Players that won't return...

We had a super year -- I can't wait for free agency, the draft and preseason to begin. To that end, I've gotten over our loss and figured it's time to begin the fun of figuring out what our 2006 team will look like.
I'll start by identifying some players I don't see being on the team next year. In some cases, I'd rather keep them but for various reasons, they'll be gone:
Ray Brown
LeVar Arrington
Patrick Ramsey
Cory Raymer
Matt Bowen
John Hall
Walt Harris
Brandon Noble
David Patten
Of course, there will be others gone too, but they're deep on the depth chart anyway.
What do others think?

Why is Patten gone next year?

I thought Patten would get questioned -- I just think he may have lost a step and that's okay when you're 6'3" 220lbs -- but a small WR that's lost a step seems to be someone we don't need. PLUS, he's due to make $2.5 mil.

How do you explain us getting rid of Arrington?

13 mil cap hit for a guy who doesn't play on 3rd downs...

we take the hit either way.
why not have him here if we are paying for it?

Gotta cut him so all 13 mil aren't on the 2006 cap. If it is, there's no 2nd WR, no good backup lineman, etc.
Need to let him loose before that $6M comes due in the Spring. They can spread the hit over two seasons. Don't ask me how -- those rules are more confusing that QB rating calculations.

Yeah, we take a cap hit, but it's one-time cap hit and we're done...ala Coles and his 9 mil.
Don't get me wrong -- I like him and would like to keep him but with him due a 6 mil roster bonus in July I doubt he'll be back -- Would he re-do his contract to be more cap friendly and stay in DC?

Actually, LeVar may be a cap hit for 2 seasons. We'll probably cut him after June 1 (but before his July 6 mil roster bonus kicks in). That way, we'd have a portion of his original signing bonus in 06 and the remainder of his bonus in 07.
Frost? Maybe...he did pretty well today I thought, under some bad field positon.

I get what you guys are saying BUT:
the people on this board that know the Cap situation say we can't get rid of him.
So I'll take their word for it.

guys, we're talking about Lavar Arrington here, not some overpaid veteran ala Deon/Bruce. This is an athletic linebacker who loves to be a redskins. Now that he has a taste of the playoffs, i can't see how we wouldn't want to restructure his contract at least a little bit. I mean, look at what happened to Fred Smoot and Antonio Pierce when they went to different teams (traitors). Moreover, he just had a kid, and i don't think that his wife would approve of the stress that has to be delt with with moving.

Let me explain why I think that the Redskins should get rid of Lavar Arrington
1. Lavar to the Redskins to court on 6.5 million..
2. Lavar who is getting paid what 60 million, I may be wrong but it is close, if I am wrong please correct me, but my point is, Lavar called Daniel Snyder a thief, and the devil... And this guy does nothing but open his mouth, they need to get rid of this guy, I used to like Lavar but now its time to send this man packing..

Heck no Lavar is one of the studs on D. And hes been here since his rookie year. I want to take the cap hit we can get young talent in the draft we will be fine.

On 980 they said if Lavar is cut before June 1st (I think) he counts something like 12 million against the 06 cap. If he's cut after june 1st he counts 2 million against the cap and the rest in 07. If they want to make a run next year at the title I think they cut Lavar and use the money to get another receiver or impact player and deal with the consequences later.
Imo, I don't think they pay Lavar twice what they pay Marcus Washington.

I don't think that Joe Gibbs will try and pull this off, even in the era of free agency. He's currently dealing with the consequences of years and years of "sign him now; pay later," and so I think that Gibbs is looking to build a team in the long run and not just a squad that might make a run next year.

You missed one, Taylor Jacobs. He has been around for what, 3 years? There were times today that he couldn't get open even when he wasn't covered by anyone.

Patten stays and PRAY that LaVar stays

I would like to give my to cents on the LaVar situation. LaVar is one of the best players I have ever seen, but in greg williams system Lavar cant be Lavar which is rome around the field and make plays. So why pay all this money to LaVar when Lavar cant be LaVar.In this system he is just a good player, instead of the superstar he can be. Dont cut him trade him.

Ray Brown - Ok he retired
LeVar Arrington - Why ? I think we can rework the contract
Patrick Ramsey Trade him
Cory Raymer Yup I agree
Matt Bowen Agreed
John Hall Not sure yet
Walt Harris If we don't get better DB depth then he stays as a nickel
Brandon Noble Agree
David Patten Nope - we need him to stretch the field and take doubles off of Moss

no, patten is worthless as a #2 option, we need another REAL WR. patten should probably be kept around as viable depth at the position though- look what happened today, we had to pull people out of the crowed and suit them up at WR. though if we save 2 million or so by cutting and we need that space to get another real WR, there's no question we should cut him.
