Taylor Jacobs (#2 with the cap situation?)

With the cap situation the way it is, and the need to save money... what are the odds of Taylor Jacobs claiming the #2 WR position?
He missed a lot of camp and some playing time if I remember correctly due to injury, that's why he was used so sparingly I think...
Jacobs is pretty big, but I guess lacks strength to use it to the best of his ability.
Taylor Jacobs
2005 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.
Grade: 65 | Key
Alert: None
Comment:
He has good body control, change of direction, and adjustment to the ball while in the air. He creates good separation with a burst out of his cuts. He is an effective runner after the catch and is able to turn a short gain into a big play. He will catch in traffic and shows he can go over the middle. However, Jacobs lacks strength for his size and get handled by big cornerbacks. While he gives great effort as a blocker, he needs to get tougher at the point of attack and not be handled by the defender. He needs to work on his releases and do a better job of escaping the hold up. He has the speed to get behind defenses and is a threat with the ball in his hands.[/b]
He's got size, goes over the middle and can make things happen after the catch? Oh yeah, and he used to be a sprinter...
I say we give Jacobs every opportunity to earn the #2 slot and spend our money elsewhere, like adding another TE (a Don Warren type blocker), or a pass rushing DE, or someone else...

Jacobs reminds me too much of Westbrook, looks great in training camp and dissapears during games. I don't know how much of that is attributable to Brunell and the offense but Jacobs, thus far, has earned one of the easiest paychecks on the team

Still, it seems like his problems are correctable.

IMO Jacobs has seriously underachieved compared to expectations, including THIS season, which this scouting report doesn't take into account.

Jacobs = NO.
He is a softee..he's injury prone and he doesn't get separation for whatever reason. I wouldn't start him. I would look for a playmaker to play opposite Moss, who is tough, runs good routes and a hard worker.
A guy like Eric Moulds or perhaps a top young talent to Mold.

How so? He has decent height (6'0"), but he isn't very fast. He doesn't create any seperation at all, and lacks the ability to take balls away from defenders in mid-air. Finally, he does a terrible job in the open field. That screen we ran to him in the Seattle game was beyond ugly.
Forget his problems, what are his strengths? He's shown absolutely nothing in his three years, except his incredible ability to get injured, and he actually seems to have regressed from 2004, despite the fact we were desperate for anyone resembling a reciever to step up. If everyone was healthy on our team he would be the fourth string reciever on a weak squad (behind Moss, Patten and yes, Thrash). Other than the fact that he's young, cheap and hasn't had any off field incidents, what's to like?
He's just the latest in the long line of Florida recievers who couldn't cut it in the NFL. He finally had a real shot this year, and gave us nothing. Let's move on. (And no, I'm not bitter we passed up Mike Doss for this bum.)

Are you kidding me? Taylor Jacobs is very fast!
He's a former sprinter, and maintains his well-above average speed.
He's got good hands, and good vision...
IMO all he needs is to imrpove his strength, then all the other dominoes will fall.

I don't care if he was a former cheetah, he creates no seperation at all from defensive backs. He offers nothing to the Redskins, and adding twenty pounds to his bench press isn't going to change that.

i think we all need to bear in mind a simple fact:
MARK BRUNELL MADE TAYLOR JACOBS LOOK TEN TIMES WORSE THAN HE MIGHT REALLY BE.
think about it- how many times this year did you see jacobs WIDE FRICKING OPEN deep (sometimes by a MILE), only to have brunell sail the ball out of bounds and/or short? i seem to recall at least 5 of these sure touchdowns that brunell totally honked. the fact is, he only threw TWO good deep passes all season (in the first dallas game). all of his others were terrible, moss only caught some of them by making terrific adjustments and faking out the DB so it wouldn't be intercepted. this alone is reason enough that we MUST go with a different QB next year, but i digress.
even if these 5 touchdowns had been the ONLY balls jacobs caught all year, we'd be looking at him much differently, wouldn't we?
it has also been said that brunell rarely looked to jacobs in his progressions, even when it seemed he was open. i don't know if this is true since they don't show the receivers on TV until the pass is thrown. but i'm sure people at the games have said so, am i wrong?
also to be considered is that jacobs has been playing with a toe injury all year and has not been at 100%. that of course is the biggest issue with him in my mind- will he ever be healthy? is he a wussy? he left the playoff game against seattle for what reason?
anyways, i'm certainly not a TJ lover. i just think we (as the fans) won't really get a good read on him until we have an actual NFL QB back there.

Maybe you're right (although I doubt it), but guess what? Brunell is probably going to be starting in 2006, and he's not getting any better. Regardless of who is at fault, we need better production from the #2 reciever spot, and if we can't upgrade the quarterback, what does that leave us?

Obviously we all would want Taylor to be more of a key player in the passing game, and i am surely not saying he should be our number two, but he is an above average if not very good special teams player. He did play thrashs' spot on teams i believe. Whether that warrants him a place on the team is yet to be seen, i wouldn't mind giving him another year to either become the #3 or last option at WR. You figure we will go after a solid number two wideout and everybody else gets bumped one spot down, that pretty much means the end of either antonio brown or taylor jacobs.

I'm a little tired of waiting for Jacobs to deliver. I fear he's just another wide receiver bust from Florida.

You might want to try a bigger font next time. I had real trouble making out the words.
Somehow, Santana Moss managed to look OK with Brunell throwing him the ball.

Taylor Jacobs showed no desire to actually come back and get the ball when it was thrown to him. He never seemed to play hard.
He's shown NOTHING in games to make you think he'll be anything in the NFL. Hoping that he will suddenly turn into Art Monk is a sucker's bet.

Whatever, Jacobs is a bum..what was the excuse when Ramsey was throwing to him? Oh...yeah he fell on the football and injured his stomach and was out for the year.
Oh, he's coming back....let's see...oh yea, turf toe....Patten and Thrash out in the biggest game in 15 years...he runs off the field saying "I think I have a concussion..." then after the game said to Larry Michael that his family has a history of migraines??
See a pattern here.? Everyone else does.
Problem with your Jacobs campaign is that all of those things you say he is capable of doing are all just like you put it......on paper....on the field he's done nothing.
By the way Die Cowboys Die, did Brunell also kill Kennedy? I mean you blame him for everything else.

He'd be good with the Rams for 3&4 WR sets but only because someone has to cover Holt, Bruce & Curtis. But with the Skins he only adds depth on the bench because we're rarely ever going to come out in 4 wide set.

I seem to remember Joe Gibbs saying in pre season that this was going to be a major year for Taylor Jacobs - well hes done nothing and I think time is up for him in Washington.

Some fans have an agenda against certain players (and even Gibbs at times has been severely criticised for not being good enough). It helps to make your point if you make it in big letters, don't you think!

I agree... I'll take it one step further though...
I don't fear that he might be... he IS another WR bust from Florida.
The guy has no heart whatsoever. Get him the heck off the team as fast as possible.

Yeah, we could always look at Jacob's scouting report, but then we might as well sign Ryan Leaf too. I mean, that guy is going to be a star!

Jacobs had ample opportunity this year to show that he could deliver when it counted. At this point, I'm pretty much counting him out.
Don't forget that Patten will be back and that we'll look to bulk up on WR either in free agency or the draft. There are far better solutions to our problem at WR than Jacobs, and we don't have to kill our cap space to address it.

Us Skins fans are way too impatient -- it takes some WRs a few years. I've said this in previous posts so I'm sure many of you are sick of it...
I believe Jacobs will be a good player. Brunell rarely looked for him, or Patten or Thrash -- and they were open this year. Jacobs doesn't make that much money and his cap hit is very reasonablbe -- I'd give him more time. Getting Moulds would be sweet but I wonder if he'll want too much money and I also wonder if Brunell would ever look his way either. Brunell seems rushed in the pocket to me and I don't see him making his way through 3 reads before sending one of his classic out of bound throws...
For you young-ins -- When Chris Simms came into the league, he was hurt a lot and didn't play much for the Giants for 3-4 years (I can't remember how many years it was now) -- the Giants didn't give up on him and he turned out to be a very good player -- unfortunately, he beat us a number of times in his day and I hated that guy.
It takes some guys a little longer to mature and figure it out. I have this gut feeling that Jacobs will do that. Call me overly optimistic but I don't see him ending up as a bust.
