Guys, kicking is going to be an area of concern for the skins this year. Unlass I'm mistaken Adam Vinatieri is a UFA. I'd love to see the Redskins make a play for him. The kicking game would then be solid for the next 4-5 years. I know there are other pressing needs but the kicking game is one of them and Snyder wouldn't have to break the bank to sign him. Any thoughts?

I'd prefer to sign Nick Novak for less money... Is he on anybody's roster right now?

Why? Vinatieri is PROVEN. Yeah he'll be more expensive but hardly anyone notices the kicking game until it goes horribly bad. Anyone else remember 1999???

I can't beleive more people aren't concerned about our kicking situation. John Hall may come back healthy but anyone with a bit of logic has to say chances are he has a subpar year. I really think the Redskins need to address this.

Going after a celeb kicker is usually a waste of money.

Yeah, Hall is too expensive, that's why we want to dump him, and he's injury prone, so get another guy, but on the cheap.

Either a vet, a draftee or someone like Novak.

as long as if our kickers name isnt hall.

With all due respect, what are some of you missing here. John hall was picked from the jets to help shore up the kicking game. The last 2 years he has been injured and hasn't shown much long-range accuracy. Bringing in a "celeb" kicker CAN'T HURT. Vinatieri for example, is one of the most accurate kickers in history AND isn't injury prone. I would rather spend 2 million a year on this guy then $500,000 on a wing and a prayer kicker. Tell me you at least see some logic in this. Again, do you remember 1999? Draftees?, FA's? Veteran's? If they were any good they wouldnt have been available. Somehow the Pats chose not to franchise him so hopefully he'll look into FA.
I don't don't doubt Novack could be good. But "could" is the key word.

patjam77 - there is indeed logic in what you say. Economising at kicker (and punter) is a false economy. I see the attraction of going for a proven commodity like Vinatieri. Picking kickers is often an imprecise science, and having an NFL track record should improve the odds.

But I have my doubts that the Redskins will go after a big name kicker in free agency. Sorting out the offence is probably more on the coaches minds, at this time. Picking up a kicker like Vinatieri may well yield an extra win or two down the line, but not spending that $2m on a wide receiver could leave the offence in the same rut it ended the year.

For me, $2m on a 90% accuracy kicker with ice in his veins would be good business, but I just don't think it's on the Redskins' minds this offseason.

Excellent points. But a kicker should be in their minds. Halld is expensive and injury prone so the situation should be addressed. Hopefully it is all a mute point and whoever kicks for them does great. But what if it turns into a disaster? Then everyone will have said "why didn't they address this"? Gibbs is a good coach. I can't for one second not think that it's in his top 3-4 of needs this year. If signing a stud kicker wins us 1-2 games then do it because what if they went 8-8 and miss the playoffs by those numbers? Think back to Chip Lohmiller for like 4 years he was automatic. Last year I half covered my eyes in certain kicking situations.

patjam, I too would love getting Vinateri, but even as a kicker, he's too much $$.

If this CBA thing doesn't go through, we are in a butt load of trouble, and we can't spend money on a lavish Kicker.

I too want Novak back.

What am I missing. We have High School kickers in Virginia Beach who are deadly from the 40. What's happening to these guys when they grow up. Kempsville H.S. last year, I swear, had a kid, who was better than half the kickers in the NFL. Here's betting he never makes it.

Nick Novak might not be a long term answer, but as for a salery cap problems, he or someone like him will probably be the short term answer. History has shown that spending extra money for celebrity kickers has been a waste. Perhaps if we got someone in the 7th round but Novak wasn't that bad and I wouldn't mind seeing him around again.

1999 was bad enough, but also remember 2000. We could have easily been at least 10-6 with that overpaid load of beef IF we had a reliable kicker.
