Carter might fit better with the team...

The fact that Carter left w/o a contract is slightly troubling...

Where are we getting all this money from? I don't understand how we're going to be able to stay under the cap with all these signings in the future.

People have been saying the same thing since 2000. It's time to face the facts gentlemen. Eric Schaefer and Dan Snyder have this thing figured out.

They backload contracts so that the value is inflated knowing full well that a voidable year will be voided. They split bonuses so that a bonus due three years from now is structured so that it only counts on that year's cap, and then when that year comes up, the restructure the contract and convert the one year bonus to a "signing" bonus which can be spread out over the rest of the contract.

You don't get to be a billionaire by being a moron with your money. Snyder and his people studied the cap rules and have figured out the best way to use it to their advantage. People around the league should study it and learn from it instead of complaining about it all the time.

It's tough when you hear all these big numbers. It took me a long time to figure it out, but with the help of bosshog and 1niksder, i've come to realize that the cap hell we've been in since 2000 according to the experts is more like a cap club med.

Sure, it's a little warm, but quite pleasant.

Yes, Thats exactly how they do it. Also the cap next year increases another 5 or so mill.

The only thing is that the Redskins may not be able to do is keep some of their own players for certain years such as Kalu, Kenard Lang, and Antonio Pierce. They also may lack flexibility in following years. For instance, the Redskins were unable to sign a decent QB under Shottenheimer and Spurrier.

Right now, it appears the Redskins are getting effective and younger players as opposed to Neon Deion, Mark Carrier, and Bruce Smith. Perhaps they were willing to spend a large amount for another receiver, like Reggie Wayne, but rather just spent that amount on those two receivers.

Abraham would be a nice pick up except for the fact that we would have to give up a 1st round pick. Filling the defensive end position would be nice but maybe a 2nd round draft pick will get the job done. If the Redskins pick up Carter, then that could possibly fill the need as well.

Thinking about that, though, if you win a Super Bowl, then it's not so bad to be in cap hell for a year or too. Look at Philly - everyone praises them for being tight with their money and not chasing flashy free agents (until 2004, when they paid up for TO and Kearse), but what did it get them? Still no rings.

Make that two 1st rounders, according to the article quoted in the first post. That's too high a price for one aging player. Of course, we wouldn't have to give up two 1st rounders if we could make a trade, so maybe the Jets will come calling about Ramsey or something . . .

Oh, I have a feeling that Abraham is still coming to DC, even with the signing of Carter. I'm betting the cost will be Ramsey and a second rounder...

This will be one beast of a defense, factored exponentially by by an offensive machine.

I don't want Abraham even if the jets give him to us for Ramsey straight up! Remember when he refused to play a playoff game because he was afraid that he might get hurt and he was going to be a free agent. The guy is a good athelete, but a bad football person. And he certainly is not worth a first round pick. I meen if the Patriots could get Corey Dillion for a second round pick! He was a much better player at the time.
I just think if they sign him they will regret it something fierce!

I think that we can get someone in the draft. There are a lot of decent to good de's in the draft this year.

Abe would be nice to have... but just not sure we should spend crazy money to get him...
