Duke

So I have to admit that I've often tuned out complaints about the favorable calls Duke gets from the refs, I chalked it up to sour grapes. Not any longer.
I was watching the FSU @ Duke game and I was astounded by the total and flagrant lack of objectice officiating. One sequence in particular stood out for me, with FSU up, by 4 I believe, in the fourth quarter, a Duke TO leads to a fastbreak. FSU's guard is body checked at the free throw line ... no whistle ... turnover FSU, ball goes back to Duke. Now, that may have been a charge (unlikely) but whatever it was, NOT blowing the whistle there is treasonable as far as refs are concerned.
Then, on the other end, Reddick takes a poor angle to the basket, is met by a defender, TURNS AROUND and gets a shooting foul with his BACK TO THE BASKET. I was screaming murder at this point and I had no vested interest in the outcome of the game.
Plus the free throw discrepancy defies basketball logic: typically, a discrepancy can be explained by one team's reliance on jump shots versus post play. However, the MAJORITY of FSU's points were in the paint and they got killed on the glass.
Duke had 43 free throw attempts. FSU had 11. So Duke managed to get outrebounded badly (46-35) and killed in the paint and only commited FIVE fouls?
All of this is to say screw Duke, I won't root for them again.

Apparently I'm not the only one who found the officiating objectionable:
Feb. 6, 2006
ACC Coordinator of Men's Basketball Officials John Clougherty today announced the suspension of the officiating crew that worked Saturday's Florida State at Duke men's basketball game. The technical foul that was called on Florida State's Alexander Johnson in the second half of play should not have been assessed. The technical foul was Johnson's fifth foul and resulted in his disqualification from the contest.
Because of the incorrect assessment and handling of the dead ball technical foul situation, the officials that worked the contest will each be suspended for their next game.

I nominate John Clougherty to be NFL Head of Officiating. Good for him for taking some action.

that is one of the reasons there players aren't any good in the pro's. They don't have the refs bailing them out.

My obsession continues: now, I recognize that NC has likely received favorable treatment similar to what Duke gets and the free throw discrepancy was probably mitigated by the fact that they were at NC. That being said, how does a team get out-hustled on the glass by a 2-1 margin, give up twenty-one offensive rebounds and yet none of its three forwards fouls out? I'm pretty sure I fouled out of that game.
I'm very curious as to when Williams picked up foul number four and whether that correlated with the refs gouging their eyes out while singing paeans to Mike I-don't-care-what-comes-after-the-K-those-letters-should-not-make-that-sound-evski.
I can just see Terry picking up his fifth foul: "Um, ref, Sheldon actually stabbed me on that play ... with a hunting knife ... repeatedly ... actually he's still doing it."
"Yes, but you dress like you want it with your short shorts ... also, from now on anyone defending Sheldon starts with nine fouls and must bring him snack packs and juice boxes ... and NOT the kind with the flimsy straws that are hard to open."

Im glad someone else also recognizes this about Duke never getting the calls against them. All of their close games their opponent has fouled out but Duke NEVER gets into foul trouble, and it's complete BS. I this last game, FSU, BC they should of lost all of these games. But thats fine, the Media and the NCAA LOVES Duke and they will win the ACC conferance and thats all.

Somebody sent a spook article to Tony Kornheiser on his radio show that was basically a press release:
ACC announces partnership with Duke
ACC commissioner John Swofford is pleased to announce that an agreement was reached with Coack K. Sometime within the 7 minute mark of tonight (last night's) game, a touch foul will be called on a yet-to-be named player.
The ACC would like to commend Coach K for making such an agreement. Tar Heels coach Roy Williams commented on the matter: "It's incredible that Coack K has agreed to this, and to have it happen on our own floor, makes it really special."

despite the loss to duke or better yet the loss to no other than jj redick i,m proud of my young heels but a little disappointed at the sametime.
falling behind by 17 then roy pulled his starters and the bench brought them back. what a game typical duke/carolina nailbiter.
as long as they make the ncaa tournament.....

Since your obsession continues, watch ACC teams play out of confrence games. All those teams get favorable calls. Like when Saint Joes played Wake in the sweet 16 they were calling the biggest bs on Saint Joes. SJU still won though.
